    Stewarts of the South

    The complete collection of letters written by Capt. James Stewart, factor (estate manager) to Maj. Gen. David Stewart of Garth, comprising a near-complete inventory of all Stewart families living in southern Perthshire, including all branches of the Stewarts of Balquhidder. Written about 1815-1820.

    The Settlements of Western Perthshire by James Stewart

    The Settlements of Western Perthshire by James Stewart, PhD. James is a retired professor of Geography. This is an excellent book based on his earlier PhD thesis, which gives a comprehensive history of the Balquhidder area as well as a detailed archaeological survey of the ruins of James’ ancestral Stewart home, Lianach in Glenbuckie. While the book is hard to find and can be expensive, his original PhD these is online and can be found by clicking this blurb.

    Highland Strathearn by Peter McNaughton, FSA (Scot)

    Peter’s excellent site provides a wealth of information on the area from Loch Earn to the east. This is particularly relevant to descendants of the Stewarts of Ardvorlich, but others may find helpful resources here too. Peter’s work is cited several times on our site here.
