The Stewarts in Edraleachdach and Lorachan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland

V-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie

This page describes the fifth cadet branch (V-Branch) of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie, descended from Duncan “Oig” Stewart, son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie. Their ancestral seat was Edraleachdach (“Edra”) on the north shore of Loch Katrine in historic Perthshire, Scotland (now part of the Trossachs National Park), with a smaller secondary residence at Lorachan. The Stewarts held Edra until 1870, when, after the death of James Stewart, the family failed to meet conditions to retain the farmstead, and it was sold. Lorachan is now a ruin and is not marked on modern maps. The page also traces the five known descendant lines.

Edraleachdach (Edra)

Edraleachdach farm is located on the north shore of Loch Katrine in Callander Parish in historic Perthshire, Scotland (present-day Stirling Council area). It’s name is a mouthful to pronounce (“et-ra-leh-ech-keckk” with the ‘ch’ sound as in ‘loch,’ and, yes, the ‘d’ is pronounced as a ‘k’) and is often found abbreviated to just “Edra.”

Edraleachdach means “farm between two stone-flagged burns.” These would be the Strone Burn on the west and the Letter Burn on the east.

Edra was one of four major farmsteads (along with Strongavaltrie/Strone, Letter, and Breanachoil) on the northeast shore of Loch Katrine that historically belonged to various senior branches of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie family.

Edra remained in Stewart hands until 1870 when James Stewart of Edraleachdach died and left the farm to his brother, Archibald Stewart, and Archibald’s son, Archibald John Stewart, on the condition that they managed it satisfactorily for a period of five years. They did not fulfill this condition and the estate was sold.

Loch Katrine is now owned by the Strathclyde Water Corporation and is part of the catchment for the water supply for the city of Glasgow. It continued the practice of grazing sheep on the surrounding hill farms, including Edra, until about 2001. The area has recently been incorporated into the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.

Lorachan

Lorachan was a secondary residence of this family. It was a smaller farm located on the Edraleachdach estate. It is now a ruin and is not shown on maps.

Ancestors of the Stewarts in Edraleachdach

The Stewarts in Edraleachdach are V-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie and descend from Duncan “Oig” Stewart, a younger son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie. The Stewarts of Glenbuckie were the second principal family of the Stewarts of Balquhidder

Descendants of the Stewarts in Edraleachdach

According to Stewarts of the South, the Stewarts in Edraleachdach had four lines of descendants. Howevever, we have identified a fifth line not found in Stewarts of the South:

    • 1-Line: The descendants of Sgt. James Stewart, “The Black Sergeant”
    • 2-Line: The descendants of Robert Stewart in Gartmore
    • 3-Line: The descendants of Alexander Stewart in Bochastle
    • 4-Line: The descendants of Duncan Stewart in Coilantogle
    • 5-Line: The descendants of Donald Stewart in Edraleachdach (not in Stewarts of the South)

Information on these descendant lines is presented below.

The Origin of V-Branch – The Stewarts in Edraleachdach

A Son of James mac Alastir mhic Dhunachy

Stewarts of the South (c. 1815) describes the origin of the Stewarts in Edraleachdach as:

“James Mac Alastir foresaid had a son [who was] a tenant of Lorachans [on] Loch Cathrine side [in] Callander parish, [on the] estate of Drummond. His offspring goes under the denomination of Lorachans.”

The phrase “James Mac Alastir foresaid” refers back to a previously mentioned James who was son of Alexander Stewart. However, the author’s prior mentions of James are contradictory in their identification of him which leads to multiple possible interpretations of the text. Our present best attempt to interpret the text, despite the contradictions, is that the Stewarts in Edraleachdach and Lorachan descend from an unidentified son of James Stewart, who was son of Alexander Stewart, who was son of Duncan “Oig” Stewart, who was son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie. But we cannot be certain that our interpretation is correct. (For a complete explanation of the contradictions and possible interpretations, please refer to III-Branch – The Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan.)

Stewarts of the South appears to say that the Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan descend from the same James Stewart who is identified as “James mac Alastir mhic Dhunachy” (James, son of Alexander, son of Duncan “Oig” Stewart). This would make V-Branch (The Stewarts in Edraleachdach) and III-Branch (The Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan) sibling branches.

Testament of Donald Stewart in Edraleachdach, 1680

In 1680, the testament for Donald Stewart in Edralechoch was registered. The deceased is believed to be a younger son of Duncan Oig Stewart, son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie, and thus, an uncle to the later Stewarts in Edraleachdach. Donald Stewart is presumed to have died without heirs as no sons are named in his testament. The following people are named:

  • Christian Stewart, his sole executor (presumed to be his wife)
  • Duncan Stewart in Dallinlaggan (believed to be Duncan Stewart, 8th of Glenbuckie)
  • Alexander Stewart in Stronslany (Alexander Stewart, 8th of Gartnafuaran)
  • Robert Stewart of Ardvorlich (Robert Stewart, 3rd of Ardvorlich, d. 1680)
  • Alexander Stewart in Dullater (belonging to 1-Line of the Invernahyle Stewarts in Upper Duart who also held Dullater)

Descendants of Duncan “Oig” Stewart

From the preceding information, we can create the following tentative tree for the suggested origin of the Stewarts in Edraleachdach. However, this tree cannot be reconciled chronologically with the evidence we have for the cadet lines shown below. So we know this tree is not correct. It is merely the closest we can come to interpreting the evidence we have available to us at this point.

Duncan Oig Stewart, of III-IV-V Branch Forester in Glen Finglas, b. Abt 1585, Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. UNKNOWN. Duncan “Oig” Stewart is believed to have had the following sons:

    1. Alexander mac Dhunachy Stewart, of III & V Branches, Forester in Glen Finglas, b. Abt 1605, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. UNKNOWN. Alexander Stewart is believed to have had the following son:
      1. James mac Alastir mhic Dhunachy Stewart, of III & V Branches, Forester in Glen Finglas, b. Abt 1630, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. UNKNOWN.
        1. _____ Stewart, b. 1660-1665 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He is believed to be progenitor of III-Branch – The Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan.
        2. _____ (possibly named Robert — see below) Stewart in Lorachan, b. abt. 1670, in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN. Said to be a son of James mac Alastir mhic Dhunachy Stewart. He resided at Lorachan and is believed to be progenitor of the Stewarts in Edraleachdach. His descendants are shown below.
      2. Donald mac Alastair mhic Dhonachie Stewart, of IV-Branch, b. Abt 1635, Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. UNKNOWN, Craiglevan, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location. Donald is the patriarch of IV-Branch. His descendants are presented below.
    2. James mac Dhunachy Stewart, b. Abt 1610, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. UNKNOWN. James is believed to have had no male descendants.
    3. Donald mac Dhunachy Stewart in Edraleachdach, b. Abt 1615, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. 1680 in Edraleachdach. He is believed to be the Donald Stewart whose testament was registered in 1680. He is believed to have married Christian Stewart and had no surviving male heirs. Upon his death, it is believed that Edraleachdach passed to his grand-nephew, _____ Stewart in Lorachan, shown above.

Robert Stewart in Edraleachdach and Lorachan

In 1728, James Stewart, son of Robert Stewart in Edrelechoch was mentioned as a creditor in a testament by ___ Finlayson. Confirmed 8 Feb 1728 by Alexander Stewart of Glenbuckie.

If we estimate that James Stewart was born c. 1700 and his father, Robert, was born c. 1670. then this would appear to make Robert Stewart about the right age to be the unidentified son of James mac Alastir who is shown above as the progenitor of the Stewarts in Edraleachdach and Lorachan. Either that or he belongs to a kindred line that terminated.

Missing Records

Arriving at an accurate accounting of this family is further complicated by the fact that there are only a mere handful of baptismal records in the Callander parish register for the residences on the north shore of Loch Katrine (including Edraleachdach) prior to the mid-1740s. The parish register is clearly very incomplete for this time period with lots of births being unrecorded. This is likely due to two factors:

    1. the distance and difficulty to travel from the parish church in Callander to Loch Katrine prior to the creation of the military road in 1746; and
    2. many members of this family were Anglican/Episcopal in their faith, not Presbyterian (Church of Scotland). Unlike other parishes, the Anglican/Episcopal baptisms in Callander appear to have been kept in a separate register from the Church of Scotland baptisms and those records appear to have not survived.

The absence of reliable records prior to 1746 makes accounting for the early generations of this family nearly impossible to do. Thus, all that can be said with confidence about the descendant lines shown below is that they descend by uncertain means from Duncan “Oig” Stewart, son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie.

1 Line – The Descendants of Sgt. James Stewart in Lorachan,

Known as “The Black Sergeant”

The first line of descendants of the Stewarts in Edraleachdach resided firstly at the secondary cottage of Lorachan and latterly at the main house of Edraleachdach. Stewarts of the South, c. 1815, says that these two residences were “the same place.” That is, they were probably two different residences on the same property. As noted above, Lorachan does not appear on any modern or historic maps. This family is described in Stewarts of the South as follows:

James Mac Alastir foresaid had a son [who was] a tenant of Lorachans [on] Loch Cathrine side [in] Callander parish, [on the] estate of Drummond. [James mac Alastir’s] offspring goes under the denomination of Lorachans.

    1. James Stewart, late tacksman of [L]orachans & Edralecheg, [which are the] same place.  [James was] commonly called “the Black Serjant”.  [He] left three sons:
      1. John Stewart, [the] first son [who] died before his father
      2. Walter Stewart, [who is the] present tacksman of Lorachans & Edraleek [on] Loch Cathrine side [in] Callander parish [which is the] estate of Drummond.  [Lorachans and Edraleek] was a lucrative tack from the Barons of Exchequer for a long time. [Walter had]
        1. two sons [who are both] minors.  [He pays] rent £140.
      3. Alexander Stewart, [who is] brother to Walter. [He] is [a] land surveyor in England. Alexander, his brother, (it is believed that the “his brother” redundantly refers to Walter’s brother) left two sons:
        1. (is not mentioned)
        2. [the] 2[nd] of them [is the] head gardener to Sir Robert Preston of Valleyfield, Perth. This a good situation.

Sgt. James “Black Sergeant” Stewart, in Lorachan and Edraleachdach

Sgt. James “Black Sergeant” Stewart, in Lorachan and Edraleachdach, b. Abt 1725, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. Bef 1815  (Age < 89 years)

James Stewart was born about 1725 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, likely at Edraleachdach on the north shore of Loch Katrine, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. His year of birth is estimated based on the date of his marriage. He was likely the son of John Stewart in Edraleachdach and Agnes Stewart, but this is not confirmed and no record of his birth has been found. (John Stewart and Agnes Stewart had one recorded child, Alexander Stewart, born 4 Mar 1722 in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. No record has been found of other children to them. However, James was born around the right time to be their child and his eldest son was named John.) James had a younger brother, Robert Stewart, who later resided at Gartmore.

According to Stewarts of the South, c. 1815, James Stewart was the senior descendant the Stewarts in Edraleachdach. His family is believed to descend from Duncan “Oig” Stewart, son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie, by unknown means.

James Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South (c. 1815) as:

“James Stewart, late tacksman of [L]orachans & Edralecheg, [which is the] same place. [James was] commonly called “the Black Serjant”. [He] left three sons: (1) John Stewart, [the] first son [who] died before his father; (2) Walter Stewart, [who is the] present tacksman of Lorachans & Edraleek [on] Loch Cathrine side [in] Callander parish [which is the] estate of Drummond…; (3) Alexander Stewart, [who is] brother to Walter….”

While James is identified as “The Black Sergeant”, it is not known what army he served in. “Black” was likely a reference to his hair colour.

On 14 Mar 1753, James Stewart married in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret Stewart. James’ age at the time of marriage is unknown.

James and Margaret Stewart had six known children as shown here. They may have had other children who are not recorded. It is noteworthy that their earliest children up to 1756 were born at Lorachan and their later children beginning in 1763 were born at Edraleachdach. As they were the senior line, this likely indicates that James’ father was occupying Edraleachdach up to at least 1756 and died sometime before 1763 at which time James appears to have inherited Edraleachdach and occupied it. Lorachan does not appear in the Callander parish register after 1756 and appears to have been abandoned at that point.

James Stewart was deceased prior to the writing of Stewarts of the South (c. 1815), but his exact date of death is unknown. No record of his death has been found. No gravestone has been found. No testament has been found.

Alexander Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1760, based on the ages of his siblings, although no birth record has been found for Alexander.

Alexander Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South (c. 1815) as: “Alexander Stewart, [who is] brother to Walter. [He] is [a] land surveyor in England. Alexander, his brother, (it is believed that the “his brother” redundantly refers to Walter’s brother) left two sons.”

It is not known when Alexander moved to England or where in England he moved to. It is not known if he had daughters in addition to his two sons and it is not known if his children were born before or after he moved to England. His wife is also unknown. Alexander has not been identified in public records in Scotland or England.

Walter Stewart was the second son of James “Black Sergeant” Stewart and Margaret Stewart in Lorrachan, shown above.

No birth record has been found for Walter. According to Stewarts of the South, Walter Stewart was the second son of James “Black Sergeant” Stewart and Margaret Stewart in Lorachan. Walter is estimated to have been born about 1758 based on the recorded births of his siblings.

Walter is presumed to have been born at his parents’ residence of Lorachan on the north shore of Loch Katrine in Upper Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.

Walter Stewart’s older brother, John Stewart, died young, thus Walter Stewart inherited the farm of Edrleachdach when his father died. It is not known when his father died. Stewarts of the South says:

“Walter Stewart, [who is the] present tacksman of Lorachans & Edraleek [on] Loch Cathrine side [in] Callander parish [which is the] estate of Drummond. [Lorachans] was a lucrative tack from the Barons of Exchequer for a long time. [Walter had] two sons [who are both] minors. [He pays] rent £140.”

The author goes on to say,

“Walter Stewart, present tacksman of Lorachans, keeps as hospitable a house as any tenant I know, and so did his father before.”

Walter Stewart is described in the Stewarts of the South Appendix as being a man of good character, but little more is known of his life.

“No 3, Mr Walter Stewart, Tacksman of Edralecich and Lorachan, of the Glenbucky family, a good character, £140”.
(Walter’s annual rent of £140 would be about £15000 in 2025.)

On 24 Apr 1800, Walter Stewart married in Callander parish, Perthshire, Scotland to Elizabeth McDonald, daughter of Archibald McDonald in Monachyle and Margaret Stewart. Walter was likely in his early 40s at the time.

Walter Stewart and his wife are found in Mitchell’s Monumental Inscriptions for Brig of Turk Cemetery in Callander as follows:

“Walter STEWART, 22 JUN 1822, wife E. MCDONALD, 16 MAY 1848, by son James tacksman in Edraleachdach.”

Walter Stewart died on 22 July 1822:

“At Edralechkach, Strathgartney, on the 22d ultimo, Mr Walter Stewart. To his family his death has occasioned the deepest affliction, and the regret of all who had an opportunity of appreciating his many virtues.” (Inverness Courier – Thursday 18 July 1822)

Margaret’s brother, James Stewart, indicated in his last will and testament, dated 25 Nov 1870, that his sister Margaret Stewart was, at the time, residing in Callander village with her son, Walter. From this entry, it is inferred that either Margaret had an illegitimate son named Walter Stewart, or that she married a man surnamed Stewart and had a lawful child named Walter Stewart. However, no such son has been found in any census records in Callander.

Margaret Stewart has not been found in the 1841 or 1851 census records.

She may be the Margaret Stewart found in 1861 residing at 20 Main Street (Star Hotel) in Callander village, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, shown as born 1801 in Callander, employed as a laundress, and residing with a 17-year-old son named William. It is possible that this could actually be Margaret’s son Walter, whose name may have been incorrectly recorded or transcribed. However, a caution must be noted that the Callander parish register shows a William Stewart b 17 May 1844 in Callander town, son of John Stewart and Margaret MacIntyre. However, there is no other Margaret Stewart residing in Callander in 1861 who is close to the same age, and we know that Margaret resided in Callander in 1870.

No match has been found for Margaret in Callander in the 1871 census.

Margaret Stewart may be the mother of:

    1. Walter Stewart,   b. 1844, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWNNo corresponding birth record has been found in the Callander Parish Register. Walter is named in the will of his uncle James Stewart, in Edraleachdach, in which he is described as “Walter Stewart… [a son to] my sister Margaret Stewart, residing in Callander” in which an allowance is to be given for his life sustenance. Walter is believed to be found in the 1861 census residing with his mother at 20 Main Street (Star Hotel) in Callander, age 17, incorrectly identified as “William Stewart” and shown with “no occupation (of weak mind).” A caution must be noted in that the Callander OPR shows a William Stewart b 17 MAY 1844 in Callander town, son of John Stewart and Margaret MacIntyre, who could be the William Stewart found in 1861.

James Stewart was born 18 Mar 1805 in Edraleachdach in Strathgartney in Callander parish, Perthshire, Scotland to Walter Stewart and Elizabeth McDonald in Edraleachdach and Lorrachan.

James Stewart was only 17 years old when his father, Walter Stewart, died and James inherited the farmstead of Edraleachdach and Lorachan. James never married nor had any children.

In 1841, at age 30, James Stewart was residing in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, with his widowed mother. He was employed as a farmer.

In 1851, at age 46, James Stewart was residing in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, with his niece Margaret Stewart (10). He was employed as a farmer and grazier of 20 acres, employing two labourers.

In the 1857 Valuation Roll, James Stewart in Edraleachdach is listed as a tenant in Wester Dullater under the proprietorship of Mrs Agnes Eastmonth (McNaughton). Wester Dullater belonged to his sister Anne Stewart’s husband, Alexander Stewart. James Stewart in Edraleachdach is also listed as a tenant in Hill Grazings of Invertrossachs, for which the proprietor was Mrs Jane Hunter (Eastmonth). She was also proprietor of Farm of Cuilnagrain, tenanted by Robert Stewart, Mansion House of Invertrossachs, Home Farm and Grain Parks (of Invertrossachs), tenanted by Stewart McNaughton Esq.

In 1861, at age 53, James Stewart was residing in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He was employed as a sheep farmer. He was residing with his brother Archibald Stewart, b 1810. Neither have children with them.

On 15 Oct 1870, at age 65, James Stewart died at Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Upon his death, the farmstead of Edraleachdach and Lorrachan passed with conditions to his brother Archibald Stewart as noted in the testament below. It appears that Archibald did not meet these conditions and the farmstead was sold by the trustees. (See notes on Archibald Stewart for more information.)

Mary Stewart was born 25 July 1811 in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as the daughter of Walter Stewart and Elizabeth McDonald.

On 16 Jan 1835, Mary Stewart married in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, to Robert Stewart in Drunkie.

Mary Stewart is incorrectly described in The Stewarts of Ardvorlich, Vol. 3, in reference to her husband: “Robert [Stewart], a farmer at Drunkie, who married Monachyle’s sister.” Whereas, Mary was actually the daughter of Monachyle’s sister. It was her mother, Elizabeth McDonald, who was the sister of Donald and John McDonald, both of Monachyle in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.

In 1841, at age 25, Marion Stewart was residing at #1 Drunkie in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland, with her husband and children.

Mary Stewart’s husband, Robert Stewart, is presumed to have died between 1849-1851, although no record of his death has been found.

In 1851, at age 38, Mary Stewart was residing without her husband at Little Mills, Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland, with her young children. She is identified as a householder. Her husband’s whereabouts is unknown.

Sometime between 1857-1861, Mary Stewart’s husband, Robert Stewart, died.

In 1861, at age 49, Mary Stewart was residing at Loan’s (?) in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, with her children. (No such place is known. This is a transcription error at Ancestry. It’s likely Stron/Stroan/Strone.) She was identified as “formerly a farmer’s wife.”

In 1871, at age 59, Mary Stewart was residing at Lorachan House, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, with her daughters Christina and Robina. She was identified as a retired farm widow.

In 1881, at age 69, Mary Stewart was residing at Lorachan Villa, Callander, Pertshire, Scotland, with her daughter Robina Carson’s family. She is identified as a householder.

In 1891, at age 79, Mary Stewart was residing at Lorachen House, Leny Fues, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, with her daughters Robina Corson and Christina Langmuir.

Mary Stewart died a few months later on 5 Aug 1891 in Lorachan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.

Archibald Stewart, Last in Edra and in Monachyle

Archibald Stewart, Last in Edra and in Monachyle, b. 11 Apr 1807, Edraleachdach, Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. 27 Feb 1896, Monachyle, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location  (Age 88 years). Archibald Stewart was a younger son of Walter Stewart in Edraleachdach and Elizabeth McDonald, shown above.

Archibald Stewart was born 11 Apr 1807 in Edraleachdach on the north shore of Loch Katrine in Callander parish, Perthshire, Scotland, as a younger son of Walter Stewart in Edraleachdach and Elizabeth McDonald.

Being a second son, Archibald would not have expected to inherit Edraleachdach, thus he appears to have begun his adult life working on other farms, in particular his mother’s family farm at Monachyle on the north shore of Loch Voil in Balquhidder parish.

In 1841, at age 30, Archibald Stewart was residing at Monachyle farm in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, with his widowed mother in the home of her brother, Donald McDonald.

In 1851, at age 43, Archablad Stewart was residing at Wester Dullater, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland, with his wife and two young children. He was employed as a farmer employing two labourers.

Archibald Stewart has not been found in 1861 (nor have any members of his family).

On 15 Oct 1870, Archibald Stewart’s brother, James Stewart in Edraleachdach died, leaving the farmstead of Edraleachdach to Archibald with conditions:

“Trustees shall allow my brother Archibald Stewart and his son Archibald John Stewart to remain upon and manage the farm of Edraleachalach with all its possessions and furnish the trustees information about the management of the farm yearly and for five years. After 5 years, “should my said Trustees be satisfied with the management and behaviour of the said Archibald Stewart and Archibald John Stewart” they were to convey the farm and it’s possessions to them. If the trustees were dissatisfied they were to sell the farm and its contents and “invest the sum of fifteen hundred pounds sterling in their own names for behoof of the said Archibald John Stewart in liferent for his liferent use….”

In 1871, at age 54, Archibald Stewart was residing in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, with his children. He was a widower and employed as a farmer of 1600 acres (of which 28 were aerable).

In 1875, the term of the conditions for inheriting Edraleachdach would have come due for evaluation. We can infer that Archibald Stewart did not satisfy the trustees as to his ability to manage the farm with his son as in 1881, Archibald Stewart was residing back at his late uncle’s farm of Monachyle in Balquhidder.

In 1881, at age 73, Archibald Stewart was residing at Monachyle in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland in the home of his cousin Duncan Stewart of Monachyle. Archibald Stewart was employed as a retired farmer.

Given that Archibald was found in 1881, ten years after his brother’s death, residing again at Monachyle and is shown as a “retired farmer”, this would seem to indicate that he did not satisfy the conditions of the testament above and that the farms of Edraleachdach and Lorachan were sold by the trustees and dispersed as per above. It must be noted that the trustees would have received £1500 each for their services in the event that Archibald failed to satisfy them of his fulfillment of the conditions. Such a huge payment could have influenced their evaluation of Archibald’s success. (£1500 in 1871 is worth roughly £225,000, or $300,000 USD, or $425,000 CAD/AUD in 2025.)

In 1891, at age 83, Archibald Stewart was residing at Monachyle, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, in the home of his cousin, John McDonald Stewart McDonald of Monachyle. Archibald Stewart was identified as “grand-uncle” to John, however, this is not entirely accurate as their connection was through Archibald’s mother.

On 27 Feb 1896, at age 90, Archibald Stewart died at Monachyle in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.

“At Monachyle, Lochearnhead, on the 27th Inst., Archibald Stewart, late of Edra, Loch Katrine, in his 89th year. Friends, accept this (the only) intimation. Funeral from Monachyle to Brig o’ Turk, on Tues 3d March at 9 am.”

No record of John Stewart’s birth has been found. He is only found in the 1871 census with his parents. No other record of John has been found.

In 1871, at age 20, Archibald Stewart was residing in Edra (Edraleachdach), Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, with his parents and siblings (including his brother John Stewart). He was employed as a farm servant.

He may be the Archibald J Stewart found in 1881, at age 31, residing at Bracklinn Cottage, Main Street, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, with his wife, Bessie, and son Archibald. However, there is insufficient evidence to confirm this is the same person.

Archibald Stewart has not been confidently identified in later records.

Robert Stewart, [who is] brother to [the] foresaid James (believed to refer to James, the late tacksman of [L]orachans).  [He] was [a] tacksman at Gartmore [in] Port [of] Monteith parish.  [He] had four sons:

    1. James (or George) Stewart, [a] cottager [in] Aberfoil [in the] Lordship of Monteith.  He has:
      1. two sons with their father
    2. James (or George) Stewart, [who is a] householder [in the] village of Gartmore.  [He has] three sons
      1. the first is a mason
      2. the second a gardener
      3. the third is a shoemaker
    3. Patrick Stewart [who is] a tailor in Glasgow.  [He has] four or five sons.
    4. Duncan Stewart, [who is] a labourer in Glasgow [and has] a family of sons.

It is important to note that there were two Robert Stewarts living in Gartmore at the same time. (See below for more information on the other Robert Stewart in Gartmore.)

This family has not been confidently identified as the data does not match well with the description in Stewarts of the South. We account for this family below:

Robert Stewart in Gartmore

Robert Stewart, in Gartmore, b. Abt 1732, Edraleachdach, Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. Bef 1815  (Age < 82 years).

Robert Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1732 at Edraleachdach in Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He was a younger brother of James Stewart in Edraleachdach, known as “The Black Sergeant” however, their parents are not recorded. It is suspected, but not confirmed, that their parents were John Stewart and Agnes Stewart whose only recorded son was Alexander in 1722.

He is believed to be the Robert Stewart in Gartmore cited in the Port of Menteith Kirk Session Minutes receiving assistance for school wages for his children. (“1774 Aprile 3 – Item to Pay Robert Stewart’s Childrens ditto School wages in Do Town of Gartmore, 9 (shillings)” — Port of Menteith Kirk Session Minutes)

Agnes Stewart, b. 13 Feb 1758, Craigmuck, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. UNKNOWN.

Agnes Stewart was born 13 Feb 1758 in Craigmuck, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland, as the daughter of Robert Stewart and Elizabeth McFarlane. Craigmuck is located nextdoor to Duchray in Aberfoyle parish. It may have been her mother’s home.

2. John? Stewart, b. Abt 1760, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN

John? Stewart,   b. Abt 1760, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN

There is no record that John exists. There is a four-year gap into which an extra birth likely fits and, if our accounting is correct, then Robert’s eldest son should be named John. If this John existed at all, it is presumed that he died in childhood as he is not named in Stewarts of the South.

3. James Stewart, b. 29 Jan 1762, Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN

James Stewart, b. 29 Jan 1762, Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. UNKNOWN.

James Stewart was born 20 Jan 1762 in Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as the son of Robert Stewart and Elizabeth McFarlane, however his baptism was recorded in Aberfoyle parish. He was likely born at Letter of Strathgartney where his brother George was born two years later.

Stewarts of the South describes James Stewart as the eldest son or Robert Stewart in Gartmore: “James Stewart, [a] cottager [in] Aberfoil [in the] Lordship of Monteith. He has two sons with their father.

There is no family in the Aberfoyle parish register that matches this description, however the following family in Gartmore is an excellent match. It fits chronologically, geographically, and onomastically. However, it is not confirmed.

James Stewart and Agnes McNab:

    1. Janet F 15/8/1791 daughter of James Agnes McNab in Gartmore
    2. Robert M 10/12/1793 son of James Agnes McNab
    3. James M 13/11/1794 son of James Agnes McNab in Gartmore

George Stewartb. 5 Aug 1764, Letter, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. Aft 1815  (Age > 52 years)

George Stewart was born 5 Aug 1764 in Letter of Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as the son of Robert Stewart and Elizabeth McFarlane. (Letter is located on the north shore of Loch Katrine, nextdoor to Edraleachdach, George’s father’s birthplace.)

Stewarts of the South has incorrectly George’s name as James Stewart:

“James (sic, George) Stewart, [who is a] householder [in the] village of Gartmore. [He has] three sons: the first is a mason; the second a gardener; the third is a shoemaker.”

The following family is the only George Stewart in Gartmore, however, this family is a generation too late to be correct:

George Stewart and Catherine Cairns

    1. James M 22/10/1812 son of Geo. Catherine Cairns Gartmore
    2. Mary F 22.12/1817 daughter of George Catharine Cairns
    3. George M 30/11/1818 son of George Catharine Cairns Gartmore born 30 Nov bapt 20 Dec 1818

Duncan is described in Stewarts of the South as: “Duncan Stewart, [who is] a labourer in Glasgow [and has] a family of sons.” He is recorded at his baptism in the Port of Menteith parish register by his substitute name of “David” Stewart.

Duncan/David has not been found in later records.

The Other Robert Stewart in Gartmore

*NOTE – There was another Robert Stewart in Gartmore, contemporary with this one, who also had four sons. He was from Gartnafuaran Branch IV

Alexander Stewart that was in Grodich, had a brother who was [a] tenant in Auchinaird [in] Glenfinglas, who left a son called

      1. Robert, late resident in Gartmore. This Robert left four sons, [namely]
        1. one a printer in Campsie who has a family of three sons under age
        2. another a printer at Bonhill [in] Dunbartonshire who has a family of two sons
        3. another at the Shaws near Glasgow
        4. and another who is a soldier serving in Ireland and has a large family

3-Line – The Stewarts in Bochastle

The Stewarts in Bochastle are the third line of descendants of the Stewarts in Edraleachdach and Lorachan. They are cousins of an unknown degree to 1-Line and 2-Line, shown above. They resided at Bochastle in Callander parish in historic Perthshire, Scotland (present-day Stirling Council Area), just below the mouth of the Pass of Leny, about one kilometre west of the Village of Callander. Bochastle farm encompasses the site of a first-century Roman fort.

The Stewarts in Bochastle are described in Stewarts of the South as:

Alexander Stewart, [a] tacksman of Bochastaill [in] Callander parish [on the] Earl of Murray’s estate [which was] bought from Drummond of Perth. [It is] one of the prettiest farms in Perthshire. [He] left five sons:

    1. Charles Stewart, innkeeper in Callander – no sons
    2. Walter Stewart, a merchant in Callander – no family of sons
    3. David Stewart, a spirit dealer in Glasgow [who has] two sons [who are] doing well
    4. Peter Stewart, [a] cow-feeder in Glasgow [who has] three sons
    5. Alexander Stewart, [who is also a] cow-feeder in Glasgow [and has] one son who is an English Rider and [is] doing well.

While Stewarts of the South begins its description of this family with Alexander Stewart in Bochastle, the Callander Parish Register identifies Alexander’s father as James Stewart when James witnessed the baptism of Alexander’s son, Charles. Thus we can confidently begin our accounting of this family with James Stewart, father of Alexander Stewart in Bochastle (shown immediately below).

James Stewart in Corriechrombie and Coilantogle

James Stewart, in Corriechrombie & Coilantogle (Edra 3-4-Line),   b. Abt 1685, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN. His parents are unknown. He descends by unknown means from Duncan “Oig” Stewart, son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie.

James Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1685 in Callander parish, Perthshire, Scotland. His parents are unknown. He is a highly promising, but unconfirmed candidate to be the progenitor of 3-Line and 4-Line of the Stewarts in Edraleachdach. His first son Alexander (born 1711) is an ideal candidate to be Alexander Stewart in Bochastle of 3-Line. His son Duncan (born 1719) is an ideal candidate to be Duncan Stewart in Coilantogle of 4-Line.

James Stewart’s name is known to us from the baptism of his grandson Charles Stewart in 1746, son of Alexander Stewart, latterly in Bochastle, where James Stewart is named as the sponsor and paternal grandfather of the baby.

James Stewart is identified in Stewarts of the South c.1815 as the patriarch of 3-Line of the Stewarts in Edraleachdach. James Stewart descends by unknown means from James mac Alastir mhic Dhunachy Stewart, grandson of Duncan “Oig” Stewart, son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie.

James Stewart is suspected to be the person who was identified in 1728 as James Stewart, son of Robert Stewart in Edrelechoch, who was mentioned as a creditor in a testament by ___ Finlayson. Confirmed 8 Feb 1728 by Alexander Stewart of Glenbuckie.

Marriage and Children

James Stewart is believed to have married firstly about 1710 to Catherine Stewart, although no record of their marriage has been found. (Callander parish did not begin recording marriages until 1710.)

James and Catherine Stewart had two children in Tombae, directly across the Garbh Uisge from Corriechrombie. A river ford linked the two properties.

Their first child, Donald Stewart, was born in Corriechrombie in 1716.

About 1717, James and his family moved from Lower Strathyre a few miles away to Coilantogle and Blairgarry in Lower Strathgartney where they had the remainder of their ten children (with one anomalous exception in Culnagrain in Port of Menteith, near where Janet McKeoun was born.)

James Stewart and Janet McKeoun had the following children:

Mary’s mother’s surname is recorded as McKernin in our transcription of the Callander Parish Register. This is believed to be a transcription error for McKeown. Mary is presumed to have died prior to the birth of her same-named sister in 1724.

Mary’s exact place of birth is not recorded in the Callander Parish Register, but is presumed to be Coilantogle where her other contemporary siblings were born.

The Callander Parish Register records that James Stuart and Jan. Mceuan in Culinteagle had a daughter, Mary born on the 15th and baptized on the 19th. However there is no month given in the entry. It is recorded between 2 Dec 1723 and 13 Mar 1724, so it could represent 15 Dec 1723, 15 Jan 1724 or 15 Feb 1724. The January date has been chosen arbitrarily to record it in this database. Her actual date of birth could be any one of those three dates.

James Stewart, Baker in Dunfermline?,   b. 30 Nov 1726, Glengarry, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN.

James Stewart was born 30 Nov 1726 in Glengarry, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as the son of James Stewart and Janet McKeoun. Glengarry has not been found on maps and is likely a cottage on the Blairgarry estate on the north shore of Loch Venacher.

On 6 Dec 1755, the Callander parish register records the marriage of John Stewart and Catharine Ferguson. This is believed to be a clerical error for James Stewart and Catharine Ferguson. (“1755, John (sic?) Stewart in this parish and Catharine Fergusson in the parish of Balquhidder listed themselves to be proclaimed in order to marriage 6th Dec and were married 17th December.” — This entry is shown as John Stewart in our transcription and ScotlandsPeople, but no children are found for such a couple and no marriage is found for the following couple.)

An alternate possible marriage has been found on 28 Jan 1758 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland for James Stewart and Katherine Ferguson.

On 5 Feb 1757, James Stewart and Katherine Ferguson had twins, James and Janet, in Edraleachdach in Upper Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, after which they disappear from records.

James Stewart may be the person referred to in Stewarts of the South as “The above Duncan (patriarch of 4 Line) had a brother [who was] a baker in Dunfermline with a family.”

As this Alexander Stewart shares his forename with his half-brother, it is likely that he either died young or had a by-name to distinguish him from his same-named half-brother.

10. Walter Stewart, Baker in Dunfermline?, b. 25 Feb 1730, Milntown of Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN

Walter Stewart, Baker in Dunfermline?,   b. 25 Feb 1730, Milntown of Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN.

Walter Stewart was born 25 Feb 1730 in Milntown of Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland as a son of James Stewart and Janet McKeoun. His mother’s surname was recorded as McIrnin in the Callander Parish Register.

On 21 Apr 1758 Walter Stewart married in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, to Mary Stewart. (“1758, Walter Stewart and Mary Stewart both in this parish were listed to be proclaimed in order to marriage 8th April and after being orderly proclaimed were married 21st.” — Callander Parish Register)

Walter Stewart and Mary Stewart began their family in Edraleachdach on the north shore of Loch Katrine in Upper Strathgartney in the remote west end of Callander parish, Perthshire, Scotland. They had one recorded child in 1759 then disappear from records until 1767 when they appear to be found in Glenbuckie. However, the latter Glenbuckie family could be a separate family with same-named parents.

Walter Stewart may be the person referred to in Stewarts of the South as “The above Duncan (patriarch of 4 Line) had a brother [who was] a baker in Dunfermline with a family.”

Alexander Stewart in Bochastle and Corriechrombie

Alexander Stewart, in Bochastle and Corriechrombie, b. 30 Nov 1711, Tombae, Strathyre, Callander, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. UNKNOWN. Alexander Stewart was the son of James Stewart in Corriechrombie and Coilantogle and Catherine Stewart, shown above.

Alexander Stewart was born 30 Nov 1711 in Tombae, directly across the Garbh Uisge River from Corriechrombie in Lower Strathyre, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as the son of James Stewart and Catherine Stewart.

Alexander Stewart is identified in Stewarts of the South (c. 1815) as residing in Bochastle and as being the patriarch of 3-Line of the Stewarts in Edraleachdach and Lorachan. He is described as: “Alexander Stewart, [a] tacksman of Bochastaill [in] Callander parish [on the] Earl of Murray’s estate [which was] bought from Drummond of Perth. [It is] one of the prettiest farms in Perthshire. [He] left five sons.”

On 23 Feb 1746, Alexander Stewart was residing in Coilantogle in Lower Strathgartney when he had an illegitimate son named Charles with Mary McFarlane in nearby Woodend of Leny. The child was baptized on 2 May 1746 and is identified as “begotten in fornication” with “James Stewart, his father, being sponsor.” From this entry, we can confirm that Alexander’s father was James Stewart.

On 10 May 1746, just a week after the baptism of his illegitimate son, Alexander Stewart married in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Beatrice Stewart. Her birth family has not been identified. They were listed as both being in the parish. (“1747, Alexander STEWART and Beatrix STEWART both in this parish listed themselves to be proclaimed in order to marriage 2nd May and being orderly proclaimed got extract to be married by the minister of Comrie 18th May.” — Callander Parish Register)

Alexander Stewart and Beatrice Stewart had their first child in 1748 at his family’s ancestral home of Edraleachdach, which may also have been near Beatrice’s home. She is suspected to be from the Stewarts in Strone.

Their first son was named Charles, which breaks from the traditional naming pattern. Charles appears to have been named after Alexander’s brother. Their second son, also born in Edraleachdach, is named James, which appears to commence the traditional naming pattern. Their third son was named Walter which may suggest that Beatrice’s father’s name was Walter. If she came from Upper Strathgartney and her father’s name was Walter, then she is likely a descendant of Walter nan Cliugh Stewart of the Stewarts in Strone.

Alexander Stewart appears to have acquired his tack of Bochastle between 1754-1759 at which time his son Walter was born in Brae of Bochastle.

Alexander Stewart’s first wife, Beatrice, died sometime between Nov 1759 (the birth of their last child) and 1765.

On 10 Feb 1766, Alexander Stewart married in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Christian King. They were recorded as both in Callander parish. (“1766, Alexander Stewart and Christian King both in this parish listed their names for proclamation in order to marriage the 8th February and were married the 10th of Feb.” — Callander Parish Register)

Alexander Stewart and Christian King went on to have a further four children in Alexander’s birth home of Corriechrombie. This may indicate that Alexander’s father had died by this point and Alexander may have inherited his father’s interest in Corriechrombie.

It is not known when Alexander Stewart died.

Marriages and Children

Alexander Stewart had relations with Mary McFarlane, in Woodend of Leny,   b. Abt 1720,   d. UNKNOWN. They had the following illegitimate son:

Charles Stewart was born 3 Mar 1748 in Edraleachdach, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as the son of Alexander Stewart and Beatrice Stewart. (The date of Charles’ birth/baptism is unclear. The baptism is listed with 1748 baptisms but is indexed as having taken place in 1740. ScotlandsPeople says the birth took place on 3 Mar 1740, but says “date assumed.” The original parish register images need to be consulted for confirmation. As this couple were married in 1746 and the birth is not recorded as illegitimate, then it seems 1748 is more likely the correct date.)

It appears that Charles was likely named after his paternal uncle.

Charles Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South (c. 1815) as: “Charles Stewart, innkeeper in Callander – no sons.” The Callander parish register shows no daughters for him either.

As Charles Stewart had no children, there is no further record of him in the Callander parish register. He did not live long enough to be recorded in any census records. No other record of him has been found.

It is not known if Alexander’s son was born in Callander or Glasgow.

It is not known what the author meant by “English Rider.” It’s not clear if the author was refering to a style of riding or that Alexander’s son lived in England. The distinction between English and Western styles of horse riding is largely a North American description which emerged later in the 19th century.

4 Line – Duncan Stewart in Coilantogle

Duncan Stewart, in Coilantogle,   b. 10 Apr 1719, Coilantogle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN. Duncan Stewart is believed to be a son of James Stewart in Corriechrombie and Coilantogle and Janet McKeoun, of 3-Line above.

(“1719 – James Steuart and Janet McCoan in Culintogle had son born and baptized on 10th Aprile, named Duncan.” — Callander Parish Register)

Duncan Stewart was the progenitor of 4-Line of the Stewarts in Edraleachdach. Stewarts of the South, c. 1815-1820, accounts for this family as follows:

Duncan Stewart,  [a] late tacksman [at] Cuilanleogail [in] Callander parish [on the] Earl of Murray’s estate.  [He] left three sons:

  1. Duncan, a labourer to the Earl of Murray near Doune Lodge.  [He has] four sons:

Coilantogle is located in Callander parish, just west of the Village of Callander and immediately west of Bochastle farm. It is located adjacent to Portnellan farm where Peter Stewart of this line (shown below) resided in his later years.

Marriage and Children

Duncan Stewart’s wife has not been confirmed. He may be the Duncan Stewart who had the following children with Margaret Wright. (No marriage has been found for them.)

    1. Agnes Stewart, born 28 Oct 1770 in Burn of Cambus. Witt. Donald McCulloch in Doun and Donald McDonald in Burn of Cambus

Donald Stewart has not been identified in public records. Stewarts of the South c. 1815 says that Donald resided at Summerline on the Flanders Moss.

Donald, [at] Summerline Flanders Moss [in] Kincardine parish. [He has] four sons: two of them [are] soldiers who performed actions becoming the descendants of their progenitors; the other two [are] with their father

However, the 1814 Blair Drummond Moss Census shows no such person. Stewarts of the South is wrong in its description of Donald Stewart. Even if Stewarts of the South got his name wrong, there is no stray Stewart family on the Moss that could be him that hasn’t been accounted for already in our database.

The only possible match in the 1814 Blair Drummond Moss Cenus is a residence that shows a Donald Stewart formerly living there. However, the Blair Drummond Moss Census was conducted at least 1-3 years prior to the authoring of Stewarts of the South. The only other possiblity is that Donald moved to the moss after 1814 and prior to the authoring of Stewarts of the South.

John Stewart, Innkeeper in Doune,   b. Abt 1775, Coilantogle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN.

John Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1775 in Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of Duncan Stewart in Coilantogle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, of 4-Line of the Stewarts of Edraleachdach.

Stewarts of the South c. 1815 identifies John Stewart as an innkeeper in the village of Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland:

3. John, [who is an] innkeeper [in] Doune. [He has] three sons [who are] minors.”

John Stewart is also listed in the Appendix to Stewarts of the South along with his brother, Duncan Stewart in Colvey. John is shown as residing in Doune:

8. Duncan Stewart, tenant [in] Culvui (Cuilbhuidh), of the Glenbuckie family, industrious, [on] Buchanan of Auchleshie’s property, £20
9. John Stewart, his brother, [illegible*] in Doune property and lands, a real Christian of Bowles, the above family (Glenbuckie), [on the] Earl [of] Murray’s estate, £20
(* Likely “Innkeeper” or similar. These match the descriptions of Edraleachdach 4-Line.)

There are only two persons named John Stewart listed in the Kilmadock parish register as having children at this time. The other John has already been accounted for in our database and the John shown here was having children in Doune. His earliest confirmed children were born in Auchleshie, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland in the far northwest end of the parish, very close to the village of Callander, a mere 3 km from Coilantogle. Auchleshie is located on the Keltie Burn which forms the boundary between Kilmadock and Callander parishes.

If correctly identified, then John Stewart married on 2 Dec 1803 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet McQueen. They had seven children, first in Auchleshie and later in Doune.

However, his earliest confirmed son’s name is James Buchanan Stewart which does not fit onomastically if his father’s name was supposedly Duncan, unless John was not following the traditional naming pattern.

A birth is registered for a son, Duncan Stewart, born 5 May 1792 in Callander village to parents John Stewart and Katherine McNab. They have no other recorded children and no marriage has been found for them. This could be an earlier relationship for the same John Stewart whose wife may have died. Or it could be a different John Stewart who emigrated.

None of the children shown here to John Stewart, from either supposed relationship have been found in later records in Scotland. The entire family disappears from Scottish records after 1819 which suggests they likely emigrated after 1820 (the estimated time of the completion of Stewarts of the South) and prior to the 1841 census. Their destination has not been found. No online trees have been found to claim descent from this family. As hundreds of emigrant ships sank in this time period, it’s possible that this family never made it to their destination.

Duncan Stewart in Colveny/Colvey/Heads

Duncan Stewart, in Colveny-Heads, b. Abt 1770, Coilantogle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN. Duncan Stewart was the eldest surviving son of Duncan Stewart in Coilantogle, shown above.

Duncan Stewart is estimated to have been born abt 1770, in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of Duncan Stewart in Coilantogle. His mother is unknown. No birth record has been found for him.

Duncan Stewart resided at Colvey/Colveny which is also known as Heads.

Stewarts of the South, c. 1815, identifies Duncan as the eldest surviving son of Duncan Stewart in Coilantogle and describes him as:

“Duncan, a labourer to the Earl of Murray near Doune Lodge. [He has] four sons: One of them in the Earl’s service; the rest are minors.”

Duncan is shown as having a younger brother, John, who was an innkeeper in Doune. Duncan Stewart is identified in the Appendix to Stewarts of the South, specifically residing at Colvey and as the brother of John Stewart in Doune. Colvey/Colveny is only 2.5 km from Doune Lodge (Cambus Wallace).

8. Duncan Stewart, tenant [in] Culvui (Cuilbhuidh), of the Glenbuckie family, industrious, [on] Buchanan of Auchleshie’s property, £20

The Kilmadock Parish Register shows Duncan Stewart and Christian Walker having children in Colveny between 1795-1814, which matches the age range and location listed in Stewarts of the South.

Duncan Stewart married on 1 Dec 1794 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Christian Walker. The marriage was also registered on 30 Dec 1794 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.

They had 8 children including six sons who are the correct ages to match with the descriptions in Stewarts of the South. As Stewarts of the South identifies only four sons then two of Duncan’s sons must have died before 1815. Only three of his sons have been found in later records: Robert, Archibald and Peter.

In 1841, at age 40, Christian Stewart was residing at Buchany, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. Also residing with her was 17-year-old Helen Stewart. (Helen is believed to be the daughter of Alexander Stewart, 3rd in Carse of Cambus.)

In 1851, at age 53, Christian Stewart was residing at Buchany, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. She was employed as a laundress.

In 1861, at age 55 (sic), Christian Stewart was residing at Colvey (Colveny or Heads), Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, in the home of her brother, Archibald Stewart. She was employed as a domestic servant. Also residing with them was their 1-year-old nephew, Peter Stewart (son of her brother, Peter Stewart).
