This page introduces you to various families of the surname Stewart who resided in the parish of Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland or in neighbouring parishes in southern Perthshire. The Stewart families presented below lived in the “territory” of the Stewarts of Balquhidder, but were either not paternally related to any branch of the Stewarts of Balquhidder or their link to the Stewarts of Balquhidder has not been determined.. These families are documented in Stewarts of the South: Section IV – Miscellany or have been found in public records and are accounted here in more detail in an effort to help distinguish them from the Stewart families of the Balquhidder clan or to eventually identify their correct connection.
The following list of families is by no means complete or comprehensive. It represents only those families that we have been able to provide some accounting of.

William Stewart’s 1873 Family Tree
In 2008 Scott Williamson graciously transcribed a complete family tree which was authored by Donald Stewart’s great-grandson, William Stewart (son of William, son of Robert, son of Donald). William Stewart Jr was residing in Glasgow at the time and the content of the tree seems to indicate that it was compiled entirely from personal correspondence with living relatives in each of the various branches, making the reliability of the tree very high. We have relied heavily on the data given in William Stewart’s family tree.

Donald Stewart in Edinample
Donald STEWART in Lochearnhead and Edinample was presumably born in Perthshire, Scotland, perhaps in Methven and probably sometime around 1730, but his exact birth record has not been identified. He was NOT descended from any branch of the Stewarts of Balquhidder, although he hand his descendants resided in Balquhidder and nearby. Like many other families on this page, his family was annotated in Stewarts of the South and we have found he helpful to account for his full family in order to to help differentiate his descendants from their Balquhidder Stewart neighbours. Also, many of Donald’s descendants married into Balquhidder Stewart families.
According to Stewarts of the South, Donald Stewart in Edinample was descended from the Stewarts of Druimcharry, a cadet branch of the Stewarts of Atholl, and related to the Stewarts of Garth. In the mid-17th century, the Druimcharry Stewarts held joint ownership in the property of Dalveich on the north shore of Loch Earn in Balquhidder parish, along with the family of the Stewarts of Dalveich.
The author of Stewarts of the South said “But I think [Donald] was a MacanDahulic, but it is no matter [as] he was both honest and industrious.” The Gaelic has been somewhat corrupted or at least compressed here so there are two possible renderings of “macanDahulic”: it could a corrupted form of mac Iain Dubhlaic, or “John the Badly Behaved”, or more colloquially, “John the Scoundrel”, or it could be mac an dubh chulloch which means “son (or clan) of the black boar” which is believed to be the name of the cadet branch of the Invernahyle Stewarts of Appin who settled in Glen Finglas. John would be the patriarch of the clan from which the author of Stewarts of the South believed Donald was descended. When the author says “but it is no matter [as] he was both honest and industrious” it could mean “Donald is descended from John The Scoundrel, but Donald himself was both honest and industrious.”
What the author of Stewarts of the South was essentially saying was: “Donald believed he was descended from the Stewarts of Druimcharry, but I think he actually belonged to the Clan of the Black Boar (a branch of the Stewarts of Appin). But it doesn’t really matter one way or the other because he was an honest man and a hard worker.”
Donald Stewart was employed as a wright for the family of Campbell of Auchlyne and resided in Methven, Perthshire. He moved with his employer from Methven to Edinample prior to the birth of his first child. Balquhidder OPR confirms that Donald worked as a wright at Edinample and resided nearby at Lochearnhead. Many of his descendants continued in the family occupation as mechanical wrights in Glasgow and later generations went into automobile manufacturing. Several of the descendant branches of this family later emigrated to New Zealand.
Donald Stewart married on 24 JAN 1761 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret MURRAY-alias-MCGREGOR. The parish register records them both as being “in this parish”. They had the following children:
- John STEWART b: ABT 16 AUG 1761 in Edinample, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. John died young prior to the birth of his same-named brother in 1779.
- Patrick/Peter STEWART , in Lochearnhead b: ABT 7 AUG 1763 in Balvoir, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. (Mother given as Margaret McGrigor.) Peter is described in Stewarts of the South as being a wright and lint miller at Lochearnhead. He was recorded as “a wright in Lochearnhead” in the Balquhidder OPR entry for his second son’s baptism. Peter is also cited in Mitchell’s Monumental Inscriptions for Balquhidder Cemetery, as follows: “2 Peter STEWART, wright, 30 AUG 1832, wife Janet Fisher 25 JUN 1836 by (their) children.” Peter Stewart married on 25 FEB 1792 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet FISHER b: ABT 5 FEB 1768 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of Duncan Fisher and Catherine McIntyre.

According to the 1873 Family Tree, Helen married firstly to a Dochert and had a daughter Mary who married a McIntyre and moved to Canada and had children: Mary, Duncan, John, Peter, Helen. Helen married secondly to a McGregor and had children John and Christina and resided on the Blair Drummond Moss. Her second family are easily identifiable in the 1814 Blair Drummond Moss Census, showing her husband as Malcolm McGregor. It says they came from Balquhidder and had been settled on the Moss for 10 years.. They resided at #3 Robertson’s Lane and owned 1 cat, 1 chicken, 2 cows, 1 horse, 1 harrow, 1 plough, and 1 cart. Her marriage records in Balquhidder and Kincardine both indicate that she was from Balquhidder and Malcolm was from Kincardine. Helen married to Unknown DOCHART b: ABT 1765 in Scotland. They had the following child:
- Mary DOCHART b: ABT 1790 in Scotland. She married on 24 NOV 1816 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland to Daniel MCINTYRE b: ABT 1790 in Scotland. - Robert STEWART in Glasgow b: ABT 11 AUG 1770 in Croft of Edinample, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. (Mother given as Margaret Murray.) Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as being a wright in Glasgow with three or four sons. Many of Robert’s nephews later moved to the greater Glasgow area to become mechanical wrights. It appears that Robert was the first of the family to do so. It is not known if his nephews followed him there and worked with him or if it is merely coincidental. The marriage and children shown here for Robert are NOT CONFIRMED. This is the only Robert Stewart in the IGI with an eldest son named Peter. This family fits with the description in Stewarts of the South and with the 1873 Family Tree. It is suggested that Robert married on 30 MAY 1796 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland to Margaret LILLIE? b: ABT 1770 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.
- Janet STEWART b: ABT 4 APR 1773 in Croft of Edinample, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. (Mother given as Margaret McGrigor.) - Donald/Daniel STEWART , in Kirkline b: ABT 6 DEC 1781 in Croft of Edinample, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Donald’s exact date of birth is uncertain as the entry is inserted into the Balquhidder OPR out of sequence. Donald is described in Stewarts of the South as residing in Kirkline, Flander’s Moss, Blair Drummond, Kincardine-by-Doune parish, and as having a family of sons ca. 1815. The 1814 Moss Census shows Donald residing at #12 Kirk Lane, Blair Drummond Moss, just three farms away from his brother John at #9 Kirk Lane. They owned one cow and one horse and had been living on the Moss for only one year. Their former residence was given as Lochearnhead. John married on 7 AUG 1814 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet MCDIARMID believed to have been born: ABT 7 MAR 1798 in Killin, Perthshire, Scotland as the daughter of John and Catharine McDiarmid. John Stewart and Janet McDiarmid had the following children:

Janet married on 23 MAR 1850 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Alexander STEWART b: 1829 in Kenmore, Perthshire, Scotland. (Alexander’s birth family has not been identified, but, given that he came from Kenmore, it seems likely that he is not descended from any branch of the Stewarts of Balquhidder, but more likely descends from one of the Atholl Stewart families.) Janet and Alexander had the following children:
- John STEWART b: ABT 1850 in Balquhidder or Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland

Peter married on 10 NOV 1850 in Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland to Elizabeth CHRISTIE b: 1835 in Innisewan, Killin, Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following son:
- Robert STEWART b: ABT 16 SEP 1798 in Rannag of Glenogle, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. (Father shown as Patric Stewart.) Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as being an unmarried labourer. (ca. 1815)
- Janet STEWART b: ABT 2 DEC 1800 in Glenogle, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. (Father shown as Peter Stewart.)
- Duncan STEWART b: 1804 in Glenogle, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. No birth record has been found for Duncan, however the 1873 family tree for Donald Stewart in Edinample shows the earlier Duncan having died young and the later Duncan being born just prior to Margaret and that he was the one who marred and had children. Duncan is described in Stewarts of the South as being the third son and as being a merchant in Lochearnhead and unmarried ca. 1815. In 1841 he is found in Lochearnhead, age 35, working as a Grocer or Merchant, and residing with his brother, John and family. Duncan is listed in Mitchell’s Monumental Inscriptions for Balquhidder Cemetery: “Duncan STEWART in Lochearnhead, 8 JUN 1845, age 41, only son Duncan Robert, MB CM died 4 MAY 1886, age 40.” Duncan married on 9 JUL 1842 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet STEWART b: 1817 in Dull, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of Charles Stewart and Margaret Robertson. (As she came from Dull, it is unlikely that she is descended from any branch of the Stewarts of Balquhidder.) In 1861 Janet is living in Lochearnhead with her 52 year old sister, Isabella Stewart, her son Duncan and her nephew Peter. Duncan and Janet had the following children, the second of whom is recorded as having been born posthumously:
- Margaret Ann STEWART b: ABT 29 MAY 1844 in Lochearnhead, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
- Dr. Duncan Robert STEWART, MB, CM, b: 29 JUL 1845 in Lochearnhead, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Duncan’s birth is recorded in the Balquhidder OPR as: “1845 Sept 15 – The late Duncan Stewart and spouse Janet Stewart Lochearnhead had a child born 29 July last baptd named Duncan Robert.” Duncan Robert and his father are recorded in Mitchell’s Monumental Inscriptions for Balquhidder Cemetery as: “Duncan is listed in Mitchell’s Monumental Inscriptions for Balquhidder Cemetery: “Duncan STEWART in Lochearnhead, 8 JUN 1845, age 41, only son Duncan Robert, MB CM died 4 MAY 1886, age 40.” The conjoint degree of MB CM (Medicinae Baccalaureus et Chirurgiae Magister) was awarded briefly by Glasgow University in the mid-19th century as a shorter alternative to the MD course. [c/o Scott Williamson]
- Margaret STEWART b: ABT 25 MAR 1804 in Glenogle, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. (Father shown as Peter Stewart.) Margaret is shown in the 1873 Family Tree as having married a man named Stewart and having two children: Janet and Peter. Janet is shown as having married a man surnamed Gray. Their marriage record show’s Janet’s parents as “Donald Stewart and Margaret Stewart.” Margaret had relations with Donald STEWART believed to have been born: ABT 22 JUL 1797 in Monzievaird and Strowan, Perthshire, Scotland, as the son of Archibald Stewart and Christian McEwan, however this birth is not confirmed. Donald and Margaret had the following child, believed to be illegitimate:
- Janet STEWART b: 4 JUL 1830 in Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland. It is believed that she was born illegitimately, but the Crieff OPR has not yet been consulted to verify this matter. Janet is the only child born to this couple, yet she appears in later census records with the family of Donald Stewart and Ann Guild. Janet’s marriage record to James Gray indicates her parents’ names as “Donald Stewart, labourer, and Margaret Stewart, maiden name Stewart” and gives Janet’s age as 26. Census records with her married family show that she was born in Crieff. Only one Janet Stewart, daughter of a Donald Stewart has been found in earlier census records in Crieff matching this description; that being the Janet described here. Janet married on 13 JAN 1857 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to James GRAY b: 1 NOV 1829 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, son of Malcolm Gray and Susanna McGregor. Janet and James had the following children:
- Malcolm GRAY b: 10 SEP 1857 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland

- Margaret Ann GRAY b: 26 MAY 1862 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Robina Stewart GRAY b: 6 DEC 1864 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Donald GRAY b: 23 JUN 1867 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Peter John McIntyre GRAY b: 2 AUG 1873 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- Kathrine STEWART b: ABT 22 NOV 1805 in Glenogle, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. (Father shown as Peter Stewart.) According to the 1873 Family Tree, this Katharine died young without marrying and without children.

Robert Stewart in Glasgow
Robert STEWART in Glasgow b: ABT 11 AUG 1770 in Croft of Edinample, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of Donald Stewart in Edinample.
It is suggested that Robert married on 30 MAY 1796 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland to Margaret LILLIE? b: ABT 1770 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland and had the following children:

His former residence is given as Balquhidder. The following burial entries from Mitchell’s Monumental Inscriptions for Kincardine Cemetery pertain to Duncan’s family:

Flora was the daughter of Duncan McMichael and Barbara Stewart. Flora’s mother, Barbara Stewart, is believed to have been born 17 MAR 1774 in Kilfinan, Argyll, Scotland as the daughter of Neil Stewart and Jean Smith. The origins of Neil Stewart’s family have not been identified, although they appear to be domestic to Kintyre and are probably not related to the Stewarts of Balquhidder. Donald Stewart and Flora McMichael had the following children:
- Christina STEWART b: 1830 in Southend, Argyll, Scotland. According to an LDS entry, Christina married on 8 JUL 1858 in Southend, Argyll, Scotland to John REID b: ABT 1830 in Scotland. This is not recorded in the 1873 Donald Stewart Family Tree.

Peter’s first marriage in Kincardine reads: “1831 Decr 25 Peter Stewart in the parish of Eastwood and Elizabeth Stewart in this parish.” In 1841 and 1851 Peter was residing in Thornliebank, Eastwood, Renfrew, Scotland and had his nephew John Stewart (son of his sister, Mary Stewart) apprenticing with him. The 1851 census shows Peter’s place of birth as Kincardine, though he was baptised in Balquhidder. His parents moved to Kincardine before Peter was two years old, so he “grew up” in Kincardine. Peter resided in 1861 in Barony, Glasgow and was an “engineer and machine maker employing 120 men”. Peter married firstly on 24 AND 25 DEC 1831 in Eastwood, Renfrew and Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland to Elisabeth STEWART b: ABT 14 SEP 1806 in Rosslane, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland as the daughter of Donald Stewart and Janet Ferguson, believed to be of the Stewarts of Dalveich – Line 4 in Walbeich. Maria Beardmore was sister to Sir William Beardmore, Lord Invernairn (1856-1936), a famous British automobile manufacturer. Sir William Beardmore had no children and named his nephew, William Beardmore Stewart as heir. Duncan and Maria had the following children:

His sole heir, William Beardmore Stewart, had been killed in action in 1917.”

Alexander married on 12 FEB 1837 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland to Mary DOWNIE b: 2 JUL 1817 in Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of William Downie and Mary STEWART. Mary Stewart was the daughter of John STEWART in Immereoin and Muirlaggan (of the Stewarts in Strone and Inverlochlarig, 3b Line of Glenbuckie Branch VI – Walter Stewart of the Ravine) . It is possible that “Downie” may be a corruption of Donnchaidh (“Duncan” in Gaelic) which is sometimes pronounced “Downahee”. Alexander Stewart and Mary Downie had the following children:- Duncan STEWART b: ABT 20 DEC 1837 in Westwood, Flanders Moss, Blair Drummond Estate, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland. He died in infancy.

While “Wright” is an old English name for a carpenter.) This family is found in Mitchell’s Monumental Inscriptions for Kincardine Cemetery: “67b Daniel WRIGHT (MCINTYRE) 28 MAR 1875, age 70, in memory of (his) wife Helen STEWART 4 OCT 1870, age 60, daughter Christina 15 MAY 1871, age 36, son Duncan 29 MAY 1870, age 21, daughter Helen 21 AUG 1855, age 16.” Helen and Daniel had the following children:

John Stewart in Kirkline
John STEWART , in Kirkline b: ABT 19 JUL 1779 in Croft of Edinample, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of Donald Stewart in Edinample and Margaret Murray-alias-McGregor, as shown above.
John’s first name not recorded on his baptism record in the Balquhidder OPR. John is described in Stewarts of the South appendix as residing in Kirkline, Flander’s Moss, Blair Drummond, Kincardine-by-Doune parish, and as having a family of sons who are under age, ca. 1815. The 1814 Moss Census shows John residing at #9 Kirk Line in Blair Drummond Moss, just three farms away from his brother Donald at #12 Kirk Lane. They owned two chickens and one cow. Their former residence was given as Balquhidder. John married firstly on 21 AND 31 MAY 1803 in Balquhidder and Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland to Mary GOW b: 1778 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland.
John and Mary’s daughter Margaret was the first of this family to emigrate. Margaret and her husband James went with James’ family to Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada in 1830. In 1843 the church in Scotland split and the Free Kirk broke away. John’s eldest son, Daniel, joined the Free Kirk and John and his son Daniel had a falling out over their religious differences. Daniel immigrated two years later in 1845 to Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada and, five years later, after John and Daniel had reconciled, John and Mary followed and settled on a farm in Horton Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. This family is being discussed here: http://www.hostmybb.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=220&mforum=stewart.
John Stewart and Mary Gow had the following children:
- Donald\Daniel STEWART b: ABT 13 NOV 1803 in Moss, Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland. According to descendant Doug Cram: Donald quarrelled with his father over religion at the time of the great split in the Presbyterian church in 1843; he became Free Church while his father remained Auld Kirk. They were later reconciled and John visited the family in Canada, he returned at a later date and settled in Horton. An ancestor was Black Donald Stewart, an outlaw and smuggler who had evaded capture by the revenuers until one night he was discovered by them while drinking in a tavern. The building was surrounded and the captain burst in through the door with his sword drawn, followed by his men. Ah weel, Donald he said I guess we have ye noo! Ah weel, replied Donald, I guess ye have! Whereupon he up-ended the table in front of him, and drawing his sword, fought is way through the enemy and escaped into the night. They immigrated with several other Dalveich Stewarts in 1830 to Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. They had the following children; their full information is presented on the Stewarts of Dalveich Page.

- Marjory STEWART b: ABT 9 OCT 1808 in Kirklane, Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland. According to the 1873 Donald Stewart in Edinample Family Tree, Marjory married a man named Mitchell and moved to Ireland and had children David and Anne. She is listed in the 1841 census residing with her brother Daniel Stewart. Marjory married sometime after 1841 to David MITCHELL b: 1808 in Scotland. Marjory’s cousin, Robert Stewart (b 1823, son of Donald Stewart in Kirkline & Jean McLashan), apprenticed as a blacksmith with a David Stewart, b 1808, and named one of his sons, David Mitchell Stewart. As this David Mitchell is the same age as Marjory Stewart and would thus be the right age to be her husband, it seems extremely likely that they are the same person.
- David MITCHELL b: ABT 1842 in Ireland
- Anne MITCHELL b: ABT 1844 in Ireland
- Mary STEWART b: ABT 2 JUN 1811 in Kirklane, Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland. Mary married on 14 NOV 1837 in Stirling, Stirling, Scotland to John STALKER b: AUG 1799 in Kenmore, Perthshire, Scotland, son of Duncan Stalker and Janet Robertson. They had the following children:
- Mary STALKER b: ABT 5 JUN 1838 in Stirling, Stirling, Scotland
- Janet Robertson STALKER b: ABT 28 JUN 1840 in Stirling, Stirling, Scotland
- Margaret STALKER b: ABT 5 JUN 1842 in Stirling, Stirling, Scotland
- Marjory STALKER b: ABT 1844 in Stirlingshire, Scotland
- Duncan STALKER b: 1849 in St. Ninians, Stirlingshire, Scotland
- John STALKER b: 1851 in St. Ninians, Stirlingshire, Scotland
- Finlay STALKER b: 1854 in St. Ninians, Stirlingshire, Scotland
- John STEWART b: ABT 6 NOV 1814 in Kirklane, Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland.
Mary Gow is presumed to have died in (or shortly after) childbirth. John Stewart married secondly on 6 MAY 1815 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland to Mary FERGUSON who is believed to have been born: ABT 21 JAN 1798 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland as the daughter of Alexander Ferguson and Helen Giggy. John Stewart and Mary Ferguson had the following children:
- Alexander STEWART b: ABT 2 JUN 1816 in Kirklane, Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland. Alexander is not found in later records and is presumed to have died young.
- Helen STEWART b: ABT 26 SEP 1819 in Kirklane, Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland. The 1873 Tree shows Helen has having married a man named “Mochrie” and having moved to Canada. Helen married on 14 AND 15 NOV 1840 in Lecropt and Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland to Robert Mochrie with Helen being from Kincardine parish and Robert being from Lecropt. Helen is found in 1841 with Robert Mochrie in Drip Hill (probably associated with Drip Moss), Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland with their daughter Elizabeth who is shown as 1 year old. Helen’s husband, Robert, is found in Canadian records after immigration consistently shown with the surname EARLY/EARLEY, including death, burial and census records as well as the marriage of his son John. His descendants are found consistently with the surname EARLY/EARLEY. However Robert is found in Scottish records prior to immigration consistently with the surname MOCHRIE/MACHRIE, including his marriage and likely birth. Canadian census records show him born 1814 in Stirling. No record of a Robert Early/Earley can be found anywhere in Stirling at any time. However a Robert Mochrie was born in 1814 in Stirling to Robert Mochrie and Jean Gibb. This matches onomastically partially with the children of Robert and Helen, excepting the absence of a son Robert. If we note the gap in birth order of their children in 1840 a son Robert could easily have been born here who did not survive. It is thus suggested that Robert MOCHRIE/MACHRIE phonetically altered and Anglicized his surname to EARLY/EARLEY upon immigration. Such Anglicizations of Gaelic surnames were not uncommon on immigration in that era. Helen and Robert moved to Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada and had the following family:
- Elizabeth EARLEY b: 1838 in Clackmannan, Scotland
- Mary EARLEY b: 1842 in Stirling, Scotland
- John EARLEY b: 1844 in Horton Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Jane EARLEY b: 1846 in Horton Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Margaret EARLEY b: 1848 in Horton Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Thomas EARLEY b: 1850 in Horton Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Daniel EARLEY b: 19 JUL 1856 in Horton, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Marjory EARLEY b: 15 JUN 1864 in Horton, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Isabella EARLEY b: 1867 in Horton, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
- Catharine STEWART b: ABT 1822 in Kirklane, Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland
- Peter STEWART b: ABT 1825 in Kirklane, Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland. Peter is listed in the 1873 Family Tree but has not been found in any census or OPR records.
Donald/Daniel Stewart in Kirkline
Donald/Daniel STEWART , in Kirkline b: ABT 6 DEC 1781 in Croft of Edinample, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of Donald Stewart in Edinample. Helen married on 16 APR 1843 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland to James HUTTON b: 1810 in Scotland. They immigrated to Gloucester Township in Carleton County, Ontario, Canada, near the present-day city of Ottawa. They had the following children:

(Mother given as “Jean McGlashan.”) Duncan resided in 1861 in Anderston, Barony, Glasgow and died bef 1871 when his widow is found living in the same place. Duncan married on 11 DEC 1842 in St. Ninians and Stirling, Stirling, Scotland to Mary KAY b: 1821 in Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following children:
- Daniel STEWART b: ABT 27 SEP 1843 in Eastwood, Renfrew, Scotland

- Ann STEWART b: ABT 13 MAY 1821 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland. (Mother given as “Jean McGlashan.”) According to the 1873 Family Tree, Ann never married.
- Robert STEWART b: ABT 13 APR 1823 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland. (Father given as “Daniel Stewart”.) In 1841 Robert is age 15 and apprenticing as a blacksmith under David Mitchell. Also residing in the same house are 15 year old Jean Robertson, presumably the same Jane Robertson that Robert later married, and her brothers Alexander Robertson (a journeyman blackmsith) and John Robertston. Robert later named one of his sons, David Mitchell Stewart. This same David Mitchell is believed to be the Mitchell who married Robert Stewart’s cousin, Marjory Stewart and moved to Ireland between 1841-1851. Robert was employed as a Master Blacksmith at Semple Castle. Robert married on 5 AND 18 DEC 1847 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire and Govan, Lanark, Scotland to Jane ROBERTSON b: 1826 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following children:
- James? STEWART, b: 3 NOV 1848 in Lochwinnoch, Renfrew, Scotland. The OPR for Lochwinnoch shows “3 NOV 1848 James Stewart, son lawful of Robert Stewart and Jane Robertson was born at Milnagaveny 3rd November and baptized.” This entry is recorded out of sequence with the rest of the baptisms on the page, which would suggest that the entry was not recorded at the time of baptism but was entered sometime later, either from memory or from external notes. Additionally, James is not found in the Donald Stewart Family Tree and his name violates onomastics. It seems most likely that the OPR is not correct and that parish clerk in copying the entry in later probably misread external notes mistaking “Jane” for “James” and merely presumed “lawful son”.
- Jane STEWART b: 1849 in Milnagavie, Kilpatrick, Stirlingshire, Scotland. No birth record for Jane has been found. However she is found in the following census records shown with the following ages: 1851 – age 2 born in Kilpatrick, Stirlingshire; 1861 – age 12, born at Milnagavie, Stirlingshire; 1871 – age 22, born at Milnagavie, Stirlingshire; 1881 – age 32 born in Scotland (residing in Chelsea, England at the time). These census records consistently show Jane’s birth as 1849. The OPR for Lochwinnoch shows “3 NOV 1848 James Stewart, son lawful of Robert Stewart and Jane Robertson was born 3rd November and baptized.” These births are chronologically impossible unless Jane was an unrecorded twin of James or the OPR has incorrectly recorded Jane’s birth as James. Jane married on 30 DEC 1870 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland to Alexander MORRIS b: 1849 in Methven, Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following children:
- Jane Robertson MORRIS b: 21 NOV 1871 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland
- Agnes Salmon MORRIS b: 20 APR 1873 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland
- Daniel STEWART b: 23 JAN 1851 in Lochwinnoch, Renfrew, Scotland. The 1873 Donald Stewart in Edinample Family Tree indicates that this Daniel Stewart was residing in London in 1873. Daniel has not been found in census records.
- Margaret STEWART b: 27 MAR 1853 in Lochwinnoch, Renfrew, Scotland. Margaret is not found in 1861 and is recorded in the 1873 family tree as being deceased by that time.
- David Mitchell STEWART b: 21 APR 1855 in Lochwinnoch, Renfrew, Scotland
- Janet\Jessie STEWART b: 1857 in Lochwinnoch, Renfrew, Scotland
- Robert STEWART b: 8 JUN 1859 in Lochwinnoch, Renfrew, Scotland

- Daniel STEWART b: 16 JUN 1850 in Kirklane, Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland
- Duncan STEWART b: 10 MAR 1852 in Kirklane, Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland

The Murray-McGregors of Invercarnaig
There is only one family of McGregors in the parish of Balquhidder known to have used the alias Murray and that is the family of Sir John McGregor-Murray, one of the richest men in Balquhidder. There is an extensive description of his family in Stewarts of the South: McGregor of Carnaig. Chronologically it would seem most likely that Margaret MacGregor-alias-Murray, above, could be either an older sister or younger aunt of Sir John (shown below). The family of Murray-MacGregor is known as follows:
Iain Oag Beg MACGREGOR, b. ca. 1680. According to Stewarts of the South, he “made a runaway marriage with a daughter of Coirchaorach. She was called Mari nighean Eoain (Mary, daughter of Ewan) [and] by her he had three sons.”
- Robert GRAHAM-alias-MACGREGOR of Inverchearnaig, b. ca. 1710. According to Stewarts of the South, Robert was “a decent gentleman [who] married first [to] a daughter of Campbell of Ruoro [in] Glenlyon, by whom he had a son & daughter. The son died in the West Indies and the daughter married a son of Graham of Bogtown [in] Port [of Menteith] parish. And by a fortunate accident she was mother to the present General Graham of Bogton — the richest and the worst of that family or ever was of them. [Robert] Graham ([alias] Macgregor) married again a daughter of [Cameron of] Lodwick , a brother to [Cameron of] Lochiel. She had no family. [He married] thirdly [to] a daughter of Drummond of Hawthernden, whose offspring died or otherwise [they] would enjoy the estate.”
- Ewan mac Iain Oaig MACGREGOR. b. ca. 1715. According to Stewarts of the South, “[Ewan] made a runaway marriage with a daughter of the family of MacDonald [of] Isle of Sky. He was a drover and made her believe [that] he was [the] proprietor of Balquhidder and [the proprietor of] a very well built house [that] she saw when coming home. She thought [the house] to be her own, but all that awaited her was a miserable cottage in the Braes of Balquhidder and a farm of one-fourth of a plough. Sometime thereafter they went to Inverchagerney in Strathfillan where they had a like possession of one-fourth of a plough. With Mary MacDonald, Ewan had four sons:
- General Sir John MURRAY-MACGREGOR of Lendrick, 18th Chief of Clan Gregor, b 1745. According to the Clan Gregor website, Sir John “purchased the estate of Lanrick in 1776 “after making his fortune in India, which he called McGregor Earth and built a Castle there known as Castle Gregor.” He was elected 18th Chief of Clan Gregor in 1775.
- Sir Evan MACGREGOR, 19th Chief of Clan Gregor.
- Colonel Peter MURRAY-MACGREGOR. According to Stewarts of the South, Peter “died coming home from India, [and] who made more money than all the rest.”
- Colonel Alexander MACGREGOR
- Major Robert MACGREGOR
- General Sir John MURRAY-MACGREGOR of Lendrick, 18th Chief of Clan Gregor, b 1745. According to the Clan Gregor website, Sir John “purchased the estate of Lanrick in 1776 “after making his fortune in India, which he called McGregor Earth and built a Castle there known as Castle Gregor.” He was elected 18th Chief of Clan Gregor in 1775.
-
Son MACGREGOR, b abt 1720. His first name is not known. According to Stewarts of the South, he was “a writer (lawyer) in Edinburgh [who] had one son who died in the East India and a daughter [who] married to Donach Maol Chronain’s son, a clerk [in a] commercial bank [in] Edinburgh.”

It seems likely, given geography and onomastics, that the following family are siblings to the preceding family. Whether Patrick Murray-alias-McGregor is the brother of Margaret Murray-alias-McGregor or Catharine Stewart is the sister of Donald Stewart in Edinample, or both, is not certain. The surname Murray is not domestic to Balquhidder and is found in the OPR only in these two families, strongly suggesting they are related. The fact that this couple is not found having children in the parish after 1769, nor is Patrick found having children by a second wife, strongly suggests this couple emigrated about 1770. No other matches for this couple can be found in the IGI anywhere in Scotland.
Chronologically it would seem likely that this Patrick is the Col. Peter Murray-McGregor, brother of Sir John, mentioned above. He is said above to have died shortly after returning from India which would explain the cessation of children in 1769.

Grandtully Stewarts in Comrie and Port of Menteith
There was a family of Stewarts who resided in Comrie and had branches nearby, but who are not related to the Stewarts of Balquhidder. They are said to descend from the Stewarts of Grandtully, a cadet branch of the Stewarts of Innermeath and Lorn, descended initially from Alexander Stewart, 4th High Steward of Scotland — an ancestry they share in common with the Stewarts of Appin. They are accounted for here because they are presented in Stewarts of the South and because they resided amidst other Stewarts of Balquhidder. Thus it is helpful for us to account for them in order to differentiate them from their neighbouring Stewarts of Balquhidder.
(The following line numbers are not found in Stewarts of the South but have been added here to facilitate easier accounting and reading.)
Line 1 in Comrie
According to Stewarts of the South these Stewarts were primarily employed as blacksmiths to the Laird of Lawers and they had been so employed in Comrie “for some generations back.” Stewarts of the South presents only two generations of this family as “they know scarcely anything of their own extraction.” They also had cousins who resided in Port of Menteith parish in Perthshire and Kippin parish in Stirling.
This family is described in Stewarts of the South as follows:
There was a branch of Stewarts that says they are of the family of Grantulloch (Grandtully). [They] came to Strathearn with a daughter of Grantully that was married to the Laird of Lawers. But they know scarcely anything of their own extraction. This was the last Laird of Lawers of the name of Campbell, who was murdered by Barron Edramucky in Greenock when he was to be married to a grandaunt of General Campbell of Monzie.
- James Stewart, [a] smith in Comrie, whose progenitors were from there for some generations back. [He] left three sons
- Peter, a smith in Comrie, [with] a family of sons [who are] all minors
- John, a smith in Crieff, [with] a family of minors
- Duncan, the youngest, [who is] a labourer at Crieff with a family [of] all minors
- Alexander Stewart, brother to the above James, is a smith [at] Lawirs, [working for] Lord Balgray. [He has] one son [who is also] a smith and [a] ferrier. [He has] gone to America [where he has] a family of sons [who are all] minors. They were smiths to the family of Lawirs for a long time back and very good ferriers.
- John Stewart, brother to the above I mentioned, was [a] smith at Muirend near Comrie in the estate of Lord Meagens, [which is] now the property of Capt Graham of Airth and Struan. That estate was in the hands of many proprietors, the first of them was one of the seventeen sons of Murray of Tullibardine, [who was] called Struan Murray. [The property] went to different names. This John left
- one son [with] a family of children [who are] all minors. He (the son or John?) is a smith where his father was. They were industrious well doing people.
The Stewart “daughter of Grantully” mentioned above can be further identified by the following references from Gordon MacGregor’s, Landed Families of Strathearn:
James Campbell, 8th of Lawers, retoured heir to his half-brother, James Campbell, 7th of Lawers, on 12 JUL 1703 and is then styled as “a son by a second marriage of James Campbell of Lawers.” He was murdered in his sleep by Duncan Campbell of Edramuckie while asleep in lodgings in Greenock on 22 APR 1723 and had no issue.
His mother was Anna Stewart, dtr of William Stewart, 1st of Innernytie. She m AUG 1678 to James Campbell 6th of Lawers.
William Stewart, 1st of Innernytie, was second son of Sir William Stewart, 10th of Grantully.
Thus we can say that this family came to Comrie and Crieff in the company of the family of Anna Stewart, daughter of William Stewart, 1st of Innernytie, but that doesn’t help us necessarily identify the progenitor. It could have been Anna’s brother, uncle, or a cousin of unknown distance. Anna’s brothers have all been accounted for so it could not be one of them, unless she had an unaccounted natural brother. There are a couple of possible connections with her uncles and the connection could certainly come from further back. However, it would be unlikely that a relative more distantly related than, say, first cousin would accompany Anna. Thus, for now, we suggest the most likely connection would be by hypothetical unknown descent from William Stewart, 10th of Grantully.
We have successfully identified the main stem of each of the two lines of the Grantully family in Stewarts of the South. Stewarts of the South indicates that they stem from a common ancestors. Given that the earliest ancestor we have discovered in each line were both born ca. 1665-1670 and both had eldest sons named James, it is entirely conceivable that Patrick Stewart of Line 1 and George Stewart of Line 2 could be brothers with a father named James. However such a relationship is purely speculative at this point and we have no evidence to support it.
We account for this family as follows:
Patrick Stewart in Comrie
Patrick STEWART b: ABT 1665 in Lawers, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. Patrick married Janet MCLAREN b: ABT 1670 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following known children:
- J (illegible) James? STEWART b: JUN 1693 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland.
- His information and descendants are presented immediately below.
- John STEWART b: ABT 13 FEB 1694 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland
- Illegible STEWART b: ABT 03 FEB 1696 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland
James? Stewart in Comrie
J (illegible) James? STEWART b: JUN 1693 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of Patrick Stewart and Janet McLaren. The baptism is partially illegible for this entry. Only the first letter ‘J’ can be discerned in June 1693. His parents are shown as Patrick Stewart in Comrie and Janet NicClaren. It is suggested that his name is most likely ‘James’ as James and John are about the only male names that start with J that were common at the time. It is also suggested that he is likely the father of James Stewart, born ca 1730 in Comrie Village as shown here, for whom onomastics would favour that his father was also named James.
According to a descendant tree submitted to Ancestry.com, the parents of this family were Robert STEWART and Ann MORRISON, however that his highly doubtful. Onomastics show no support for the father of James 1730 being named Robert. The fact that their son, James, also married an Ann Morison may represent an error here. The descendant tree gives no source information. No corresponding birth for a James Stewart son of Robert has been found in the Comrie OPR. At present, we reject the suggestion in the Ancestry tree. Onomastics would suggest his name is far more likely to be James. No marriage has been found for James. According to Stewarts of the South he had the following children:
- James STEWART b: ABT 1730 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland
- James’ information and descendants are presented below.
- Alexander STEWART b: ABT 1735 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. No birth record has been found for Alexander. Alexander is described in Stewarts of the South as: “Alexander Stewart, brother to the above James, is a smith [at] Lawirs, [working for] Lord Balgray. [He has] one son [who is also] a smith and [a] ferrier. [He has] gone to America [where he has] a family of sons [who are all] minors. They were smiths to the family of Lawirs for a long time back and very good ferriers.” This family has not been identified in parish records.
- John STEWART b: ABT 1740 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. No birth record has been found for John. John is described in Stewarts of the South as: “John Stewart, brother to the above I mentioned, was [a] smith at Muirend near Comrie in the estate of Lord Meagens, [which is] now the property of Capt Graham of Airth and Struan. That estate was in the hands of many proprietors, the first of them was one of the seventeen sons of Murray of Tullibardine, [who was] called Struan Murray. [The property] went to different names. This family has not been identified in parish records. John was father of:
- Donald? STEWART b: ABT 1770 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. This John left one son [with] a family of children [who are] all minors. He (the son or John?) is a smith where his father was. They were industrious well doing people.” He seems likely to be the following Donald Stewart found in the Appendix to Stewarts of the South: “Donald Stewart, [in] Strowan, [in the] united parish of Crieff and Strowan, of [the] Grandtully family, an industrious, well-doing man, on [the estate of] Capt Graham Stirling of Airth, a respectable good gentleman, Strowan estate, 40.”
James Stewart in Comrie
James STEWART b: ABT 1730 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, shown above as a son of James Stewart in Comrie. No birth record has been found for James. James is described in Stewarts of the South as: “James Stewart, [a] smith in Comrie, whose progenitors were from there for some generations back.” James is also mentioned in the Appendix to Stewarts of the South as: “James Stewart, vintner and smith [in] Comrie, of [the] Grandtully family, a good character, [on] Lord Viscount Melville’s Estate, (who pays rent of) 40.” There is no record of James’ first marriage as the Comrie parish clerk did not record any marriages at this time. James married firstly ABT 1759 to Ann MORISON b: ABT 1735. They had the following children:
- James STEWART b: ABT 19 MAR 1760 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. James is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South and is presumed to have died young.
- John STEWART b: ABT 09 AUG 1762 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. John is described in Stewarts of the South as: “John, a smith in Crieff, [with] a family of minors.” John is suggested by onomastics and geography to have married Jean MCEWAN (although no record of their marriage has been found) and had the following family:
- James STEWART b: ABT 01 JUL 1792 in Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland
- John STEWART b: ABT 04 MAR 1798 in Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland
- William STEWART b: ABT 17 JUN 1810 in Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland
- Peter STEWART b: ABT 23 DEC 1766 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. Peter is described in Stewarts of the South as: “Peter, a smith in Comrie, [with] a family of sons [who are] all minors.” Peter is suggested by onomastic and geographic association to have married on 5 DEC 1799 to Ann ROBERTSON and had the following family:
- James STEWART b: ABT 29 MAR 1800 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. James birth is double entered in the Comrie OPR on 27 APR 1800.
- Peter STEWART b: ABT 10 MAY 1802 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland
- George STEWART b: ABT 18 AUG 1804 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland
- Ann STEWART b: ABT 24 FEB 1807 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland
- John STEWART b: ABT 30 JUL 1809 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland
- Alexander STEWART b: ABT 26 AUG 1811 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland
- Elisabeth STEWART b: 14 SEP 1818 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. Elisabeth’s baptism is double-entered in the Comrie OPR on 15 NOV 1818.
- Alexander STEWART b: 21 JUL 1770 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland
- Helen STEWART b: 13 JUN 1773 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. According to a descendant tree submitted to Ancestry.com, Helen married Henry MCEWEN (not in IGI). Helen married to Henry MCEWEN b: ABT 02 FEB 1765 in Alloa, Clackmannan, Scotland, son of James McEwan and Margaret Angus (recorded as “Henry McQuan”). They had the following child:
- Andrew MCEWAN b: 1794 in Alloa, Clackmannan, Scotland. Andrew’s information comes from a descendant tree submitted to Ancestry.com. Andrew married on 26 MAR 1815 in Auchtermuchty, Fife, Scotland to Agnes HENDERSON b: ABT 1795 in Scotland. They had the following children:
- James MCEWAN b: ABT 1816 in Fife, Scotland. His descendants emigrated to Wellington, New Zealand.
- David MCEWAN b: 1818 in Fife, Scotland. David married in 1838 in Scotland to Mary NEISH b: ABT 1818 in Scotland.

Line 2 in Port of Menteith
This family is being discussed here: http://www.hostmybb.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=331&mforum=stewart
Stewarts of the South identifies another branch of the Grandtully family residing in Stewart of Balquhidder territory. They are described as cousins to the preceding line but their exact connection is not identified. They are described in Stewarts of the South as follows:
There is another branch of that family in Monteith that says that they are of the family of Garntully. They have been for a long time under the Lairds of Lendrick of the name of Haldane. [They are] a respectable family.
- John Stewart, [a] taxman of Portend of Menteith, in the Lordship of Menteith, now the Duke of Montrose’s estate, and a Laird of Property of One Hundred per annum and some thousands in cash. [He has] one son. It is a difficult matter for me to give his character, for at times you would think [him] friendly, but his chief aim is grasping at money, for the bottom of his mind is self and… [illegible]. Rent 25. He is a real contrast in nature.
- He has a brother, Robert, a tenant in the estate of Sir John Murray of Lendrick, formerly the Haldane’s [property], called Ruskie [in] Port [of Menteith] Parish. Rent 150. This Robert Stewart has seven sons:
- one of them is in the West Indies in opulent circumstances and sending home supplies to his father and [to] the rest of the family.
- Another son is a Major and farmer in Gartmore [in] Port [of Menteith] Parish. [He] has three sons [and pays] rent 20.
- One son, John, [is] a tenant in the Estate of Ramsay of Auchtertyre, now [the property of Henry] Dundas. [He is] a writer in Edinburgh. Rent 150. [He is] newly married.
- James, a tenant near his father in Sir John Murray’s Estate [in the] Barony of Rusgi (Ruskie) [in] Port [of Menteith].
- Patrick, [pays rent of] 120. [He has] two sons
- One of them a wright in Stirling, has two sons
- One of them [is] a saddler in Greenock [and is] unmarried.
John Stewart, a cousin of [the preceding family, is] a bachelor in Stirling in good circumstances.
[Another family consists of]
- One William Stewart, [a] tenant [in] Rosebank Moss [on] Blair Drummond’s [estate in] Kincardine Parish. Rent 50
- Peter, a brother of his, [is] a saddler in the West Indies
James Stewart, [a] maltman and farmer in Bochlive, in the estate of Graham of Gartmore, [in] Kippen parish. Rent 100. [He has] three sons.
It is not fair to be saying [uncertain, original is illegible], but the whole of them is a piece, save the saddler in the West Indies. This is the circle of my knowledge of them, but there may be more of them, but I think they are but few.
We account for this branch as follows:

The following Alexander Stewart is listed in the Appendix to Stewarts of the South and belongs to the preceding family (likely Line 1) but has not been identified as yet:
Alexander Stewart, [a] smith [in] Toman buie (Tom an buidhe), of [the] Grandtully family, an industrious well-doing man, on Lawer’s estate [of] Lord Balgray. [Balgray is] a real scourge of mankind and a depopulator of all his lands, and the country if he could. Monivard parish. 15
Robert STEWART of Buchany
Belinda has suggest that Robert could be the Robert Stewart, tacksman of Lendrick Castle, shown below as belonging to Invernahyle Branch 2, but he is too young to be that Robert and doesn’t fit as a son of that Robert.
Annat Line 4 also resided in Buchany and Burn of Cambus

Robert STEWART, of Buchany, b 1776 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland (according to his gravestone, although no birth record has been identified.) Mitchell’s MIs records Robert as a feuer in the village of Buchany. Census records show that Robert worked as a blacksmith in the village of Buchany and also in Burn of Cambus. Robert is listed in Mitchell’s MIs in Kilmadock cemetery: 203 “Robert STEWART feuar (at) Buchany 1776 (to) 1866, wife Agnes FORBES 1853, son James 1841 (age) 18, son John (a) blacksmith (at) Burn of Cambus died 6 SEP 1913, age 84 (and his wife Margaret BUCHANAN 31 JUL 1871, age 38, daughter Christina 8 MAY 1871, age 13, son Robert John died (at) Wester Coilechat 16 SEP 1929, age 61, daughter Agnes Forbes 1 DEC 1930, age 70 (widow of E. THOMSON), daughter Margaret Robina 9 DEC 1930, age 64).”
Robert Stewart married on 20 DEC 1822 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Agnes FORBES b: 1789 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following children:
- James STEWART b: 5 OCT 1823 in Buchany, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. James never married and died in 1841.
- Catharine STEWART b: 27 MAR 1826 in Burn of Cambus, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. She is found with her parents in Buchany in 1841 but not in 1851 and is presumed to have married between 1841-1851 to an unknown man.
- John STEWART b: 31 DEC 1828 in Burn of Cambus, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. John married on 21 NOV 1856 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret BUCHANAN b: 1833 in Scotland. They had the following family:

Robert married on 14 OCT 1857 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret Stewart DEWAR b: 15 APR 1831 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of James Dewar and Margaret Stewart (of the Stewarts of Lendrick). They had the following family:
- Robert STEWART b: 27 NOV 1858 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
- Margaret Stewart Dewar STEWART b: 5 MAY 1860 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
- James Dewar STEWART b: 12 DEC 1861 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
No promising match has been found for this family in Stewarts of the South. The fact that Robert is described as a feuer would suggest that he likely came from a landed family of some means (or that he was personally prosperous) thus we would expect to find an entry for him in Stewarts of the South. Robert’s gravestone would seem to imply that Agnes Forbes was his only wife, so it would appear that we can have confidence that James was his eldest son and there was probably no son from any previous marriage. Thus we may suggest that Robert’s father’s name was likely James. However no reasonable OPR match has been found for a Robert Stewart son of James born ca. 1776 in Kilmadock parish.

In 1851 this family is residing at the Kirkton of Strathfillin, Killin, Perthshire. Again, Janet is not found with the family.
However, what if Janet was previously married? The following family fits chronologically. Unfortunately, the fact that they only had one son renders it hard for us to identify Janet’s parents, unless their son Duncan’s second name, Robert, is a hint.

Stewarts in Auch, Cashlie and Ensay
http://www.hostmybb.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=258&mforum=stewart
Auch and Cashlie
From Fortingall: A Highland Parish:
After the ’15 and the ’45, considerable numbers of MacDonalds came from the north and settled in Glen Lyon
Auch and Achalader are not the same place. They are both in Glen Orchy with Auch being south of Achalader.
Stewart of Auch at the time of Stewarts of the South was Donald Stewart.
There is only one Stewart family in Auch in 1851:
Residence 1851: Auch, Ashintean, Glenorchy and Inishail, Argyll, Scotland
Margaret STEWART, b 1807 in Fortingall, shepherd’s wife
Janet STEWART, b 1827 in Fortingall, daughter
James STEWART, b 1850 in Glenorchy, Argyll, son (sic?, grandson?)
According to Ancestry’s census transcriptions there is no person surnamed Stewart residing in all of Glenorchy parish in 1841.
According to Mrs Stewart of Milton:
Charles Stewart who was in Auch about 1835, John Stewart in Cashlie about that time, Charles Stewarts (Tighn duin) father, and their grandmother of Blairchioch and the grandmother of the Braes of Balquhidder, their father was a cousin of the Stewarts of Ensay.
My grandmother (& great gd. Mother) was a sister of Cashlies. These three Stewarts were full cousins of my husband and through his mother, and were sons of a cousin of my fathers. Charles Stewart, Tighn duin, Killin, was also a cousin of these three brothers. His (Tighn duin) brothers owned Glencripisdale in Argyllshire, and married Miss Menzies of Chesthill. Their only child married a McGalloway and now lives about Aberfeldy. Tighn duin married his servant maid when an old man, went to England and left two children. His widow married an English Clergyman.
Cashlie is located Upper Glen Lyon, nw of Killin, w of Fortingall. Home of the McDonalds who were later in Monachyle. (See Glenogle page)
Cashlie Stewarts married McDonalds of Glen Lyon whose dtr Margaret married John Stewart Sr of Milton (Auchnahard family, father-in-law of Mrs Stewart of Milton)

Could this be the same Janet dtr of Charles and Margaret? Chronology doesn’t match.
Duncan STEWART and Janet STEWART in Lochearnhead. Married 09 JUL 1842 in Balquhidder. (This Duncan Stewart belongs to the family of Duncan Stewart in Edinample. Janet, b 1817 in Dull dtr of Charles Stewart and Margaret Robertson — confirmed by death cert.)
- Margaret Ann STEWART, bap. 29 MAY 1844 in Lochearnhead
- Duncan Robert STEWART, born 29 JUL 1845 and bap. 15 SEP 1845 in Lochearnhead. His father was recorded as “the late Duncan Stewart” at the time of this baptism.
Charles “Tigh’n Duin” is the Charles above b 25 DEC 1816. The three brothers who were his cousins would be sons of one of the sons of this family.
Margaret Stewart, b JUN 1768, “sister of Cashlie in Glenlyon” married John MacDonald, farmer in Blarcrioch (see Glenogle).
Archibald STEWART from Glen Lyon
Latterly in Doune
This family is being discussed here: http://www.hostmybb.com/phpbb/admin/index.php?mforum=stewart&sid=eab7b83d1b96a6f0ed3b691f74382d4f
The Stewarts in Cashlie and Auch had farms in Glen Lyon and were married to the Stewarts in Auchnahard. The Ensay family below had an Archibald Stewart who was contemporary with this one, who originated in Glen Lyon. The Ensay family were cousins to the Cashlie family. The map below shows the farms of Cashlie and Stronuich (Stronwick) were adjacent to each other. (Note: the other adjacent farm, Dalchiorlich, was home to the McNaughtans who later came to Comrie.
“Archibald/Gillespic?” STEWART, b ca 1720. Archibald/Gillespic’s real name is not know. His name is suggested from onomastics. According to family records “Archibald/Gillespic?” had a brother, Donald Stewart whose widow Margaret and children emigrated to near London, Ontario, Canada when Margaret was 90, where they were pioneer settlers.
- Margaret STEWART of Cashlie, b ca 1750 in Glen Lyon, Fortingall, Perthshire, Scotland. She married on 04 FEB 1776 in Fortingall, Perthshire, Scotland to Archibald MCDONALD of Monachyle. Archibald is said to have had a sister who married Archibald McDonald of Craigruie and Monachyle. Our McDonald of Monachyle records indicate that she would be Margaret Stewart.
- Archibald STEWART of Cashlie, b ca 1760. m 04 JUN 1797 in Glen Lyon, Fortingall, Perth, Scotland (baptisms are OPR entries, Stronwick comes from LDS entries) to Ann STEWART*** (Onomastics would suggest that Ann’s father was Duncan Stewart. Given this family’s later connections to Monachyle and Craigrui and given that Duncan, albeit a common name, was common in the family of the Stewarts of Glenogle and Monachyle, it seems reasonable to suggest that this Ann Stewart may have been a Stewart of Glen Ogle.)
- Archibald STEWART, bap 14 APR 1798 in Stronwick, Glen Lyon, Fortingall, Perthshire, Scotland
- Duncan STEWART, bap 1 JUL 1800 in Stronwick, Glen Lyon, Fortingall, Perthshire, Scotland. Duncan’s death registration reads: ” Death: 1864, no 18, Duncan Stewart, Dyke builder, married, died Dec 27th 4:30 pm, Doune, Kilmadock, age 66 years, parents: Archibald Stewart (deceased) and Anne Stewart ms [blank] (deceased), senile debility, informant Jane Stewart, dau-in-law.” This entry confirms Duncan’s parents despite the fact that his eldest documented son was named James. Duncan married on 28 JUL 1827 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Elisabeth CAMPBELL b 1805 in Killin, described as “both in this parish”. They had:
- Elizabeth STEWART, b/bap 15 OCT/8 DEC 1829 in Buchany, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland
- Margaret STEWART, b/bap 23 NOV/7 DEC 1831 in Buchany, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland. d unm 1916 (LDS)
- James STEWART, b/ap 30 MAR/16 APR 1834 in Buchany, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland

- Mary STEWART, b 1848 in Doune
- Archibald STEWART, bap 17 JUN 1802 in Stronwick, Glen Lyon, Fortingall, Perthshire, Scotland
- John STEWART, bap 22 APR 1804 in Stronwick, Glen Lyon, Fortingall, Perthshire, Scotland (may have married Janet Campell and resided in Buchany). Family records indicate that John, along with his brother Angus, and their families, emigrated to southwestern Ontario, Canada and settled near London (consistent with the reference to Nairn below.)
- Betty STEWART, bap 25 MAR 1806 in Stronwick, Glen Lyon, Fortingall, Perthshire, Scotland

Ensay & Luskintyre
The Stewarts of Ensay and Luskintyre are not descended from the Stewarts of Balquhidder. However, they are mentioned in the genealogy of Mrs Stewart of Milton in her accounting of the Stewarts in Glen Finglas, as follows:
Archibald Stewart of Ensay in 1809 & his brother Donald Stewart of Luskintyre, he married Mess MacRae. They had
- W. Stewart of Kirkmichael who died in 1887 aged 71 who was the representative of Gen. Stuart of Garth.
- John of Ensay, born at Luskintyre 1825 in Fludigarry in 1845, buried at Luskintyre. He had two sons
- Donald
- William
We are constructing an outline of the Stewarts of Ensay and Luskintyre only for the purpose of differentiating their cadets from the Stewarts of Glen Finglas and also determining their relationship to the McDonalds in Monachyle.
William Acton recently sent us the following genealogy of the Stewarts in Luskintyre:
- Robert II
|
Alexander ‘Wolf of Badenoch’
|
John 4th son. Progenitor of the Athole Stewarts
|
Neil Stewart of Garth
|
Stewart of Overblaris of whom Crossmount. Duntanlich and Stewart of Drumchary.
|
| (Blank)
|
(1) Alexander (believed to be)
|
(2) Robert
|
(3) James
|
(4) James
|
(5) Robert
|
(6) John = widow of Mengies of Coshville. Daughter of Neil Stewart of Sheerglass
| an officer of the Athole Highlanders who was killed at Culloden.
(7) William = Anne MacDonald of Monochyle.
|
(8) Donald = Is. MacRae. Torlishich- John Stewart of Ensay = Jessie MacRae
- William. Major A. & S. Highlanders. Died unmarried.
Ensay is a small isle in the Sound of Harris and formerly belonged to the lairds of Harris; about 500 acres. Belonged to the “improving Campbells” of Ensay and then after 1856 to Archibald Stewart of Luskentyre (Lord Dunmore’s factor).
This Stewart family was later “powerfully represented” at Ensay, Duntulm, and Bochastle.
Before settling in Luskintyre, Donald and his brother were in Lewis on Park Farm where they were ruthless evictors of crofters. Donald began as a hired shepherd from Appin, became manager of the farm for The Skye Group and later became tenant and “prospered so well that he moved to a more promising location on the North Harris estate.” He expanded his holdings at the expense of Macleod of Harris and secured farms for his friends and relatives.
John STEWART 6th of Luskintyre, m widow of Mengies (Menzies?) of Coshville. Daughter of Neil Stewart of Sheirglass
- William STEWART, 7th of Luskintyre married on 6 DEC 1770 to Ann MCDONALD of Monachyle (daughter of Donald McDonald of Glen Lyon by an unknown woman and sister of Archibald McDonald of Monachyle who married William’s sister Mary Stewart below). Said to descend from Alasdair Mor mac an Righ (“Big Alex, son of the King”), a.k.a. The Wolf of Badenoch, son of King Robert II. His sons were known collectively as “Gillian Ruadh na Pairc” (“The red-haired men of Park”). They were responsible for ruthlessly evicting over thirty crofter townships.
- Donald STEWART, 8th of Luskintyre, bap 16 SEP 1774 in Fortingall. Acquired Luskintyre in 1809, previously on a “Lewis farm in 1802”. Called “Stewart of the Black Isle”. Res 1841 in Luskintyre, Harris, Inverness, Scotland, occ “farmer”. Married 29 MAR 1804 in Glenshiel, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland to Isabella MCRAE of Torlishich, b 1786 in Scotland (outside Harris) dtr of Donald MacRae of Cluanie in the Heights of Kintail and Margaret MacRae, dtr of Alexander MacRae of Ardintoul. (Children shown here are as given in “The History of Clan Macrae”, p 218-219)
- John STEWART, of Pabbay and latterly of Ensay, shown in Macrae as the eldest son, but shown in census records as b 1825, Luskintyre, Harris, Inverness, Scotland. John of Ensay, born at Luskintyre 1825 in Fludigarry in 1845, buried at Luskintyre. “now of Ensay, married in 1849 to Jessy Macrae dtr of Donald Macrae of Auchtertyre (Donald b 1775 at Auchtertyre, d 15 NOV 1843, buried at Kirkton) and his wife Jane Macra dtr of Archibald Macra of Ardintoul, with issue already mentioned (p175).” Jessy died 26 OCT 1860
- Jane Macrae STEWART
- William STEWART, “a Captain in the 91st Highlanders”
- Isabella Christian STEWART, m in 1882 to Gordon Fraser and had issue
- Mary STEWART, died 1891.
- Donald Alexander STEWART, married in 1894 to Isabella Mary Anderson, with issue including a daughter, Mary.
- Jessy Chisholm STEWART, married in 1888 to Thomas Scott.
- Archibald STEWART, died in childhood.
- Donald STEWART, “died unmarried.”
- William STEWART, initially of Ensay “died unmarried.” b 1816. Recorded by Mrs Stewart of Milton as “W. Stewart of Kirkmichael who died in 1887 aged 71 who was the representative of Gen. Stuart of Garth.” (Ironic, given the General’s revulsion towards Highland Clearers.)
- Robert STEWART, “died unmarried.”
- Alexander STEWART, “married Anne, daughter of Captain Mackenzie.” of Killigary, b ca 1818?

James Stewart, Clockmaker in Glasgow 1778-1799
Mrs Stewart of Milton’s 1907 account mentions:
There were two Stewart families in Grodich. The earlier family are those who eventually went to Aberdeen. The latter went to Strathyre — of this family was John who was nearly 100 when he died.
Of the Grodich Stewarts who left Grodich and came to Auchnahard, there were three of the name of John in succession grandfather, father and son. That family eventually went to Aberdeen and became wine merchants there.
Frenich
www.multimap.com
Walter Stewart (Frangich) was in Glenfinlas. He married an Aberdeenshire woman McNab. He was of the first Grodichs.” The family of the “first Grodichs” was the family above.
Note: “Frangich” is Gaelic for “French speaker”, but it is also the name of a settlement (“Frenich”) on Loch Chon south of Loch Katrine. She says later,
“Walter Frangich was probably related to Walter in Edralechan as I understand he was a cousin of my mother’s. James of this family was a clockmaker in Glasgow.
Walter Frangich had two sons who went to Aberdeen. Their names were, I think, Walter and Charles. Their mother was a MacNab and came from Aberdeenshire.
Walter is described in Stewarts of the South as: “There is also another brother of the real (Gartnafuaran) family and is nearest to the above mentioned Walter (10th of Gartnafuaran); [he is] a tenant in Glenfinglas — one of the eight tenants of the name of Stewart — and pays a rent of one hundred guineas. This person is rather a silly indolent man, and, however, has some abilities, but cannot make any use of them, either for himself or family. [He] is married to a very genteel woman from Aberdeenshire. [He] has three sons [who are] under age.”
And also as: “Mr Walter Stewart, Auchnahard [in] Glenfinglas, of the first branch of Gartnafuaran family, but very [illegible] them, an indifferent character to be so near the head of a family. £105. Earl of Murray’s property. Unjustly turned out since this was wrote.” (ca. 1815, the same time that the family moved to Aberdeen.)
Walter STEWART in Grodich married on 19 JAN 1768 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Kathrine MCNAB
- Margaret STEWART, b/b 20/22 JUN 1776 in Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
1776, Donald STEWART and Cath: MCNAB both in this parish (Callander) were listed March 30th and got extract to be married April 9th
- Walter Frangich STEWART, b/b 8/10 MAY 1777 in Auchnahaird, Glen Finglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland (parents given as Donald Stewart and Kath. MacNab in OPR) He married Elizabeth Robertson from Kinellar, Aberdeen and had children:
- Donald, 1807 in Auchnahard
- Charles, 1809 in Auchnahard
- unknown, and
- Margaret, 1820 in Kinellar, Aberdeen.
Walter is described in Stewarts of the South as: “There is also another brother of the real family and is nearest to the above mentioned Walter; [he is] a tenant in Glenfinglas — one of the eight tenants of the name of Stewart — and pays a rent of one hundred guineas.
Unjustly turned out since this was wrote.”
The account of Mrs. Stewart of Milton says, “There were two Stewart families in Grodich. The earlier family are those who eventually went to Aberdeen. The latter went to Strathyre — of this family was John who was nearly 100 when he died. Walter Stewart (Frangich) was in Glenfinlas. He married an Aberdeenshire woman McNab. He was of the first Grodichs.”
Clan MacNab records indicate that Catharine MacNab, daughter of Donald MacNab of Braeleny, married firstly to a Stewart, by whom she had one son before her husband died. The son lived in Kinellar, Aberdeenshire, in 1820 with his family and an uncle, Alexander Stewart, when MacNab relatives from France came for a documented visit. They were referred to as “The French MacNabs.”
Both the Stewarts of the South and Clan MacNab accounts can be easily reconciled with OPR and census records showing this Walter Stewart marrying Elizabeth Robertson from Kinellar, Aberdeenshire, and beginning their family in Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Scotland and later moving to Kinellar, Aberdeenshire.
Walter’s birth shown here matches geographically, chronologically, and onomastically.
James Stewart is listed as clockmaker in Trongate, Glasgow 1778-1799. There is a Robert Stewart, clockmaker, in Trongate, Glasgow in 1841. The two of them are featured together in an article in a clock-making magazine from the 1980s, but only the index is available on-line so I can get no further details. I would suggest that Robert is likely the son of James however I have not been able to identify either of them in any census or OPR records.

If James Stewart (Sr) was apprenticing with James Leckie in 1778 then we can suggest a birth date for James Stewart ca. 1755-60. This would make him the perfect age to have a son, John in 1786 and possibly sons Robert and Allan about the same time. No trace of Allan can be found in census records and Robert is not found post-1841, suggesting that they may have died with no evidence of sons.

In 1851 there is a James Stewart b1828 in Kilmadock, residing in Calton, Lanark with his parents James & Catharine both aged 48. There is only one James Stewart born in Kilmadock with parents James and Catharine 1820-1840 and that being James Stewart son of this couple. Thus it would appear that it must be the right son, James. But the parents James and Catharine are far too young to have married in 1812. Thus, it seems that the ages of James Sr. and his wife Catharine must be either incorrectly recorded or transcribed.

This family is being discussed here: http://www.hostmybb.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=2293&mforum=stewart#2293
This family originates with the following Robert Stewart who claims to have been born about 1792 in Balquhidder. His death certificate gives his parents as Duncan Stewart and Janet Stewart. No corresponding birth record has been found. However a matching couple can be found having children in Balquhidder at that time, namely Duncan Stewart and Janet Stewart in Auchleskine. They can be found here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rykbrown/stewart_of_glenbuckie_branch_ix.htm . In order for Robert to belong to this family he would have to be illegitimate and unrecorded. The other problem is that this family is found later in the 1814 Moss Census with no mention of any illegitimate son, Robert. So it’s a problematic match. At this point we are unable to confidently identify Robert’s origin and which branch of which family he might belong to.
Robert STEWART, b ca. 1791 (according to the 1841 census) or 1792 (1851) or 1785 (according to his death certificate) in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. The 1851 census indicates that Robert was born in Balquhidder, however his death certificate says he was born in Comrie. The census is presently preferred as this information presumably came from Robert himself and was given during his lifetime, whereas the death certificate information comes from his son. Robert’s death certificate in Australia also indicates that his parents’ names were Duncan Stewart and Janet Stewart. No corresponding birth record has been found for Robert. Robert married on 7 DEC 1825 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland to Mary MCCALLUM, b 30 OCT 1793 in Killin Perthshire, Scotland, daughter of John McCallum and Janet Clark. In 1841 the family was residing in Duchruin, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland where Robert was employed as a shepherd. In 1851 the family was residing in Ducheran (sic Duchruin), Glenartney, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland where Robert was employed as a shepherd. Duchruin has been identified as am extinct property in Glen Artney formerly located adjacent to Dalchruin. This family immigrated to Australia in 1852 aboard the ship, Miltiades. Listed on the ship’s register is Robert Stewart, 58, Mary Stewart, 48, Duncan Stewart, 21, Janet Stewart, 18, Robert Stewart, 14, John Stewart, 5. Note that daughter Margery is not present. Mary McCallum died 23 OCt 1885 in Victoria, Australia. Her death certificate records her parents names as “John McCallum and Mother not known.” Her son Robert Stewart was the informant. It also lists her children as Marjory – dead, Duncan – dead, Jessie – dead, Robert – age 47, John – age 45.
- Marjory/Margery STEWART, bap 6 JUL 1828 in Wester Dundurn, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland (mother spelled “McAllum”). She is found only in 1841 with her family. Margery married on 6 DEC 1849 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Walter MCBEATH, b 1830 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. In 1851 Margery was residing in Lagrannoch, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland (as Marjory Macbeth) with her 1 year old son, Robert and a 50 year old Mary Dochart, born 1801 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, with no relationship given. Walter is believed to be the Walter Mcbeth found in 1851 residing in Bridge of Michael, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland employed as a Mason’s labourer and lodging with the family of Catharine Mcpherson. It is believed the children died and that Walter and Margery are the same people as the Walter and Margery McBeth who emigrated to Australia as assisted immigrants in 1852, arriving at Geelong, Victoria on 5 JAN 1853 on the ship James T Foord from Liverpool. This suggestion is supported by the fact that none of the members of this family are found in the 1861 Scotland census. There are no other McBeths on the ship, so it appears their sons did not accompany them. Margery died 3 DEC 1873 in Victoria, Australia, recorded as a labourer’s wife, age 45 years, daughter of Robert Stewart, farmer, and Mary Stewart (maiden surname McCullum), husband Walter Mcbeath, from Perthshire, Scotland having resided in Victoria for 21 years, with children: Mary – 19 years, Janet – 17 years, Margery – 15 years, Alexander – 13 years, John – deceased (illegible) years, Phoebe – 5 years, Robert & Duncan (twins) – 3 years. Marjory and Walter had the following children:
- Robert MCBEATH, b 28 FEB 1850 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland. Robert is found in 1851 as an infant residing with his mother in Lagrannoch, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. The 1851 census gives his place of birth as Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. He did not emigrate with his parents and is presumed to have died as a young child.
- Walter MCBEATH, b 24 AUG 1851 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland. He died not emigrate with his parents. He is presumed to have died in infancy.
- Mary MCBEATH, b 1854 in Victoria, Australia.
- Janet MCBEATH, b 1856 in Victoria, Australia.
- Margery MCBEATH, b 1858 in Victoria, Australia.
- Alexander MCBEATH, b 1860 in Victoria, Australia.
- John MCBEATH, b ca. 1863 in Victoria, Australia.
- Phoebe MCBEATH, b 1868 in Victoria, Australia.
- Robert MCBEATH (twin), b 1870 in Victoria, Australia.
- Duncan MCBEATH (twin), b 1870 in Victoria, Australia.
- Duncan STEWART, b 21 SEP/14 OCT 1830 in Claharn? (sic – The original transcriber notes that the entry was difficult to believe. We believe it to to be a miss-read of “Duchraw” a.k.a. Duchruin.), Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Although Duchruin is located in Comrie parish this baptism is registered in Callander likely because Callander was easier to get to from Upper Glen Artney. Duncan was residing with his parents in 1841 and 1851. He was employed as a shepherd in 1851. He immigrated to Australia with his parents in 1852.
- Jessie/Janet STEWART, b 13/30 JUL 1833 in Duchraw (Duchruin), Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Although Duchruin is located in Comrie parish this baptism is registered in Callander likely because Callander was easier to get to from Upper Glen Artney. She was residing with her parents in 1841 and 1851. She immigrated to Australia with her parents in 1852. Five years later, in 1857, Jessie died giving birth to an illegitimate child (father unknown). The child died a few days later.
- Robert STEWART, b 1837 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. No birth record has been found for Robert. He was residing with his parents in 1841 only. In 1851 Robert was residing at 46 West End Callander, Callander town, Callander parish, Perthshire, Scotland, employed as a servant in the household of Donald McLaren, a wool merchant, born 1786 in Balquhidder and his daughter, Mary, born 1803 in Balquhidder. (The only matching birth is Mary McLaren, b 18 MAY 1803 in Callander, dtr of Donald McLaren and Jean McMillan.) Robert immigrated to Australia with his parents in 1852.
- John STEWART, b 3 NOV/13 DEC 1838 in Duchaw (Duchruin), Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Although Duchruin is located in Comrie parish this baptism is registered in Callander likely because Callander was easier to get to from Upper Glen Artney. John was residing with his parents in 1841 only. He has not been found in 1851. He immigrated to Australia with his parents in 1852.
Visiting with the family in 1851 is
Jonathan MCDONALD, b 1813 in Callander, a shoemaker
Duncan CAMERON, b 1819 in Comrie, formerly a gamekeeper
There was also another Stewart family on the same ship in 1852: William Stewart, 29, Margaret Stewart, 28, John Stewart, 5, Christine Stewart, 2, William Stewart, 1. It is not known if they were related or if this is mere coincidence. Current research leads us to believe this family came from Argyll and were not related.
Local historian, Peter McNaughton, says that “Duchrin” is the correct identification for the residence of this family, and that Duchrin is either identical with Dalchruin or forms part of the same settlement. This is supported by census information which shows Duchruin as being enumerated consecutive with Dalchruin.
The Comrie OPR has a NN (male) STEWART bap 14 NOV 1823 in Comrie, son of Robert Stewart with no mother given. The only other Robert Stewart having children in the Comrie OPR at that time was Robert Stewart in Moral (Stewarts of Dalveich Branch VII) and this entry does not appear to belong to that family.

William Stewart and Mary Loftus in West Flamborough, Ontario, Canada
This family is being discussed here: http://www.hostmybb.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=2433&mforum=stewart#2433
The following William Stewart was born in 1804 in Perthshire, Scotland, according to his 1883 gravestone in Ayton, Normanby Township, Grey County, Ontario, Canada. A male-line descendant of this family shows DNA results that are consistent with descendants of the Stewarts of Balquhidder, however we are unable to be any more precise than that at this time.
William STEWART, b. 1804 in Perthshire, Scotland (according to his headstone). Residing in 1842 in West Flamborough, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada and died 25 DEC 1883 in Ayton, Normanby Township, Grey County, Ontario, Canada. He married on 20 JAN 1846 in St. Augustine’s Parish Roman Catholic Church, Dundas, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada to Mary LOFTUS, b. 1822 in Sligo, Ireland and died aft 1881 in Minnesota, USA(?). Although William married a Roman Catholic and had all his children baptized and raised as Roman Catholics, census records show that he remained a Presbyterian his whole life and did not convert. William’s headstone indicates that he came from Perthshire, Scotland. A search of extant Perthshire birth records for potential matches reveals only one viable candidate:
William STEWART, bap 9 SEP 1804 in Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland, only child registered to James STEWART and Margaret STEWART residing at the Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland. No marriage record has been found.
The preceding birth record matches geographically, chronologically and onomastically with what we presently know of William, however we have insufficient information to confirm whether or not this is William’s actual birth. A search has been conducted for other Stewarts living nearby in West Flamborough in the hope of possibly identifying relatives of William in order to more accurately identify is place of origin within Perthshire. Several neighbouring Stewart families have been found, however none of these can be traced with confidence back to Perthshire. As frustrating as this result is, it actually lends some support to the possibility that the above birth could be correct. If William was an only child then we should not expect to find him living with or near siblings in Canada.
Census records below suggest that William’s wife, Mary Loftus, was previously married to a McGowan (possibly Robert McGowan) and had three children by him (Bridget, John and Thomas) before being widowed ca. 1844-1845 and then married secondly to William Stewart as indicated above.
In 1851 William is found residing in West Flamborough, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada with his birth mistakenly given as 1814. He is shown with the following family:

Research Leads
The following birth from Perthshire matches chronologically and onomastically, but there is insufficient evidence to be confident that it is this William’s birth family:
James STEWART and Margaret STEWART residing at the Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland. No identifiable marriage record has been found. They had only the following child:
- William STEWART, bap 9 SEP 1804 in Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland. He is the only child registered to this couple.
The following marriages may be connected to the McGowans above:

Donald Stewart in Edinample was from Comrie parish, not Balquhidder. See Balquhidder OPR marriage to correct this error.
