The Stewarts in Glentarken on Loch Earn, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland

Branch VIII of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie

Well, sort of in Glentarken

The eighth branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie is a family of Stewarts who are said to have come from Glen Tarken at the northeast end of Loch Earn in Comrie parish, just a few miles east of Glen Buckie and Balquhidder. However, there is record that the descendants of this family (shown below) ever lived in Glen Tarken. If this family came from Glen Tarken then it was likely in the 17th century prior to the advent of local parish records.

During the 18th century, this family is found mostly in Glen Buckie, Glen Finglas and Auchraw. By the early 19th century many members of this family had migrated to the nearby new planned Village of Strathyre, known colloquially as “Ninevah of Strathyre” due to the purponderance of drinking establishments.

Ancestors of the Stewarts of the Stewarts in Glentarken

The Stewarts in Glentarken descend by uncertain means from an earlier branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie. Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, describes this family with spartan brevity. Saying only that:

[The] Glentarken Stewarts at Lochearnside [are] a bastard race [from] far back.

This entry tells us only that this family descends from an unidentified illegitimate son of an earlier branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie. There is insufficient evidence to identify him more precisely.

Stewarts of the South identifies two lines of descendants of this family, the first of which were said to have been tacksmen of the Kirkton farm at Balquhidder “for a long time,” although the length of that tenure is unknown. the second line of descendants lived at Ardcheanochdan and Auchnahard in Glen Finglas.

The latest that these two descendant lines could reasonably converge is about 1670, with a theoretical common grandfather of the two patriarchs, Walter Clachain Stewart, and James Stewart in Ardcheanochdan and Auchnahard, shown below. If the family had already been in Glen Tarken for a generation or two prior to that theoretical common grandfather then their descent from the main Stewarts of Glenbuckie line would likely date to the early 17th century.

This makes Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie, or one of his sons, the most likely candidates to have fathered the illegitimate ancestor of this family. Onomastically, the most likely candidate would be an illegitimate son of Walter nan Cleugh Stewart of Strone and Forester of Glen Finglas, patriarch of VI-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie.

A theoretical reconstruction of the early generations of this family could resemble this:

    • Walter nan Cleugh Stewart of Strone and Forester of Glen Finglas, born c. 1578, patriarch ov VI-Branch
      • various sons who were progenitors of Lines 1-5 of the Stewarts in Strone, born c. 1605-1620
      • an illegitimate son, born c. 1600, who settled in Glentarken
        • unknown son, born c. 1635 in Glentarken
          • unknown son, born c. 1670 in Glentarken
            • James? Stewart in Kirkton, born c. 1695 in Glentarken, who may be the one who acquired the tack of the Kirkton farm (see below)
              • Walter Clachain Stewart (1-Line, below), born. c. 1730 in Kirkton of Balquhidder
            • Alexander? Stewart in Glentarken, born c. 1700 in Glentarken
              • James Stewart in Ardcheanochdan and Auchnahard (2-Line, below), born c. 1730 in Glentarken

It is important to stress that the preceding genealogy is theoretical only and is not confirmed.

Descendants of the Stewarts in Glentarken

After the sparse description of the origin of this family, the author of Stewarts of the South then proceeds to describe the two descendant lines of this family:

    • 1-Line – The Stewarts in Kirkton, Lianach, and Village of Strathyre
    • 2-Line – The Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan and Invercarnaig

These descendant lines are presented in detail below.

1-Line – The Stewarts in Kirkton, Lianach, and Village of Strathyre

The first line of descendants of the so-called Glentarken Stewarts are described in Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, as follows:

Walter Stewart, late tacksman of Lianoch [of] Glenbuckie [who was] called Valtair Chlachain. His progenitors were tacksmen of [the] Kirkton [of] Balquhidder for a long time, but lost it by some crook at law. This man left two sons:

1 James Stewart, [a] tenant [in] Innirvulin [in] Strathyre [in] Balquhidder [on] Buchanan of Cambusmor’s estate. [He has] five sons, [and pays] rent [of] £50.  [His sons are:]

1 Walter, a marble cutter in Glasgow, [who has] no sons (He may have had daughters.)

2 Robert, [who is] at home with his father

3 Duncan, a smith at Aberfoil.  [He has] one son a minor

4 & 5 John & James minors

2 son, John Stewart, brother to James. [He] died in Strathyre [and] left four sons [who are] minors. This John died at Nineveh of Strathyre, a village erected by the late Mr Buchanan of Cambusmore — a place as bad as Nineveh of Old.

Ninevah of Strathyre

The village of Strathyre was built in 1750 on the lands of the former farmstead of Immerioch by Buchanan of Cambusmore in Kilmadock parish (believed to refer to John Buchanan of Auchleshie whose 19th century descendant held Cambusmore) as part of an 18th-century housing scheme to try to move Highland crofters down out of the hills and into small villages. The nearby villages of Lochearnhead to the north and Callander to the south were built with similar intentions. In its earliest days the Village of Strathyre was nicknamed “Nineveh” after the biblical town of the same name due to the large number of inns and ale houses located there.

Walter Stewart in Lianach of Glenbuckie

The earliest documented ancestor of this line is Walter Clachain Stewart (c. 1730-?) who resided at Lianach of Glenbuckie and whose forebears are described as having resided for “a long time” at the Kirkton of Balquhidder. Walter’s sons resided at the Village of Strathyre.

Walter Clachain Stewart,   b. Abt 1730, Kirkton, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. UNKNOWN

Walter Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1730 at the Kirkton farm in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to unknown parents. His birth record has not been found and may not have survived. His father’s name is unknown but may have been James.

Walter Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, as being the patriarch of 1-Line of the Stewarts in Glentarken, as shown above.

Walter Stewart’s nickname “Clachain” means “village”, thus he is “Walter of the Village.” The meaning behind his nickname is uncertain. The author’s later description of the erecting of the village of Strathyre may suggest that Walter helped build the village. Both of his sons ended up living in Strathyre.

Walter Clachain Stewart married on 21 Apr 1758 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Mary Stewart. Mary Stewart is suspected, but not confirmed, to be a daughter of one of the Stewart in Edraleachdach families.

Walter and Mary Stewart had three documented children, but given the gaps between their births, it is likely they had several more children whose baptism records have not survived. If so, then it is likely that those children were either sons who died young or daughters as the author does not regularly mention daughters.

Walter Clachain Stewart’s date and location of death is unknown.

James Stewart was born 8 Jun 1759 in Edraleachdach, Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as the eldest son of Walter Clachan Stewart and Mary Stewart, shown above. His parents moved back to Immeroin and Lianach in Glenbuckie, Perthshire, Scotland, when he was a young boy.

James Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, as being a son of Walter Clachan Stewart, and as:

“James Stewart, [a] tenant [in] Innirvulin [in] Strathyre [in] Balquhidder [on] Buchanan of Cambusmor’s estate. [He has] five sons, [and pays] rent [of] £50. [His sons are:]

2 Robert, [who is] at home with his father
3 Duncan, a smith at Aberfoil. [He has] one son a minor
4 & 5 John & James minors.”

On 17 Jul 1784, James Stewart married in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, to Jean Stewart. He was residing at Carstran at the southwest end of Loch Earn at the time. “1784 July 17th Contracted James Stewart in Castaran in this parish and Jean Stewart in Ardvorlich in the parish of Comrie. Dues 1 sh ster.” (Balquhidder Parish Register)

James Stewart and Jean Stewart had eight children. Jean is believed to have died sometime between 1794-1808. James Stewart is believed to have married secondly about 1809 to Margaret McNab although no record of their marriage has been found. They had four more children, three of whom were in the Village of Strathyre.

Stewarts of the South describes his residence as Immervoulin which is at the south end of the Village of Strathyre.

James’ last son, Donald, is not identified in Stewarts of the South suggesting that the entry was written before Donald was born in 1818.

James Stewart’s date of death is unknown. He is presumed to have died at Immervoulin in Strathyre. No record of his death or burial has been found.

Marriage and Children

On 17 Jul 1784, James Stewart married in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, to Jean Stewart. They had the following children:

1. Janet Stewart, b. 15 Jun 1785, Carstran, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, d. 13 May 1855, Deanston, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland

Janet Stewart was born 15 Jun 1785 in Carstran at the north end of Strathyre, in Balquhidder parish, Perthshire, Scotland, as the eldest daughter and first child of James Stewart and Jean Stewart. Her parents’ names are confirmed by her death record below.

Janet Stewart married on 14 Jun 1804 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, to Duncan Carmichael. This marriage makes sense as Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, tells us that Janet’s father’s family came from Glen Tarken and the Carmichael family lived predominantly at Wester Glentarken and Derry on the northeast shore of Loch Earn.

They had two children at Ardvorlich on the south shore of Loch Earn where Janet’s mother’s family lived.

About 1810, Janet Stewart and her husband Duncan Carmichael and their two young children moved to Rossburn Lane on the Blair Drummond Moss in Kincardine by Doune parish in Perthshire, Scotland, where they had three or four more children. They are listed in the 1814 Blair Drummond Moss Census as residing at #4 Rossburn Lane and having moved from Lochearnside three years before.

Sometime between 1827-1841, Janet and Duncan moved from Doune Village to nearby Deanston to reside in the Division Housing at Deanston Works.

Janet’s husband, Duncan Carmichael, died in 1841 just prior to the 1841 census.

In 1841, at age 55, Janet Carmichael was residing at Fifth Division, Deanston Village, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. Her late husband likely worked at Deanston Works Mill. She is listed as a widow. Her teenage daughters Isabella, Mary, and Catherine were residing with her.

In 1851, at age 64, Janet Stewart was residing at Doune Village, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, with her adult daughters, Jane, Janet, and Catherine.

Janet Carmichael died at age 70 on 13 May 1855 in Deanston, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland and is buried in Kilmadock Cemetery. Her death registration confirms her parents’ names were James Stewart and Jean Stewart and that she was born in Balquhidder.

She may be the Isabella Stewart, in the 1841 census, age 55, residing in Back Row of Callander Village, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, alone as a spinster. However, there is insufficient information to confirm that it is her and not a different Isabella Stewart.

Isabella has not been identified in later records.

Walter Stewart was born 29 Nov 1788 in Callander Village, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of James Stewart and Jean Stewart.

Walter Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, as being a son of James Stewart in Immervoulin, who was son of Walter Clachan Stewart. They belonged to 1-Line of the Stewarts in Glentarken who were VIII-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie. Walter Stewart is specifically described as:

“Walter, a marble cutter in Glasgow, [who has] no sons.”

We cannot determine from this entry if Walter Stewart married or not or if he had children. The author merely says that he had no sons. As the author rarely mentioned daughters, it is possible that Walter Stewart may have married and had a family of daughters.

Walter Stewart has not been found in the 1841 census or any later records.

Walter Stewart’s date and place of death is unknown. His last known location was Glasgow in 1815.

Duncan Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1794 in Lianach of Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland as a son of James Stewart and Jean Stewart, although no record of his birth has been found.

Duncan is known to us only because he is mentioned in Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, as being a son of James Stewart in Immervoulin: “Duncan, a smith at Aberfoil. [He has] one son a minor.”

Neither Duncan Stewart, nor his son, has been identified in later records. Every James Stewart son of Duncan Stewar born between 1800-1820 in Balquhidder, Aberfoyle, Callander, Kilmadock, and Port of Menteith parish has been accounted for. If this Duncan had a son and named him after his father, then his baptism record has not survived.

John Stewart was born 3 Dec 1773 in Lianach of Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, as the youngest son of Walter Clachan Stewart and Mary Stewart, shown above.

John Stewart is identified in Stewarts of the South, Section II, as being the youngest of two surviving sons to Walter Clachan Stewart in Lianach. He is further described as:

“John Stewart, brother to James. [He] died in Strathyre [and] left four sons [who are] minors. This John died at Nineveh of Strathyre, a village erected by the late Mr Buchanan of Cambusmore — a place as bad as Nineveh of Old.”

(Ninevah was a nickname for Strathyre Village coined in response to the number of ale houses and drinking establishments.)

This entry tells us that John Stewart had a family of at least four sons (the author rarely mentions daughters) and that he died prematurely prior to 1815-1820 when the entry was written. It tells that he died at Strathyre, but that does not mean his family lived at Strathyre.

(Two families are found in the Balquhidder parish register that potentially match this description — neither matches exactly; both were residing in Auchraw/Achra just east of Lochearnhead where other members of this extended family also lived. The other family is John Stewart and Margaret McDonald in Achra who have been identified elsewhere in this database as John Stewart in Wester Achra belonging to the Stewarts of Glenogle.)

While baptismal records only identify one son for John Stewart and Margaret McIntyre (the eldest, Walter, named after his paternal grandfather), census records and death records allow us to identify two additional sons, Donald and John, whose baptism records have not survived. One additional son must be missing if the Stewarts of the South account of four sons is correct.

John Stewart married on 9 Dec 1803 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, to Margaret McIntyre. They had four known children and at least one additional undocumented son.

According to Stewarts of the South, John Stewart died prior to the writing of that document c. 1815-1820.

John Stewart was born in 1815 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of John Stewart and Margaret McIntyre, shown above, although no record of his birth has been found. His birth year and location are derived from census records and his parents are identified in his death registration. He was previously believed to belong to the Stewarts in Torrie and Brackland because this family latterly resided in Easter Torrie. However, new evidence shows his correct ancestry is the Stewarts in Glentarken (Branch VIII of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie).

John Stewart’s father died sometime between 1815-1820 when John was just an infant.

John Stewart has not been confidently identified in the 1841 census. He may be the John Stewart, age 25, residing at Easter Bracklands #5 with Alexander Stewart in Easter Brackland, employed as an agricultural labourer.

On 21 Jan 1846, John Stewart married in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Elizabeth McCallum (family records give the marriage date as 14 Jan 1893 – probably a typo for 1843). Elizabeth was born 1820 in Fortingall, Perthshire, Scotland and died 1894. They are recorded as both being from the parish of Kilmadock.

In 1851, at age 30, John Stewart was residing at Drumbowie House at the south end of Loch Drunkie in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland, with his wife and first two children. Also residing with him was his brother Donald. John was employed as a agricultural labourer. (Ancestry incorrectly transcribes their location as “Frombuy”. No such place has been found in Aberfoyle parish on any map. It is most likely a transcription error for Drumbuy.)

In 1861, at age 42, John Stewart was residing at Arrochybeg in Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland, with his wife and 8 children. He was employed as a shepherd.

In 1871, at age 51, John Stewart was residing at Duchruin in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, with only his wife and youngest son, Alexander. John was employed as a shepherd.

In 1881, at age 66, John Stewart was residing at Tarnduin Cottage on the Trossachs Road in Callander parish, Perthshire, Scotland, with his wife. He was employed as a shepher. Also residing with them was their 4-year-old niece Jane McGregor, born Stirling, Stirling.

In 1891, at age 72, John Stewart was residing at Easter Torrie, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, in the home of his eldest son, John Stewart. John Sr.’s age is incorrectly transcribed as 32 at Ancestry.

John’s death record gives his parents’ names as John Stewart and Margaret McIntyre and gives his age at death as 79 in 1894.

John Stewart married on 21 Jan 1846 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Elizabeth McCallum. They had the following children:

On 7 Dec 1903, John Stewart was residing at Gartchurrachan by Balfron, Balfron, Stirlingshire, Scotland, when he was named as executor to the premature death of his brother Walter Stewart. “STEWART, Walter, Shepherd, Auchadunan near Inveraray, was found dead 7 March 1903, at Inch of Ferryton Farm near Clackmannan, intestate. They were students attending school. The census index does not indicate who they were living with. As minors they must have been living with a relative. The full census image will need to be consulted to identify their guardian.

In 1881, at age 25, Donald Stewart was residing at Easter Torrie, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland in the home of his oldest brother John. He was employed as farmer’s partner. Also residing with them was his sister Margaret (21) and their uncle Donald Stewart (70).

Walter Stewart died 7 Mar 1903 from exposure face-down in a ditch near Loneside Farm, Clackmannan, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. He was employed as a shepherd at Auchadunan near Inverary, Argyleshire, Scotland, at the time.

Reading between the lines, it would appear that Walter may have been a deadbeat and a drunk who spent most of his life unemployed or working as a farm labourer got a maidservant pregnant twice, and died face down in a ditch, presumably drunk.

“STEWART, Walter, Shepherd, Auchadunan near Inveraray, was found dead 7 March 1903, at Inch of Ferryton Farm near Clackmannan, intestate. The second line of descent from the Stewarts allegedly in Glentarken is described in Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, as follows:

James Stewart, [a] tacksman [in] Auchnahard [in] Glenfinglas. [He] left four sons:

    1. 1 son Alexander Stewart, [a] shepherd [at] Inverchearnaig [in the] Braes of Balquhidder, [which is] a part of the ancient estate of Macgregor of Glencearnaig, [but] now [belongs to] the Earl of Murray. [He holds] a copartner lease of the Stewarts or Bans of Glenfinglas. [He] has five sons: Duncan, James, Robert, David, and John
      1. Duncan (of whom no description is given)
      2. James is a Shepherd in Gleneilg
      3. Robert a servant man to Mr Robert Steward [in] Auchnahard [in] Glenfinglas
      4. John is shepherd to Duncan Stewart [in] Duart [in] Glenfinglas at the farm of Duilatur [in] Port [of Menteith] parish
      5. David [is] with John Stewart [in] Stroin [on] Lochcathrineside
    2. 2 son David Stewart [is a] Lotter [in] Auchraw [on] Lochearnside [on] Breadalbane’s estate. [He is] brother to [the] foresaid Alexander.  [David] has four sons [who are] minors
    3. 3 son Robert Stewart, [is a] shepherd to one Mr Fergusson [in] Glenfearnate [on the] Duke of Atholl’s estate [in] Kirk Michael’s parish [in] Perthshire. [He has] two sons.
    4. 4 James Stewart, [who is] brother to the above. [He is a] tacksman of Greenhill [in] Dollar parish [in] Clackmannanshire. [He has] six daughters and no son, which is a pity as a better heart was never tempered in fire.

This finishes [the] Glentarkin Stewarts.

While Stewarts of the South describes the patriarch of this family, James Stewart, as residing in Auchnahard, parish records show his residence as nearby Ardcheanochdan at the time that he was having children from 1754-1759. If the author of Stewarts of the South is correct then it would seem most likely that James Stewart moved to Auchnahard after 1759. James Stewart, in Ardcheanochdan & Auchnahard, would be a cousin of some degree to Walter Clachain Stewart of 1-Line, above. Our present working theory is that they were first-cousins, sharing a common grandfather who may have resided in Glen Tarken in the 17th century.

James Stewart in Ardcheanochdan & Auchnahard

James Stewart, in Ardcheanochdan & Auchnahard, b. Abt 1730, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. UNKNOWN

James Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1730 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, or possibly Balquhidder or Comrie parishes, to unknown parents.

James Stewart is identified in Stewarts of the South, Section II, as being the patriarch of 2-Line of the Stewarts in Glentarken (VIII-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie). He is described as shown above. James Stewart was a cousin of uncertain degree to Walter Clachain Stewart of 1-Line, shown above.

James Stewart married on 29 Jul 1754 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, to Jean Stewart. “1754 James Stewart and Jean Stewart both in this Paroch listed themselves to be Proclaimed in order to marriage 25th and were married 29th July.” (Callander Parish Register). Jean Stewart is suspected to belong to the Bain Stewarts in Glen Finglas who resided at Auchnahard.

Their first child, Alexander, was born three months after their marriage.

They had five sons — the four listed in Stewarts of the South and an additional son, Duncan, who is identified in parish baptismal records and who is presumed to have died young.

Robert Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1762 probably at Auchnahard in Glen Finglas in Callander parish, Perthshire, Scotland as a son of James Stewart and Jean Stewart although no record of his birth has been found.

Robert Stewart is listed in Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, as a younger son of James Stewart in Auchnahard, patriarch of 2-Line of the Stewarts in Glentarken (VIII-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie). He is described as:

“3 son Robert Stewart, [is a] shepherd to one Mr Fergusson [in] Glenfearnate [on the] Duke of Atholl’s estate [in] Kirk Michael’s parish [in] Perthshire. [He has] two sons.”

Robert Stewart married on 26 Feb 1802 in Lethendy and Kinloch parish, in eastern Perthshire, Scotland to Anne Kennedy. They had five children.

James Stewart, in Greenhill,   b. Abt 1765, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN.

James Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1765 probably at Auchnahard in Glen Finglas in Callander parish, Perthshire, Scotland as a son of James Stewart and Jean Stewart although no record of his birth has been found.

James Stewart is listed in Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, as youngest son of James Stewart in Auchnahard, patriarch of 2-Line of the Stewarts in Glentarken (VIII-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie). He is described as:

“James Stewart, [who is] brother to the above. [He is a] tacksman of Greenhill [in] Dollar parish [in] Clackmannanshire. [He has] six daughters and no son, which is a pity as a better heart was never tempered in fire.”

This is probably the only mention of daughters in all of Stewarts of the South. When the author said that James had “six daughters and no son” he author meant that James has six surviving daughters and no surviving sons. James and Jean had ten documented children (and likely one more whose baptism record has not survived) including four sons who must have died young if the entry in Stewarts of the South is correct, which it likely is as it would explain why the author made the point of mentioning daughters in this case.

James Stewart married on 13 Jan 1792 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, to Margery Campbell. Their marriage was registered secondly on 14 Jan 1792 in Margery’s home parish of Killin, Perthshire, Scotland. “1792 Janry 13th James Stewart in this parish and Madge Campbell in the parish of Kilin were contracted. Dues 2 sh.” (Balquhidder Parish Register)

James and Margery began their family in Wester Auchtow, just east of the Kirkton of Balquhidder in Balquhidder parish. About 1806 they moved to Glenfernate in Moulin parish in eastern Perthshire where his brother Robert was a shepherd.

James must have been prosperous in his endeavours as sometime before 1812 he moved his family to Dollar parish in Clackmannanshire, Scotland where he was able to purchase a tack for the farm of Greenhill.

James’ date of death is unknown.

Alexander Stewart, Shepherd in Invercarnaig

Alexander Stewart, Shepherd in Invercarnaig,   b. 31 Oct 1754, Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN

(Alexander Stewart’s family shown here was previously incorrectly identified as the family of Dr. Alexander Stewart in Bo’ness from the Stewarts of Glen Ogle.)

Alexander Stewart was born 31 Oct 1754 in Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of James Stewart and Jean Stewart.

Alexander Stewart is identified in Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, as being a son of James Stewart in Auchnahard from 2-Line of the Stewarts in Glentarken. Alexander is described as:

“son Alexander Stewart, [a] shepherd [at] Inverchearnaig [in the] Braes of Balquhidder, [which is] a part of the ancient estate of Macgregor of Glencearnaig, [but] now [belongs to] the Earl of Murray. [He holds] a copartner lease of the Stewarts or Bans (Bains) of Glenfinglas. [He] has five sons: Duncan, James, Robert, David, and John:

1. Duncan (of whom no description is given)
2 James is a Shepherd in Gleneilg
3 Robert a servant man to Mr Robert Steward [in] Auchnahard [in] Glenfinglas
4 John is shepherd to Duncan Stewart [in] Duart [in] Glenfinglas at the farm of Duilatur [in] Port [of Menteith] parish
5 David [is] with John Stewart [in] Stroin [on] Lochcathrineside.”

The reference to Alexander holding a copartner lease with the Bain Stewarts of Glenfinglas likely refers to a sublease of part of the Auchnahard farm where his father is said to have resided. As such, it seems likely that his mother, Jean Stewart, belonged to the Bain Stewarts in Auchnahard, although her exact birth has not been identified.

Alexander Stewart’s marriage banns were registered on 17 Dec 1791 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Elisabeth Stewart, daughter of James Stewart and Agnes McCallum. Their marriage was registered secondly on 30 Dec 1791 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. “1791 – Decr 17th Alexr. Stewart in this parish and Elisabeth Stewart in the parish of Callander. Dues 2 sh.” (Balquhidder Parish Register) “1791, Alexander Stewart in the parish of Balquhidder and Elizabeth Stewart in this parish enlisted December 18th and married 30th December 1791.” (Callander Parish Register)

Alexander Stewart’s wife, Elisabeth Stewart was born in Corriechrombie to James Stewart and Agnes Malcolm/McCallum. Her family’s origins have not been identified.

Alexander Stewart and Elisabeth Stewart had nine children together in Inverlochlarig Mor in the wester Braes of Balquhidder.

Although Alexander Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as a shepherd at Invercarnaig, his children were all born at nearby Inverlochlarig, suggesting that Alexander lived at Inverlochlarig but worked 2 km away at Invercarnaig. Inverlochlarig is famous for being the residence of Rob Roy MacGregor.

Alexander Stewart’s date and place of death is unknown. No record of his death or burial has been found.

Marriage and Children

Alexander Stewart married on 17 Dec 1791 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Elisabeth Stewart.

Duncan Stewart was born 21 Apr 1794 in Inverlochlarig Mor, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of Alexander Stewart and Elisabeth Stewart.

Duncan Stewart is listed in Stewarts of the South Section II, c. 1815, as a son of Alexander Stewart, a shepherd in Invercarnaig, who was a son of James Stewart in Auchnahard. They are identified as belonging to the Stewarts in Glentarken (VIII-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie). No description of Duncan is given beyond his name.

Duncan Stewart married on 11 Jun 1825 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, to Elizabeth McNeil. They had three children.

In 1841, at age 45, Duncan Stewart was residing in Stank in Strathyre, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, with his wife and daughter Janet.

Duncan Stewart died sometime between 1841-1851.

By 1851, Duncan’s brother James had taken over the farm in Stank.

In 1851 Duncan’s daughter Elisa is found residing in Stank with her uncle James Stewart. Elisa is shown as being born in Dalgety, Fife, Scotland, confirming that the Dalgety and Balquhidder births for the children shown here do indeed belong to the same family. Dalgety is believed to have been one of the properties of the Earl of Murray which may indicate that Duncan was employed by the Earl.

John Stewart was born 20 Mar 1795 in Inverlochlarig Mor, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of Alexander Stewart and Elisabeth Stewart.

John Stewart is identified in Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, as a son of Alexander Stewart, a shepherd in Invercarnaig, who was a son of James Stewart in Auchnahard. They are identified as belonging to the Stewarts in Glentarken (VIII-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie). John is described as:

James Stewart was born 4 Dec 1797 in Inverlochlarig Mor, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of Alexander Stewart and Elisabeth Stewart.

James Stewart is identified in Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, as a son of Alexander Stewart, a shepherd in Invercarnaig, who was a son of James Stewart in Auchnahard. They are identified as belonging to the Stewarts in Glentarken (VIII-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie). James is described as:

“2 James is a Shepherd in Gleneilg.”

Glenelg was a parish in Argyleshire on the coast facing the Isle of Skye.

James Stewart has not been found in the 1841 census. He was likely in Glen Elg although no record of him has been found in Argyleshire in 1841.

Sometime between 1841-1851, James eldest brother, Duncan, died in Stank in Strathyre, B. James then took over the Stank farm as the next oldest brother.

In 1851, at age 52, James Stewart was residing at Stank in Strathyre, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as a bachelor, with his adult siblings, Ann, David, and Archibald. James was employed as a farmer of 40 Acres employing 5 labourers. Also residing with them were nieces Elisa, age 19, born 1832 in Dalgetty, Fifeshire (Duncan’s daughter) and Ann, age 4, born 1847 in Callander (no matching birth record has been found). (No birth has been found for Archibald and he has not been found in any other census. He may have been a brother-in-law.)

In 1861, at age 63, James Stewart was residing at Stank in Strathyre, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland as a bachelor with his sister Ann and brother David, as well as nieces Catharine and Ann (whose parents have not been identified). James was employed as a farmer.

In 1871, at age 73, James Stewart was residing at Stank in Strathyre, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland as a bachelor with his sister Anne and brother David, as well as niece Ann Stewart (whose parents have not been identified). James was employed as a farmer of 4 acres, of which 4 were arable, employing 5 men.

James Stewart has not been found in the 1881 census and is presumed to have died between 1871-1881, although no record of his death or burial has been found.

Robert Stewart, Servant in Auchnahard, b. 13 Feb 1800, Inverlochlarig Mor, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location, d. UNKNOWN.

Robert Stewart was born 13 Feb 1800 in Inverlochlarig Mor, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of Alexander Stewart and Elisabeth Stewart. However, his baptism record mistakenly records his mother’s name as Janet. “1800 – Feby 13th Alexr Stewart in Innerlochlarigmor and his wife Janet Stewart had a child baptd and named Robert.” (Balquhidder Parish Register). For the seven other baptisms for children of Alexander Stewart in Inverlochlarig Mor, the mother’s name is recorded as Elisabeth. Just four weeks prior the following baptism was recorded: “1800, Jany 12th, Alexander Stewart and Janet Stewart his wife in Carnlia had a child baptd and named Robert.” The parish clerk appears to have confused the two families.

Robert Stewart is identified in Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, as a son of Alexander Stewart, a shepherd in Invercarnaig, who was a son of James Stewart in Auchnahard. They are identified as belonging to the Stewarts in Glentarken (VIII-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie). Robert is described as:

“Robert a servant man to Mr Robert Steward [in] Auchnahard [in] Glenfinglas.”

In 1841, at age 35, Robert Stewart was residing in Stank in Strathyre, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, in the home of his eldest brother, Duncan. His siblings David and Ann were also residing with them.

David Stewart in Auchraw

David Stewart, in Auchraw,   b. 10 Oct 1759, Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN

David Stewart was born 10 Oct 1759 in Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of James Stewart in Ardcheanochdan and Auchnahard and Jean Stewart, shown further above.

David is identified in Stewarts of the South, Section II, c. 1815, as belonging to 2-Line of the Stewarts in Glentarken (VIII-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie). He is described as:

“son David Stewart [is a] Lotter [in] Auchraw [on] Lochearnside [on] Breadalbane’s estate. [He is] brother to [the] foresaid Alexander. [David] has four sons [who are] minors”

According to the death record of David’s son, Alexander, David Stewart was a lint miller.

David Stewart married on 19 Jun 1803 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, to Agnes/Ann Stewart. This marriage was deemed “clandestine” and the couple were fined by the parish of Balquhidder for holding a marriage outside of the church. The marriage registration indicates that David Stewart came from Callander parish and Agnes (Ann) Stewart came from Balquhidder parish.

There are no baptisms for children of David and Agnes Stewart listed in Balquhidder or Callander until 1812. There are only the four baptisms for children of David and Ann Stewart in Achra, shown here. This leaves a potential nine-year gap between the date of their marriage and the date of their first documented child’s birth registration. This fits the description in Stewarts of the South of them having four sons. Thus, we are missing the baptisms of two sons, one of which we can presume was named James.

It’s noteworthy that Anglican baptisms were not recorded in Callander for this time period. Being Anglican is the most likely reason for their marriage being deemed clandestine and the most likely reason for the missing baptisms.
