Branch IX – Sliochd Gleanmagaolric

The Stewarts of Sliochd Gleanmagaolric were a cadet branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie.  Please refer to the Glenbuckie page for a full introduction.

In Dallanlaggan (Ballimore)

The next branch of the family of Glenbuckie is a branch known as Sliochd Gleanmagaolric.  The  meaning of this name is uncertain and our best guess is Gleann Magh Geal Riabhach (pronounced “glen-mah-gill-ree(a)chk” with the “(a)” only slightly voiced, and the “ch” is, of course, horked) which means “Valley of the Brindled White Field.”  We have been unable to locate any glen with a name that’s even close, so, at present, we have no idea what the name of this branch refers to.

Later in the text, the author refers to the glen as Glengaolric, without the ‘ma’. Nearby Glengyle was often written as Glengaol in old records. It could be a reference to Glengyle, just west of Glen Finglas.

The primary initial residence for Branch IX of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie appears to have been Dallanlaggan which is located in mid Glen Buckie.  Dallanlaggan means “dale of the little hollow”.  By the mid-18th century Dallanlaggan was also being called Ballimore, which means “big house”.  Dallanlaggan was the earlier name.  Presumably sometime in the 18th century a “big house” was built at Dallanlaggan and thus the residence began to be called Ballimore.

This branch is described in Stewarts of the South as:

Duncan (Og) Stewart, tenant in Glenbuckie [in] Balquhidder Parish and [on] Capt Stewart’s property, had three sons, [namely]

1. Duncan Stewart, tenant [in] Lianach [of] Glenbuckie. This Duncan had three sons, [namely]:
   1. Duncan, [who was] sometime ago at Doune, who also left three [sons], [namely]
      1. Duncan, [a] shepherd with the Earl of Murray at Doune Lodge, a good character in his own station
      2. David, a student of Divinity [and] a profound scholar
      3. Donald, a shepherd in Campsie Parish [in] Stirlingshire

      All [three sons are] unmarried.
      (The second and third sons of Duncan, son of Duncan, were omitted at this point in the text and are picked up by the author at a later point, below.  That later entry has been moved forward to this point where it belongs in order to improve readability.)

   2. The second was Donald, a moss laird in Summerline, Flanders Moss [on] Blair Drummond’s property, who has no family
   3. Alexander, the youngest brother, who superintends Blair Drummond’s cattle, and has four sons [who are] under age
2. John, son of Duncan og, commonly called “Ian McDonachie”, the decentest tenant that was in Balquhidder when I frequented that place first – he was tacksman of Achlaskin (Auchleskine), part of the property of Sir John Murray-MaGregor in Balquidder.  [He] left three sons [who are] all dead, except one:
   1. Duncan, who is what they call a Moss-Laird, in Summerline, Flanders moss [on] Blair Drummond’s property, who has four sons [who are] all under age.  This Duncan was a real profligate and reduced himself and his father’s family to perfect slavery in that place.
3. There was another son of Duncan og, called James, formerly tenant in Ardchechnacnocan [in] Callander parish, part of Burrel Drummond’s estate, who left three sons, [namely]
   1. Angus, who emigrated to North America, and who had three sons
   2. Duncan, a moss-laird in Erskine of Cardross’ estate in Port [of Menteith] parish, Perth county, who has three sons [who are all] under age
   3. Patrick, another son of James crofter in Soldiers’ land near Callander, also [has] three sons [who are] under age.

NB I forgot to mention the three sons of the second Duncan Stewart… (the remainder of this entry has been moved earlier to its proper place in the chronology in order to improve readability.)

This finishes the genealogy of Sliochd Glengaolric.

Though the cultivation of the moss is a real bondage, yet voluntary, however old Blair Drummond makes it as easy as possible, and is quite different from his son, who is as smooth as sweet oil; and would make everything a crime. He is indeed very like unto Squire Bramble in Humphrey Clinker or Allworthy in Tom Jones. The old man is, really, in my opinion as good a character as can be.

Unfortunately Stewarts of the South gives us no indication as to how this family grafts onto the main trunk of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie.  It only says that they are descended from the Stewarts of Glenbuckie.  The earliest identifiable ancestor of this branch is “Old Duncan” Stewart (or “Sean Duncan” Stewart in Gaelic) as we have identified him below.  He was likely born sometime around 1670, probably in Balquhidder parish, and probably at Dallanlaggan, where it is suspected his family probably resided from their conception.  We may never be able to figure out just how this branch descends from the Stewarts of Glenbuckie without further information coming to light but the most likely persons from whom Old Duncan Stewart in Dallanlaggan might descend would be:

1. A younger one of the 11 illegitimate sons of Patrick Stewart, 2nd of Glenbuckie, all born in the early 1500s and living at Dallanlaggan. (4 generation gap to Sean Duncan Stewart in Dallanlaggan)
2. Duncan Stewart, son of Patrick Stewart, 1st of Ledcreich, b. ca. 1605 in Ledcreich. (2 generation gap to Sean Duncan Stewart in Dallanlaggan)
3. Duncan McWilliam Stewart, b. ca. 1640 in Ledcreich, son of William Stewart, 2nd of Ledcreich. (could be Sean Duncan’s father.)

We presently prefer the first option.  Branch VIII and Branch X are both said to descend from earlier illegitimate branches.  Branch X specifies its descent from one of the eleven illegitimate sons of Patrick Stewart, 2nd of Glenbuckie. It’s likely that Branch VIII descends from one of Patrick’s elder illegitimate sons.  As such it would seem most likely that Branch IX descends from one of Patrick’s middle illegitimate sons.  Patrick Stewart, 2nd of Glenbuckie, lived and had sons during the mid-16th century.  As such there is likely at least 100-130 years of intervening generations missing; probably 4-6 generations.

Sean Duncan Stewart in Dallanlaggan

“Old Duncan”

Sean Duncan STEWART b: ABT 1670 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.  Duncan’s parents are unknown.  It is suggested that he most likely descends from one of the younger illegitimate sons of Patrick Stewart, 2nd of Glenbuckie.  This Duncan Stewart’s name is inferred from his son’s reference in Stewarts of the South, in which his son is referred to as “Duncan Og Stewart.” “Og” is Gaelic for “young” which implies that Duncan Og Stewart was the son of an “Old Duncan” Stewart. Thus this Duncan is named “Sean Duncan” which means “Old Duncan”. “Sean” is not a personal name here (i.e. “Shawn”) but is the Gaelic word for “old” (pronounced “shen”).

Sean Duncan’s son, Duncan Og, is recorded in Stewarts of the South as being the patriarch of Branch IX of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie and as descending from the family of Glenbuckie by unknown means.

Sean Duncan’s wife is unknown.  He was the father of:

1. Duncan Og STEWART in Glenbuckie b: ABT 1700 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.  According to Stewarts of the South, “Duncan (Og) Stewart, tenant in Glenbuckie [in] Balquhidder Parish and [on] Capt Stewart’s property, had three sons [namely] Duncan, John and James.” Duncan’s nickname “Og” means “young” in Gaelic. It likely indicates that his father’s name was also Duncan. His father is shown here as Sean Duncan Stewart (meaning “Old Duncan Stewart”).  Duncan’s wife is unknown.  He was the father of:
   1. Duncan (or Patrick?) STEWART in Lianach b: ABT 1725 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. 
      1. Duncan’s descendants are presented below as Line 1.
   2. John McDonachie STEWART b: ABT 1730 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.
      1. John’s descendants are presented below as Line 2.
   3. James STEWART in Ardcheanochdan b: ABT 1740 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. 
      1. James’ descendants are presented below as Line 3.

Stewarts of the South does not break-down the descendants of this family into various lines, however, for easier readability we have broken this branch into three descendant lines headed by the three sons of Duncan Og Stewart.

Line 1 – Duncan Stewart in Lianach

Duncan (or Patrick?) STEWART in Lianach b: ABT 1725 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.  Duncan Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as “Duncan (sic?) Stewart, tenant [in] Lianach [of] Glenbuckie. This Duncan had three sons, [namely]: Duncan, Donald and Alexander.”  Duncan’s name may be incorrect in Stewarts of the South.  As Duncan’s sons both had eldest sons named Peter then this Duncan’s name may be incorrectly recorded in Stewarts of the South and may actually be Peter/Patrick.  Duncan’s wife is unknown.  He was the father of:

1. Duncan STEWART b: ABT 1755 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.  Duncan Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as: “Duncan, [who was] sometime ago at Doune, who also left three [sons], [namely] Duncan, David, and Donald.”  Duncan married on 22 MAR 1784 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet STEWART b: 10 MAR 1752 in Larg, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of Duncan Stewart in Lurg and Ardcheanochdan and Agnes Stewart. (This family matches identically with Ardvorlich III, Line 2. More research is needed to confirm which family is correctly accounted for.)
   1. Peter STEWART b: 18 MAY 1785 in Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Peter is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South and is presumed to have died young.
   2. Duncan STEWART b: 20 MAR 1787 in Easter Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Duncan Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as: “Duncan, [a] shepherd with the Earl of Murray at Doune Lodge, a good character in his own station.” He is later described as being unmarried (ca. 1815.)
   3. John STEWART b: 12 APR 1788 in Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  John is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South and is presumed to have died young.
   4. James STEWART b: 23 APR 1790 in Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  James is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South and is presumed to have died young.
   5. Anne STEWART b: 30 MAR 1792 in Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Anne is found in 1841 and 1851 unmarried and residing with her brother David. She is presumed to have never married.
   6. Donald STEWART b: 26 AUG 1795 in Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Donald is described in Stewarts of the South as: “Donald, a shepherd in Campsie Parish [in] Stirlingshire.”
   7. Rev. David STEWART Minister of Ardnamurchan b: 27 FEB 1798 in Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  David is described in Stewarts of the South as: “David, a student of Divinity [and] a profound scholar.” David is described in the Fasti Ecclesia for Ardnamurchan parish in Argyll as: “DAVID STEWART, born Kilmadock, Perthshire, 1799, sixth son of Duncan S., farmer; educated at Univ. of Glasgow ; M.A. (1819) ; licen. by Presb. of Glasgow 9th June 1824 ; ord. to Kinloch-spelvie 11th Sept. 1828; trans, and adm. 25th April 1844 ; found dead in bed 8th May 1860. He was a man of original character and of mark in the country, prepossessing in his personal appearance, a scholar, a theologian, and esteemed for gentleness of disposition combined with firmness of principle. He erected at his own expense a commodious chapel and schoolhouse about eight miles distant from the parish church.” In 1851 David was residing in Manse Kilchoan, Ardnamurchan, Argyll, Scotland with his sister Anne Stewart b 1803 in Callander and an 11 yr old Anne Stewart b 1840 in Ardnamurchan shown as a house servant.
2. Donald STEWART in Summerline b: ABT 1758 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.  Donald Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as: “Donald, a moss laird in Summerline, Flanders Moss [on] Blair Drummond’s property, who has no family.” There are only two Donald Stewarts listed in the 1814 Moss Census neither of which come close to this description. It’s possible that Stewarts of the South may have Donald’s first name incorrect.
3. Alexander STEWART b: ABT 1760 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.  Alexander Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as: “Alexander, the youngest brother, who superintends Blair Drummond’s cattle, and has four sons [who are] under age.” The family shown here belongs to an Alexander Stewart who resided at “Barns” on the Blair Drummond Estate. “Barns” may be a reference to the cattle barn. The residence of “Barns” would not be a reference to living “in the barn” but may refer to a servant’s quarters associated with the barn. His children match the description presented in Stewarts of the South but this family is not confirmed. Alexander Stewart resided on The Moss at the time of his marriage to Cirsty McNaughtan.  Alexander married on 7 JAN 1797 in Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland to Christian MCNAUGHTAN b: ABT 1770 in Perthshire, Scotland.  Christian’s birth family has not been confidently identified, but she may be the sister of Peter McNaughton at Kirkline on Blair Drummond Moss who later immigrated to Puslinch, Ontario, Canada.  Alexander and Christian had the following children:
   1. Margaret STEWART b: ABT 26 NOV 1797 in Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland.  Margaret’s exact place of birth is not recorded in the Kincardine OPR however her parents were recorded in the OPR at the time of their marriage as residing on the Moss and at the baptism of their son John in 1806 they are recorded as residing on the Moss. As such it is presumed that they were residing on the Moss for the intervening years also.
   2. Helen STEWART b: ABT 21 JUL 1799 in Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland.  Helen’s exact place of birth is not recorded in the Kincardine OPR however her parents were recorded in the OPR at the time of their marriage as residing on the Moss and at the baptism of their son John in 1806 they are recorded as residing on the Moss. As such it is presumed that they were residing on the Moss for the intervening years also.
   3. Peter STEWART b: ABT 26 JUL 1801 in Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland.  Peter’s exact place of birth is not recorded in the Kincardine OPR however his parents were recorded in the OPR at the time of their marriage as residing on the Moss and at the baptism of their son John in 1806 they are recorded as residing on the Moss. As such it is presumed that they were residing on the Moss for the intervening years also. Peter is described in Stewarts of the South as an underage son. He may be the Peter Stewart, b 1803, residing in 1841 at Blair Drummond Farm employed as an agricultural labourer with the family shown here. All four of his children were residing at home. In 1851 Peter is found at “Blair Drummond Farm” working as a field labourer. His wife and daughter Helen are at home with him. The remaining children have not been found in Scotland in 1851.  Peter is believed to have married on 18 NOV 1827 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland to Jean MILLAR b: 1801 in Dunblane, Perthshire, Scotland.  They had the following children:
      1. Alexander STEWART b: 12 SEP 1828 in Blair Drummond, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland
      2. Margaret STEWART b: 14 FEB 1831 in Blair Drummond, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland
      3. George Drummond STEWART b: 31 DEC 1833 in Blair Drummond, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland
      4. Helen STEWART b: 13 JUN 1836 in Blair Drummond, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland
   4. Mary STEWART b: ABT 26 FEB 1804 in Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland.  Mary’s exact place of birth is not recorded in the Kincardine OPR however her parents were recorded in the OPR at the time of their marriage as residing on the Moss and at the baptism of their son John in 1806 they are recorded as residing on the Moss.    5. John STEWART b: ABT 01 JUN 1806 in Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland.  John is described in Stewarts of the South as an underage son.
   6. Alexander STEWART b: ABT 06 MAR 1808 in Barns, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland.  Alexander is described in Stewarts of the South as an underage son.
   7. Christian STEWART b: ABT 12 APR 1812 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland

James Stewart in Westwood Lane, Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine-by-Doune, Perthshire, Scotland

James 1803 in Westwood Lane, b: ABT 06 Mar 1803 in Auchleskine, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. James was a son of Duncan Stewart in Auchleskine and Summerline, shown above. James Stewart in Westwood Lane.  married on 1832 Octr 9 in Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret Scott; James in the Parish of Kincardine and Margaret Scott in the Parish of Alloa.

James appears to have prospered better than his “profligate” father, Duncan, who squandered his own father’s wealth and reduced his entire family to poverty as subtenants on the Blair Drummond Moss, unable to even afford a lease of their own. James did the opposite. He seems to have raised himself out of poverty enough to at least be able to afford his own Moss lease and eventually even afford to hire a couple of servants.

In 1851, at age 46, James Stewart was residing at Westwood Lane on the Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland, with his wife and children. He was employed as a farmer of 26 acres.

In 1861, at age 57, James Stewart was residing at Westwood Lane on the Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland, with his wife and children. He was employed as a farmer of 31 acres, employing two labourers.

In 1871, at age 68, James Stewart was residing at 2 Westwood Lane on the Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland, with his wife, daughter Elisabeth, and two grandchildren, Damon Stewart and James Muir. He was employed as a farmer of 31 acres, employing one boy, Francis O’Brien, age 16.

John Scott Stuart, b 1838 in Stirlingshire, moved to Australia in the 1860s. d 19 Jul 1911 in Aus, age 73, born Stirling, married Catherine Pollock in Aus and had 12 children. Death certificate verifies him as son of James Stewart and Margaret Scott. Likely connected to James on the Moss by census and birth records yet to be reviewed.

Line 3 – James Stewart in Ardcheanochdan

James STEWART in Ardcheanochdan b: ABT 1740 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.  James Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as: “There was another son of Duncan og, called James, formerly tenant in Ardchechnacnocan [in] Callander parish, part of Burrel Drummond’s estate, who left three sons, [namely] Angus, Duncan, and Patrick.”  The births of Angus and Duncan are easily identifiable in parish records, however no record has been found for Patrick’s birth.  James married on 10 NOV 1767 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet MCDONALD b: ABT 1745 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland.  She is suspected to be related to the family of Archibald McDonald of Monachyle and may even be Archibald’s sister.  The name Angus is native to the McDonalds of Monachyle but among the Stewarts of Balquhidder it is only found in the following family.  James and Janet had the following children:

1. Margaret STEWART b: ABT 30 JAN 1769 in Dallanlaggan of Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
2. Duncan STEWART b: ABT 10 AUG 1771 in Balmenoch of Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.  Duncan Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as: “Duncan, a moss-laird in Erskine of Cardross’ estate in Port [of Menteith] parish, Perth county, who has three sons [who are all] under age.” 
   1. Duncan’s children have not been identified.
3. Catharine STEWART b: ABT 20 MAR 1774 in Dallanlaggan of Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
4. John STEWART b: 23 AUG 1776 in Wester Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  John is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South and is presumed to have died young.
5. Angus STEWART b: 21 MAR 1779 in Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  Angus Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as: “Angus, who emigrated to North America, and who had three sons.”  Angus and his family had resided in Port of Menteith before emigrating to Quebec in 1828. They later relocated to Mosa Township, Middlesex County, Upper Canada in 1835.  Angus married on 15 JAN 1809 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland to Catherine MCKERRACHER b: 07 JUL 1787 in Perth, Scotland.  Her birth family has not been identified. 
   1. Their descendants are presented further below.

James had the following child by an unknown mother:

1. Patrick STEWART b: ABT 1765 in Dallanlaggan of Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.  No record has been found of Patrick’s birth.  Patrick Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as: “Patrick, another son of James crofter in Soldiers’ land near Callander, also [has] three sons [who are] under age.”  Patrick married on 1 JAN 1803 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Agnes FERGUSON, b ABT 1780 in Scotland.  They had the following children:
   1. John STEWART b: ABT 16 OCT 1803 in Immereoin, Balquhidder, Perth, Scotland
   2. Christian STEWART b: ABT 14 MAR 1805 in Immereoin, Balquhidder, Perth, Scotland
   3. Robert STEWART b: ABT 25 JUN 1809 in Immerioch, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
   4. Janet STEWART b: 02 OCT 1810 in Woodend of Kilmahog, Callander Perthshire, Scotland
   5. Duncan STEWART b: 29 SEP 1815 in Kilmahog, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
   6. James STEWART b: 18 SEP 1819 in Soldier’s Settlement, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  James birth is recorded as “James Ferguson, son of Peter Ferguson and Anne Stewart in Soldier’s Settlement.” There are no other births to a couple named Peter Ferguson and Anne Stewart, nor any marriage for such a couple in the parish or nearby. Thus it is suggested that the parish clerk made an error and reversed the surnames of the parents, and that this birth should be “James Stewart, son of Peter Stewart and Anne Ferguson.”There are only two Peter Stewarts in Callander parish having children at this time. The other Peter has been accounted for elsewhere and if this James Ferguson is really James Stewart, as suggested, then this family is a perfect match for the description in Stewarts of the South. It would appear that James’ parents moved to Soldier’s Land immediately after Duncan’s birth and that James was born after the writing of Stewarts of the South.

The following family is an excellent candidate to be “Sean Duncan Stewart” above. However, at this time we have insufficient evidence to be sure of the connection. The fact that Duncan below does not have a son named Duncan is noted, but it’s possible that there are children missing below. Duncan and Margaret could easily have had a son in 1727 who was not recorded who could have been named Duncan.

There is an Angus STEWART, b abt 1805 in Callander whose first child was born in Letter in Strathgartney.  There is no record of any Angus Stewart in the Callander parish records born at that time.  Angus married Janet Stewart, daughter of Duncan Stewart in Breanachoile and Letter (born in Ardcheanochdan), son of Robert MacDonnachaidh Stewart of the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran Branch III – Slioch Rob Diubh Mhor.  Angus is not a name that is native to the Stewarts of Balquhidder.  In fact, of the 3000+ Balquhidder Stewarts we now have indexed, Angus Stewart b 1779 in Ardcheanochdan, shown above, represents the only Angus Stewart we have documented as being descended from the Stewarts of Balquhidder.  As Ardcheanochdan and Breanachoile are adjacent properties then it seems likely that Angus Stewart 1805 is from Sliochd Gleanmagaolric, however we have no record of him nor any clear idea how he might attach.  The fact that Angus’ eldest son is named John makes it tempting to suggest that Angus could be the son of John Stewart 1776 above (brother of Angus Stewart 1779), however said John Stewart is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South and is shown above as being presumed to have died in childhood. 

Angus’ family may be from Archibald Stewart from Glen Lyon.

Jannet’s brother is found in 1851 and 1861 with a nephew Robert and niece Jean both born in Edinburgh and matching the children shown here. Furthmore the onomastics for Angus’ and Jannet’s children match perfectly with the parents shown here and their first child was born in Letter, which was Jannet’s father’s property.  It is believed that this family is the same one found in 1881 on Lot 59, Kings County, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Jannet’s uncles, David and Robert Stewart were heavily involved in the settling of Prince Edward Island.  It is suggested that Jannet married on 29 SEP 1827 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Angus STEWART b: ABT 1805 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.  They are believed to have had the following children:
