Non-Stewart Families in Balquhidder and Surrounding Areas
The following families resided in Balquhidder or neighbouring parishes and married into various branches of the Stewarts of Balquhidder, or are otherwise of research interest to the Stewarts of Balquhidder Research Group.
The McIntyre Family in Carnlia
The following McIntyre family resided in Carnlia and intermarried so often with Stewarts of this branch that has become helpful to present this McIntyre family in full below. Given that McIntyre is an occupational surname (from mac an-t soar, “son of the wright/sawyer/carpenter”) I have long suspected, and even suggested, that the McIntyres in Carnlia are probably a sept of another local clan and that they took on the occupational patronymic to differentiate themselves from their kin. I’ve recently been sent a reference to support this theory. From The MacLaren, A History of Clan Labhran by Margaret MacLaren, which is probably the definitive tome on Clan Labhran, in which the author says:
“There were several families of McIntyres (anglicized Wright) who settled in Balquhidder. The rental for 1509 for the crown lands of Balquhidder show the following McIntyres were tenants at the western end of the Glen: Gillemore in Monachyl, Donald in Invercarnaig, and Duncan in Monachyl Tuarach. The following year Donald, John, Gilbert, and Duncan McIntyre were tenants in Invenenty. There is of course a Clan McIntyre and a member of that Clan may have settled in Balquhidder, but it seems more probable that these MacIntyres were MacLarens, distinguished by a professional by-name. They fought with the MacLaren contingent under Steward of Appin in the ’45. MacIntyres or Wrights whose origin can be traced to Balquhidder may be regarded as a sept of Clan Labhran.” — From The MacLaren, A History of Clan Labhran by Margaret MacLaren.
Mark McIntire of the Clan MacIntyre Society (USA) has suggested that a case can be made for the Balquhidder MacIntyres being a cadet of Clan MacIntyre of Glencoe. However, as the origins of these MacIntyres are not germaine to our Stewart research, we will have to leave it to the MacIntyre and MacLaren researchers to sort that out. Meanwhile, we will focus briefly on this one McIntyre family in Carnlia:
Patrick MCINTYRE, b. ABT 1740 in Probably Carnlia, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Patrick married on 25 JUL 1772 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Catharine KING b: ABT 1750 in Scotland. They had the following children:
- Duncan MCINTYRE , in Carnlia b: ABT 24 MAY 1773 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Residence: 1841 Carnlia, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Residence: 1851 Gartnafuaran, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Residence: 1855 Glentarken, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. Duncan married on 13 JAN 1798 in Balquhidder and 14 JAN 1798 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret STEWART, b: ABT 10 SEP 1775 in Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. Margaret was a daughter to Donald Stewart and Catharine McLaren of #3 Line – The Stewarts in Ardveich, Carnlea, and Kichp above. Their marriage record shows Duncan of Balquhidder and Margaret of Comrie parishes. In 1841 they were living in Carnlia and in 1851 they were living in Gartnafuaran. She died 1855 in Glentarken, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland and is buried in Leachin of Achra near Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following children:
- Peter MCINTYRE b: ABT 28 OCT 1798 in Carnlia, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Peter married on 28 JUN 1828 in Campbelltown, Kintyre, Argyll, Scotland to Mary STEWART, daughter of James Stewart and Jean McDiarmid of #5 Line – The Stewarts in Ardveich and Stronvar above. They began their family in Argyll and then in 1831 they immigrated to Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. Peter’s gravestone is shown at right (c/o Doug Cram). Peter McIntyre and Mary Stewart had the following children. Further descendant information is available from our fellow researcher, Helen Nicholson.
- John Lorne Stewart MCINTYRE b: 12 FEB 1829 in Campbelltown, Argyll, Scotland. John appears to have been named after John Lorne Stewart of Glenbuckie, who owned Stronvar and also resided in Campbelltown in Argyll. Presumably John Lorne Stewart was either a close friend or employer of the family. It should be noted that when one discounts the birth of John Lorne Stewart MCINTYRE then the remainder of the children all follow customary onomastic patterns. John immigrated to Renfrew County, Ontario Canada in 1831 with his parents. John married on 28 APR 1858 in Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada to Mary MCINNES b: ABT 1835 in Scotland or Canada. They had the following children:
- Peter MCINTYRE b: 1858 in Horton Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Angus MCINTYRE b: 1861 in Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Elizabeth MCINTYRE b: 1863 in Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Mary Jane MCINTYRE b: 1865 in Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Findley James MCINTYRE b: 1867 in Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Marion MCINTYRE b: 1870 in Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- John Lorne MCINTYRE b: 1874 in Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- James Henry MCINTYRE b: 1876 in Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Christina Margaret MCINTYRE b: 11 OCT 1878 in Admanston, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. Christina was the author of the McIntyre family history, upon which this presentation is based.
- Margaret MCINTYRE b: ABT JAN 1831 in Campbelltown, Argyll, Scotland. She immigrated as an infant with her parents to Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. She never married.
- Duncan MCINTYRE b: 21 FEB 1833 in Horton Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Jane MCINTYRE b: 17 FEB 1835 in Horton Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. She married Hugh CAMERON.
- James MCINTYRE b: 25 JUN 1836 in Horton Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Helen MCINTYRE b: 8 APR 1839 in Horton Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Findlay MCINTYRE b: 20 JUL 1841 in Horton Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. He married Alice BROMLEY.
- Christina MCINTYRE b: 12 JUL 1844 in Horton Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. She married Fred BROMLEY.
- Catharine MCINTYRE b: ABT 2 FEB 1800 in Carnlia, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Catharine married on 22 DEC 1831 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland to Duncan CARMICHAEL b: ABT 1800 in Scotland.
- Christian MCINTYRE b: ABT 31 JAN 1802 in Carnlia, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Residence: 1851 McNab Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. Christian married on 10 JUL 1829 in Balquhidder and 22 JUL 1829 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to John STEWART. He was born ABT 1802 in Scotland. His birth family has not yet been confirmed, but the marriage record says he was from Kilmadock. Given the large number of marriages that occurred between the Carnlia McIntyres and the Ardveich Stewarts, and given that there is a John Stewart of the Ardveich family who is a perfect match, both chronologically and onomastically, for Christian’s husband, his birth is presently preferred. But this relationship is NOT proven! It is suggested that he was John STEWART b: ABT 27 JUL 1802 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, son of John STEWART in Ardveich and Kiep, and Anne Stewart of #3 Line – The Stewarts in Ardveich, Carnlea, and Kichp.John and Christian began their family in Scotland, then in 1831 they immigrated with the remainder of the McIntyre family to Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. John died in 1836 (birth date is according to grave stone).Christian McIntyre and John Stewart had the following children whose descendants are shown above under #3 Line – The Stewarts in Ardveich, Carnlea, and Kichp
- Ann STEWART b: 1829 in Scotland. No birth record has been found for Ann.
- Margaret STEWART b: 1832 in Grenville, Qubec, Canada.
- John STEWART b: 1835 in McNab Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada.
- Possible births for John STEWART who married Christian MCINTYRE.
16 NOV 1800 in Kincardine, son of John Stewart and Rabina Oswald
7 AUG 1801 in Lidanscridan, Balquhidder, son of John Stewart and Katharine Stewart
27 JUL 1802 in Wester Ardveich, Comrie, son of John Stewart and Ann Stewart (as preferred above).
30 OCT 1803 in Achra, Balquhidder, son of John Stewart and Margaret McDonald. - Donald MCINTYRE , at Gartnafuaran b: ABT 25 MAR 1804 in Carnlia, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Donald married 14 DEC 1833 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Catharine MCINTYRE. Catharine was bap. 12 MAR 1809 in Carnlia, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland as the daughter of Duncan McIntyre and Margaret Stewart. Donald’s mother, Margaret Stewart was born ABT 10 SEP 1775 in Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland as a daughter of Donald Stewart in Ardveich and Kichp and his wife Catharine McLaren of #3 Line – The Stewarts in Ardveich, Carnlea, and Kichp.PLEASE NOTE: Donald and his wife Catharine both had parents with exactly the same names, both from Carnlia, and they were married only one day apart. Census records confirm this is NOT an error. In 1851 Donald and Catharine were residing at Gartnafuaran with Catharine’s widowed father in their household, and they were living right next door to Donald’s elderly parents.
- Duncan MCINTYRE b: ABT 7 SEP 1834 in Carnlia, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland

- Finlay MCINTYRE b: 15 MAY 1844 in Gartnafuaran, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
- Donald MCINTYRE b: 4 MAR 1850 in Gartnafuaran, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
- Catharine MCINTYRE b: 29 AUG 1852 in Gartnafuaran, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
- Donald McIntyre and Catharine McIntyre had the following children:
- Janet MCINTYRE b: ABT 26 MAY 1806 in Carnlia, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Janet married on 11 FEB 1832 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Robert FERGUSON b: ABT. 8 AUG 1802 in Wester Achtow, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, son of Patrick Ferguson and Margaret Stewart. (Margaret Stewart’s birth family has not been identified though it is likely she came from the west end of Loch Earn.) They had the following children:
- Peter FERGUSON b: ABT 16 JAN 1833 in Stronslaney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Peter is presumed to have died young prior to the birth of his same-named brother in 1841.
- Margaret FERGUSON b: ABT 26 OCT 1834 in Glenogle Fall, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
- Duncan FERGUSON b: ABT 23 JUN 1839 in Lochearnhead, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Duncan married to Grace FERGUSON b: ABT 1840.
- Peter FERGUSON b: 16 MAY 1841 in Lochearnhead, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Peter married on 17 DEC 1872 in Alloa, Clackmannan, Scotland to Margaret Christie STEWART b: 29 JUN 1845 in Cairn Park, Dollar, Clackmannan, Scotland, daughter of John Stewart and Mary Christie. (John Stewart was born 1817 in Stirling, but his origins are not known.) In 1861 Peter Ferguson is working as a servant at Braeleny in Callander in the household of Archibald Campbell. A John Stewart, age 48 (b 1813 in Killin) is working as a shepherd in the same household. (It is not known if this John Stewart is related to Peter’s father-in-law.) In 1891 Peter and Margaret are found in Dalhousie District, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada surrounded by several other Ferguson families. It seems likely that they Peter and Margaret immigrated late and joined other members of their family. At least one of the other Fergusons has now been identified as the family of Peter’s uncle, John Ferguson who married Catharine Stewart from Lianach of Glenbuckie. Peter Ferguson and Margaret Stewart had the following children:
- Janet FERGUSON b: 1873 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
- Donald S. FERGUSON b: 1876 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
- Robert FERGUSON b: 1878 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland

- Margaret MCINTYRE b: ABT 8 SEP 1822 in Carnlia, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
- Finlay MCINTYRE b: ABT 2 APR 1775 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Finlay is believed to have married twice although there is no record of his second marriage. - John MCINTYRE b: ABT 21 AUG 1803 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
- Katharine MCINTYRE b: ABT 16 MAR 1806 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
Finlay is believed to have married secondly to Margaret STEWART, although no record of their marriage has been found. She is believed to be the Margaret Stewart b: ABT 16 FEB 1783 in Lochearnhead, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland as a daughter of Robert Stewart in Lochearnhead and his wife Agnes McNab of #3 Line – The Stewarts in Ardveich, Carnlea, and Kichp. They had the following child:
- Finlay MCINTYRE b: ABT 29 MAR 1807 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Finlay is believed to have moved prior to 1832 briefly to Islay, Argyll from where he is believed to have immigrated about 1832 along with his half-brother Peter to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Finlay married ABT 1834 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada to Sarah EADS of Portuguese Cove, near Halifax. They had descendants. Finlay died in 1868 in Nova Scotia, Canada. This family is being researched by Jerry Byers.
- Katharine MCINTYRE b: ABT 17 MAY 1779 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. She is likely the Catharine McIntyre who married on 13 JAN 1798 in Balquhidder and Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland to Patric/Peter MCNIE. They are believed to be the parents of:
- Jane(t) MCNIE, b 1799, believed to be the Jane MCNIE who married on 26 FEB 1826 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland to Robert STEWART, son of Duncan STEWART in Summerline from Line IV The Stewarts in Walbeich, above. They later immigrated to McNab Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada.

- Donald MCINTYRE b: 13 JUL 1784 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
- Mary MCINTYRE b: 14 JAN 1787 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland

McLarens from Glenbeich in Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
The following family is found in a tree submitted to Ancestry. The submitted records show the family coming from “Gleneich” and “Denny” in or near Balquhidder parish. It is believed these are likely transcription errors for Glenbeich or Glenveich and Derry — both of which were McLaren properties. c/o familyDOTtreesATyahooDOTca
