In 1739, Janet Stewart is not found in the Buchanan Parish Examination Roll as residing at Lagganmuir on the Arrachie estate with her mother and siblings. Her whereabouts in 1739 is unknown. She would have been 10 years old so may have been staying with relatives elsewhere.

Janet Stewart is believed to have married about 1758 in Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland to Duncan McFarlane,   b. Abt 1720, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland ,   d. Between 1759 and 1763, Lagganeurgh, Arrachie, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland   (Age 39 years).

Janet Stewart next appears in records in the 1759 Buchanan Parish Examination Roll residing at Lagganeurgh on the Arrachie estate with Duncan McFarlane. It appears that she is Duncan’s wife although no record of their marriage has been found. Also residing with them are Peter McAlpine, Christian Campbell, Margaret Stewart, Catherine Stewart. As ages are not given, it is impossible to determine how old Margaret Stewart and Catherine Stewart are or what their relationship is to Janet Stewart. Given Janet’s age, they could be illegitmate daughters or unidentified relatives.

There is no record of Duncan McFarlane and Janet Stewart having any children.

She is believed to be the Janet Stewart who married secondly on 9 Jul 1763 in Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland, to John McFarlane,   b. Abt 1730, Stirlingshire, Scotland ,   d. UNKNOWN.

No further record has been found of Janet Stewart. Her later whereabouts is unknown.

Alexander Stewart,   b. 23 Sep 1729, Inchfad, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland ,   d. UNKNOWN

Alexander Stewart was born 23 Sep 1729 on the Isle of Inchfad on Loch Lomond in Buchanan parish, Stirlingshire, Scotland, as a son of Duncan Stewart and Margaret McJock-alias-McFarlane. “Sept’r 23rd 1729, Duncan Stewart in Inchfad and Marg’t McJock spouses had a lawful son baptized called Alexander. Witnesses John McInugator in Inchcaillagh and John Lord in Inchfad.” (Buchanan Parish Register)

Alexander Stewart was just six years old when his father died in 1736.

In 1737, at age 7, Alexander Stewart was listed in the Buchanan Parish Examination Roll as residing at Arrachie Beg with his recently widowed mother and his siblings: John Stewart (age 10) and Janet Stewart (age 8).

In 1739, at age 10, Alexander Stewart was listed in the Buchanan Parish Examination Roll as residing at the nearby farm of Gartlanmore in the home of John McFarlane, possibly the father of his sister Janet’s future husband.

Alexander is not found in the 1740 Buchanan Parish Examination Roll.

In 1743, at age 13 Alexander Stewart was listed in the Buchanan Parish Examination Roll as residing at Gartlanmore in the home of John McFarlane.

In 1746, at age 17, Alexander Stewart was listed in the Buchanan Parish Examination Roll as residing at Sousty? in House of Buchanan as a servant to Douglas Hay.

Alexander next appears in records in 1750, at age 20, when he is cited in the Buchanan Kirk Session Minutes for fornication with Helen McMillan. Amusingly, when asked when the child was conceived, Helen comments that “she could give up no definite time when the child was begot being that they were frequently guilty.”

“Nov’r 6, 1750. Helen McMillan being summoned, called, and compeared being asked if she was with child, acknowledged that she was. Likewise being aske who was the father answered that it was Alex’r Stuart present servant to Mr. Robert McFarlan and that she could give up no definite time when the child was begot being that they were frequently guilty. She being further asked if ever she told him she was with child said she did before she went to her harvest and that he did not deny it to her.

“Alex’r Stuart being called compeared and acknowledged that he was the father of this child and they were both admonished to repentance the session appoints them to compear before the congregation to profess repentance when called. The Session closed with prayer.” (Buchanan Kirk Session Minutes)

On 28 Nov 1750, Helen McMillan gave birth to a daughter, Agnes Stewart, and tragically died in childbirth. The fate of Agnes is unknown.

“Auchengyle Decem’r 17th 1750 – As to the scandal betwixt Helen McMillan and Alex’r Stuart reported that the woman died in child bed. They appoint Alex’r Stuart to compear to profess repentance when called.” (Buchanan Kirk Session Minutes)

Four years later, on 23 July 1754, Alexander Stewart and Katherine Bell residing at Blairvocky, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotand, had a daughter Janet. She is described as a lawful daughter, which means that Alexander and Katherine were married, however, no record of their marriage has been found. “Alexander Stewart and Katerine Bell in Blairvocky, had a lawful daughter baptized called Janet. Witnesses: John Leny in Luig and Patherick Martin in Gartencaber.” (Buchanan Parish Register)

Alexander Stewart and his young family disappear from record after 1754. It is presumed that they moved away. Their later whereabouts is unknown. He may be the Alexander Stewart from 2-Line who moved to Glasgow to become a spirit dealer. (See note below.)

Alexander Stewart, Spirit Dealer in Glasgow

It is possible that Alexander Stewart may be the following from Stewarts of the South, 2-Line of the Stewarts in Coillemore:

“Alexr Stewart, late spirit dealer in Glasgow, left two sons – Henry a clerk in Glasgow, [who is] the cleverest that we mentioned yet, if he had the balance wheel about him [and] David, [who is] in the Army.”

Alexander’s father lived for a time on Inchfad where his McFarlane relatives ran the distillery. This would fit for Alexander moving to Glasgow to sell said whisky.

No matching births for a Henry Stewart, son of Alexander, has been found between 1755-1780 anywhere near Glasgow.

Her younger children, Katherine (age 6), Margaret (age 3), and Mary (age 1), are not listed.

In 1739, widow Margaret McJock was listed in the Buchanan Parish Examination Roll as residing at Lagganmuir on the Arrachie estate with her young daughters, Margaret Stewart (age 5) and Mary Stewart (age 3). Her son, Alexander Stewart (age 10) was residing at the nearby farm of Gartlanmore, in the home of John McFarlane. Her children John Stewart (age 12), Janet Stewart (age 10), and Katherine (age 8) are not listed. Their whereabouts is unknown.

In 1740, widow Margaret McJock was listed in the Buchanan Parish Examination Roll as residing at Lagganmuir on the Arrachie estate with her daughters, Katherine Stewart (10) and Margaret Stewart (7).

In 1743, widow Margaret McJock was listed in the Buchanan Parish Examination Roll as residing at Lagganmuir on the Arrachie estate with her daughters, Margaret Stewart (age 10) and Mary Stewart (age 8). Her son Alexander Stewart (age 13) was residing nearby at Gartlanmore in the home of John McFarlane. Daughter Janet Stewart (age 15) was residing at Brant of Gartkeloir (near Knappach) in the home of Robert McKechnie. The whereabouts of the rest of her children is unknown.

In 1746, Margaret McJock was listed in the Buchanan Parish Examination Roll as residint at Lagganeurgh on the Arrachie estate with her daughters Margaret Stewart (age 13) and Katherine Stewart (age 16). Mary Stewart’s later whereabouts are unknown. She would have been 24 years old at the time of the 1759 Examination Roll, so she may have married to an unknown man.

John Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1700 in Blarnavaid, Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland, as a son of Walter Stewart and Helen Buchanan, although no record of his birth has been found. His father’s name is confirmed in the 1726 Kirk Session record of his illicit relationship with his future wife, Mary McFarlane.

In 1726, John Stewart had premarital relations with Mary McFarlane. On 9 Oct 1726, John Stewart confessed to the Buchanan Kirk Session that he was the father of Mary’s unborn child.

“October 9th 1726 – The which day Mary McFarlane being cited and compeared and deponed yt (that) she was with child to John Stewart, son to Walter Stewart in Blarnavaid. The officer is ordained to cite the said John Stewart against ys day eight days and the said Mary to attend also. At Drymen 8ber (October)16th 1726. After prayer sederunt Min’r and elders, John Stewart being cited and appointed was called and Mary McFarlane’s confession being read to him he confessed the same to be true. They were both rebuked for yr (their) sin and exhorted to repentance and the said John was ordained to compear in publick against ys day eight days to begin his repentance.” (Drymen Kirk Session Minutes)

If Mary was starting to show in October, then their child was presumably born sometime in March or April of 1727, although no record of the child’s birth or baptism has been found.

On 28 May 1727, John Stewart married in Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland, to Mary McFarlane. Their marriage was registered secondly on 15 Jun 1727 in Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland. “May 28 1727, John Stewart in the parish of Drymen and Mary McFarlane in this parish (Buchanan) gave up their names to be proclaimed in order to marriage. Married at the manse of Buchanan June 15 1727. (Buchanan Parish Register) “…16 John Stewart and Mary McFarlane in [ink smear] married.” (Drymen Parish Register)

The 1732 Drymen Parish Communion Roll lists George Stewart and (his brother) John Stewart, both in Blarnavad, paying £00:06:00. It is inferred from this reference that John is the younger brother as he is listed second.

John Stewart disappears from records after 1734. His later whereabouts is unknown.

Duncan Stewart was born 2 Jan 1798 in Drymen Village, Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland as the eldest son of John Stewart and Mary Battison. He was named after his paternal grandfather, Duncan Stewart.

He was likely still alive in 1815 as Stewarts of the South, c. 1815, says that five of John Stewart’s six sons were living. It does not indicate which ones.

Duncan has not been found in later records. (He is not the Duncan Stewart who married Jane McLaren. That is Duncan Stewart in Drymen from the Achra family – 9-Line of the Stewarts of Glenogle.)

Andrew Stewart, b. 15 Jul 1799, Drymen Village, Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland , d. Between 1847 and 1851, Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland   (Age 47 years).

Andrew Stewart was born 15 Jul 1799 in Drymen Village, Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland as the second son of John Stewart and Mary Battison. He was named after his maternal grandfather, Andrew Battison.

On 24 Jun 1831, Andrew Stewart and Jane Campbell had a son, Andrew in Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland, three years prior to their marriage. He was presumably illegitimate.

On 5 Apr 1834, Andrew Stewart married at Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland to Jane Campbell. Jane was three months pregnant at the time.

“1834 – Andrew Stewart, Contractor in the Village, and Jane, daughter of Hugh Campbell in Over Gartness, both in this parish, listed for proclamation of Banns, this 5th day of April 1834 and were married by the Rev’s Alex’r Lochore.” (Drymen Parish Register)

Six months later, in October 1834, Andrew Stewart and Jane Campbell had a daughter, Jane Gow Stewart.

In January 1836 at the baptism of their daughter Mary, Andrew Stewart’s employment was listed as an “undertaker” — presumably an undertaker of roads.

On 19 Aug 1836, Andrew Stewart and Jane Campbell’s eldest son, Andrew, died at the age of 5. He is buried in the Drymen village cemetery.

They had another daughter, Janet in 1838, then a son Andrew in 1839 who was named after his deceased older brother.

In 1841, Andrew Stewart was residing at Ken-ma-hame in Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland, with his wife and children. He was employed as an agriculatural labourer. Ken-ma-hame has not been found on maps and is presumed to be a residence in Drymen Village.

Andrew Stewart is presumed to have died sometime between 1847, when his last child was born, and the next census in 1851, in which his wife is found widowed.

In 1851, Andrew’s widow, Jane Stewart, was residing at Main Street in Balfron Village, Balfron, Stirlingshire, Scotland, with her children. She is listed as an agricultural labourer’s widow and a winder of cotton yarn.

In 1861, Andrew’s widow, Jane Stewart, was residing at 1 Buchanan Street in Balfron Village, Balfron, Stirlingshire, Scotland, with her teenage sons, John and Duncan. She was employed as a washer and dresser of clothes.

Jane died in 1868.

As her siblings were born in Middle Third, it would appear to refer to Middle Third.

Agnes Stewart is presumed to have died young prior to the birth of her same-named sister in 1729.

When Christian was a young girl, her family moved just 3 km away to Lead, another farm on the Gartmore estate, but which happens to be across the parish and county boundary in Drymen, Stirlingshire and so sounds further away than it actually is.

On 6 Jul 1745, Christian Stewart married in Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland, to Robert McNair in neighbouring Dullat farm. “1745, July 6, Robert McNair in Duilat and Christian Stewart daughter of James Stewart in ___ Lead both parishioners listed. They had two recorded children between 1746-1759 and one additional confirmed daughter, Isabel, who was likely born about 1760 and for whom no baptismal record survives. McF.” then she is believed to be not the same person as Margaret McFarlane McLellan. Her date of birth is not know and is only estimated here.

Malcolm McLellan died on 12 Dec 1862 in Cranbourne, Casey, Victoria, Australia. Afterwhich, Margaret married secondly to William Harwood. It is not known if they also had children.

OBITUARY. The very many friends of Mr Duncan Stewart, of Bangholme, will be pained to hear of his demise at the early age of 56 years. The deceased was a fine, hardy Scotchman, and might have lived for another quarter of a century, but about six months ago he caught a severe cold, which he neglected, and it settled upon his lungs, ending in his demise on Monday night, 5th instant. Deceased was of a most genial and liberal nature-generous to a fault and many times he has given a helping hand to those who required a little monetary assistance, even without a scratch of the pen. Deceased was unmarried, but has a number of relations living. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, and the cortege was a lengthy one, persons travelling a long distance to pay the last tribute of respect to their old friend. The remains were interred in the Presbyterian portion of the Dandenong cemetery, Mr Jas. W. Garner having charge of the funeral arrangements.

Duncan Stewart’s will identifies him as the husband of Margaret Kirkham and names Matilda Jeanie Finlay as his executor. Her relationship is not indicated. He is identified as a “gentleman” which presumably indicates that he was a land owner.
