The Stewarts of Lendrick, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland

Descendant Line IVa of the Stewarts of Annat

Origin of the Stewarts of Lendrick

The Stewarts of Lendrick and the later Stewarts of Glassingall descend from Archibald Stewart, youngest son of Alexander Stewart, 1st of Annat. Duncan Stewart (1739) says “Alexander, who purchased the lands of Annat… had John, Walter, Andrew and James. He had likewise Archibald, great-grandfather to Alexander Stewart of Glassingall, writer in Stirling.” From this, we can determine determine that Alexander Stewart of Glassingall, who was alive in 1739, was the great-grandson of Archibald Stewart, younger son of Alexander Stewart, 1st of Annat.

Stewarts of Annat line 4

Stewarts of the South gives us an accounting of the Lendrick Stewarts circa 1820, as shown below, but it does not mention the Stewarts of Glassingall as they were extinct by 1820. The Stewarts of Lendrick are shown as Line 4 of the Stewarts of Annat, as follows:

1. Donald Stewart, son to Archibald Stewart, tacksman of Lendrick, a purchase of Sir Patrick Murray from Perth family, Callander parish, has one son and pays £330 of rent.

2. Hugh Stewart, uncle to the foregoing Donald Stewart, tacksman of the Carse of Camus, near Down (Doune) Lodge, Earl’s estate. Rent £100. He left five sons:

a. James, a tenant there with

1. one son.

b. John, a merchant vintner and farmer in the village of Kippen, Stirlingshire. He has four sons:

1-4. One of them is a surgeon in Glasgow, and the rest are at home – not this one, a writer, the third is a merchant in Glasgow, and the fourth at home. (It is uncertain what the author means by “the rest are at home” as the third son is in Glasgow, not at home.)

c. Alexander Stewart, a merchant in Glasgow with

1. one son.

d. Hugh Stewart, a wright in Glasgow with

1. sons, but I am not certain of their number.

e. Archibald, a wright in Stirling, with

1. a family of sons, but of their number I am not certain.

The Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856)

In 1849, the heritability of the estate of Glassingall was in question. An ultimus haeres (ultimate heir) court hearing was held to determine the rightful heir of the estate. 18 claimants vied for the estate and most submitted family trees in evidence. These are found in the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856). The multiple family trees submitted in evidence provide us with valuable information on the early generations of the Stewarts on Lendrick.

Descendant Branches

The following families descend from the Stewarts of Lanrick and are presented on their own pages.

Lendrick

Lendrick is located on the north shore of Loch Venachar, just east of Brig O’ Turk. Today it is known as Lendrick Lodge Holistic Retreat Centre.

There is also a Lendrick in the nearby parish of Dunblane located between the village of Dunblane and the Glassingall estate. It is shown on Stobies Map (1783) as Lendrick and on modern maps as Landrick and is now part of the town of Dunblane. It is unrelated to this family’s residence.

There is also a Lendrick on the south bank of the River Teith, roughly between Buchany/Burn of Cambus and Drumvaich. Stobies 1783 map shows its name as Lendrick along with nearby Middle Lendrick. Modern maps show an Upper Lanrick near the site of the former Lanrick Castle. It is situated in Kilmadock parish near the border with Callander parish and appears in both parish registers. It seems to be referred to as Lendrick in the Kilmadock register and Lanrick in the Callander register, perhaps to differentiate it from the Lendrick on Loch Venachar. It is believed to have been an earlier residence of this family prior to the mid-17th century.

Archibald Stewart, Predecessor to the Stewarts of Lendrick and Glassingall

Archibald Stewart, Predecessor of Lendrick and Glassingall,   b. Abt 1595, Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN. Archibald was the youngest son of Alexander mac Iain Stewart, in Glen Finglas 2nd of Portnellan and 1st of Annat, and Daughter MacNab, of Aucharn.

Duncan Stewart (1739) says: “Alexander, who purchased the lands of Annat from James Muschet of Burnbank anno 1621. He married ___ MacNab, daughter to Aucharn, by whom he had John, Walter, Andrew and James. He had likewise Archibald, great-grandfather to Alexander Stewart of Glassingall, writer in Stirling.”

Children

Archibald had the following children (and possibly unknown others) by an unknown wife.

1. John Oig mac Gillespic Stewart, in Lanrick, b. Abt 1620, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, d. 1662, Lanrick, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland (Age ~ 42 years)

His information is presented below.

2. Duncan Stewart, b. Abt 1625, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN

John Oig mac Gillespic Stewart in Lanrick had a brother named Duncan as established by his testament and we know that Duncan was still alive in 1662 when John died. (See notes on John for more information.) Duncan’s date of birth is unknown and is estimated here. It is presumed that Duncan was younger than John as he outlived John.

John Oig mac Gillespic Stewart in Lanrick? (speculative)

John Oig mac Gillespic Stewart, in Lanrick,   b. Abt 1620, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. 1662, Lanrick, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location  (Age ~ 42 years). John MAY be a son of Archibald Stewart, Predecessor to the Stewarts of Lendrick and Glassingall, shown above.

John Stewart, by his wife, Janet Graham,   b. 1606,   d. UNKNOWN,

Gordon MacGregor (The Red Book of Scotland) cautions that all that can be concluded for certain from documentary evidence is that Archibald Stewart, Predecessor of the Stewarts of Lendrick and Glassingall, shown above, was the grandfather of Capt. Archibald Stewart in Annat, shown below. Any attempt to fill in the intervening generation is speculative at this point. (personal correspondence)

We know that Archibald Stewart (b. ca. 1595), above, son of Alexander mac Iain Stewart, 1st of Annat, was said to be the ancestor of the later Stewarts of Lendrick and Glassingall. The Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856) confirm that Capt. Archibald Stewart in Annat (b. 1647) was the father of John Stewart, 1st of Lendrick (b. 1680) and Alexander Stewart, 1st of Glassingall (b. 1685). Thus, these two Archibald Stewarts are separated by only one intervening generation. That is, the earlier Archibald Stewart (above), son of Alexander mac Iain Stewart, 1st of Annat, must be the grandfather of the later Capt. Archibald Stewart in Annat (below).

Onomastics would suggest that the father of Capt. Archibald Stewart in Annat (below) was most likely named John. And we can estimate that this John would have been born around 1620. As Archibald Stewart, Predecessor of the Stewarts of Lendrick and Glassingall (above), was the grandson of John Stewart, 1st of Portnellan), then it would not be surprising that Archibald might have a son named John. So an intervening son named John would fit as the son of Archibald Stewart, Predecessor of the Stewarts of Lendrick and Glassingall, above, and the father of Capt. Archibald Stewart in Annat, below.

There is a John Stewart whose testament is registered in the Dunblane Commissariat Records as: “4 Dec 1662 and 18 Dec 1662; Stewart, John Oig M`Gillespick, in Lanrick, par of Callander.” His patronymic means “Young John, son of Archibald.” We do not know when he was born, but given his death in 1662, he is in the right range to have been born ca. 1620. We also know he lived at Lanrick. It is unclear if Lanrick refers to Lendrick on Loch Venachar, the later residence of this family, or Lanrick near Doune.

We cannot prove that John Oig mac Gillespic Stewart in Lanrick, Callander, found in the testament is the intervening John Stewart. However, he is the right age, living in the right place, and bearing the same name with the right patronymic.

John’s testament indicates that died in August “or thereby last bypast” which, as the Testament was confirmed on 18 December 1662, would be of that year.

It was initially given up by Mungo Campbell, brother to John Campbell of Clathick, as executor dative surrogate in place of the procurator fiscal but then by Duncan Stewart, John’s brother german, as executor dative ad omissa as creditor on the basis of John, at the time of his death, owing to Duncan the sum of “four score merks Scots” (80 merks) principal plus an additional £8 “liquidate expenses” contained in a Bond (loan) between them dated 13 March 1662.

John’s effects didn’t amount to much “twele boll black corne quilk the defunct had in steilbow upon the land of Nether Achry” and two cows.

The Testament was confirmed at Dunblane, on 18 December 1662.

In terms of points of genealogy, John’s patronymic is useful as it identifies his father as Archibald and it also identifies a brother german (useful inclusion of the term for full brother especially when multiple wives or husbands with same surnames wasn’t uncommon) and that he died in or about August 1662. Although no children are mentioned that wasn’t uncommon when Testaments were made up by creditors. Only by inclusions of phrases such as “given up by ______ as nearest of kin to ye defunct” can death without issue be conclusively proved. (Extraction and commentary provided by Gordon MacGregor.)

The 1650 Valuation Roll for Dunblane Parish lists Mr. James? Drummond in possession of a portion of Glassingall which came into this Stewart family’s possession two generations later.

The Testament of John Oig mac Gillespic Stewart (ca. 1620-1662)

Children

John Oig mac Gillespic Stewart is presumed to have married Janet Graham,   b. 1606,   d. UNKNOWN, although no record of their marriage has been found. They may have had the following children (and possibly unknown others):

1. Capt Archibald Stewart, in Annat, b. Abt 3 Jan 1647, Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, d. 10 Jul 1732, Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland (Age ~ 85 years)

His information is presented below.

2. John? Stewart, b. Abt 1650, Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN

2. John? Stewart,   b. Abt 1650, Annat, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN.

John’s existence is uncertain. He is inferred from the following baptismal record in which it is suggested that he may be the “John Stewart in Annat” witnessing the baptism. No other contemporary John Stewart has been identified who could be this mystery witness. The fact that Archibald Stewart in Annat was the son of a John Stewart makes it likely that he would have had a brother named John Stewart. No other evidence has been found to support the existence of this John.

Register of Baptisms 5 June 1712 “[Archibald] son to John Stewart and Isabel McFarlane in Ballacaish wit. John Stewart and Archibald Stewart in Annat.” (Extracted from the Parish Records of Kilmadock.)

If correct, then there are multiple candidates for the possible birth of this John, most obviously:
Johne Stewart, born 18/10/1646 in Kilmadock parish, son of Johne Stewart.
Johne Stewart, born 16/8/1646 in Kilmadock parish, son of Johne Stewart.

Caution: "Wishful Linking" Alert -- Capt. Archibald Stewart and Helen Law never had a son John who was a Colonel in Virginia

Capt. Archibald Stewart and Helen Law did have a son named John Stewart, but he was not a Colonel and he did not immigrate to Virginia, USA. See below for details.

Gordon MacGregor (The Red Book of Scotland) urges caution in putting any faith in the suggested birth of Archibald Stewart as being 3 Jan 1647. (personal correspondence)

According to Archibald’s gravestone he was 75 years old when he died in 1732, which would make his birth year 1657, not 1647, however we know that ages on gravestones are often approximate and unreliable. Based on the nams of his children, we should expect that his father’s name would be John, which is a common name among the Annat branches, However, onomastics are not reliable on their own.

Assuming that his birth was recorded in the Kilmadock OPR (which is far from certain in the 17th century) then there are only two Archibald Stewarts listed:

  • Archibald Stewart born 23/5/1677 son of James
  • Archibald Stewart born 3/1/1647 son of Johne

Unfortunately, there are no locations given for either of these births. The Kilmadock OPR is woefully lacking in detail until the early 18th century.

The 1647 birth is preferred based solely on onomastics and the fact that it is closest in age to when Archibald is believed to have been born. But this is not confirmed.

Firm knowledge of this branch begins with knowing that Captain Archibald Stewart resided in a house on the Annat property. He was a second cousin of the contemporary laird of Annat, Alexander Stewart, 4th of Annat. He is frequently recorded in online genealogies incorrectly as “Archibald Stewart of Annat.”

Archibald’s mother’s name is not given in the OPR. Archibald was a farmer in Annat.

Archibald is listed in Mitchell’s Monumental Inscriptions for Kilmadock cemetery:

283b 1732. Archibald STEWART, tenant in Annat, died 10 JUL 173[5], age 75, wife Helen LAW, also interred here, son Robert tenant in Annat, died 1776 age 70 (his wife Agnes Galbraith died same year and month aged [61 or 64], daughter Margaret 16 DEC 1822, age 71 (and her husband, Duncan FERGUSON, feuar (at) Doune). (Mitchell notes: see Kilmadock OPR – they also had a son, Archibald, bap 1747). Duncan FERGUSON, 1 JAN 1798, age 66, interred (at) Callander, their son Alexander merchant (in) Lancaster, died there 5 JAN 1815, age 56, Archibald, born JUN 1784, died age 18 months, Duncan born NOV 1786, died 1789, William merchant (in) Lancaster, died there 22 SEP 1819, age 30. (on pedestal) AS HL.

Archibald is mentioned repeatedly throughout the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856) and is the progenitor of every family tree submitted in evidence. In nearly every instance he is incorrectly referred to as having been the laird of Annat in his time and the debate centres around whether his son John was lawful or natural. However, there is no indication in any other sources that Archibald was laird of Annat, but rather, merely a senior tenant in Annat. As the estate of Annat was in flux during this period, it’s possible there’s more to this than we currently know.

Robert Stewart of Ardvorlich submitted the following testimony to the Glassingall dispute:

“Declares that he has often heard it stated both by his father and by other parties members of the Annat family, that the Stewarts of Glassingall were illegitimately descended from the Stewarts of Annat and he believes their descent arose from Archibald Stewart of Annat and the Great grandfather of Alexander Stewart first of Glassingall. Declares that he has also heard it stated and believes it to be true that the descendants of this Archibald were settled as tenants in a farm upon the estate of Annat and that a branch of the family was afterwards removed and settled in Landrick where they co-tenanted until the death of the late Archibald Stewart some months ago.”

Robert Stewart of Ardvorlich’s account seems to be accurate and is in agreement with the account given by Duncan Stewart (1739) as well as OPR data and other sources, and is the version we have presented here. The other Glassingall estate claimants were mistakenly confusing Archibald as being “of Annat” rather than “in Annat.” The claim that the Lendrick, Ballacaish and Glassingall families all descend from an illegitimate branch is persistent, and seems more correctly presented in Ardvorlich’s account, rather than the others. It appears more likely that it was not Archibald’s son, John, who may have been illegitimate, but, rather, his father, John, son of Archibald, younger of Annat. With the repetition of the names John, son of Archibald, in consecutive generations the confusion and conflation is understandable when viewed from several generations later.

Archibald Stewart and Helen Law had the following children:

1. John Stewart, 1st of Ballacuaich and Lendrick, b. Abt 3 Nov 1680, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, d. 1740, Lendrick, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland (Age ~ 59 years)

Robert is identified in the Kilmadock OPR as being “in Annat” and sometimes even “of Annat.”

Robert is listed in Mitchel’s Monumental Inscriptions with his father, Archibald:

283b 1732. McInnes Stewart, another descendant of Archibald of Landrick, offers the following testimony in the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856): “As for the settlement of 1777 in which Archibald calls on the failure of his sister and their issue (sic), Archibald and William, the lawful sons of his uncle Robert Stewart…” From this testimony it would appear that Archibald and William were the only sons of Robert to reach adulthood and that neither had descendants.

John married to Isobell McFarlane, in Coilachra,   b. Abt 1680, Coilachra, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN.

John Stewart is recorded in the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856) as initially of Ballacuaich (Ballacaish) and later of Lendrick [Lanrick], and as brother to Alexander Stewart, 1st of Glassingall, and as father to Hugh Stewart in Carse of Cambus and Archibald Stewart in Lendrick [Lanrick].

“[Robert Stewart in Buchany in 1852] declares that he knew Janet Stewart a granddaughter of this John and a daughter of Hugh and he remembers her being a servant to Mr. Jaffray at Glassingall, and that she was said to be a cousin (natural) to the Laird of Glassingall that the said John Stewart left his said son Hugh Stewart in the farm of Ballacaush aforesaid, and went to the farm of Lendrick with Archibald another son, whose descendents are still there. That the said John Stewart was married to Isobel Macfarlane a daughter of Hugh Macfarlane of Calliechra at Loch Katrine in the Parish of Callander.” (Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856))

The testimony of John Stewart, Tenant in Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, in the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856) states that “he never heard that this John had any brothers or sisters and that he never knew of any uncles or aunts of Archibald [2nd of Ballacaish] and Hugh [2nd of Lendrick].” John in Auchnahard’s testimony is biased and unreliable and may conflate several generations. He may have been attempting to discredit the connection of Alexander Stewart, 1st of Glassingall.

The following testimony from this Archibald’s descendant, a later Archibald Stewart, in the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856) indicates that this Archibald acquired Lendrick in 1732:

“Archibald Stewart in Lendrick son of the now deceased John Stewart tenant there produces a Tack dated 2 December 1732 and 9 February 1733 entered into betwixt the Trustees and Commissioners for the said James Drummond and the said deceased John Stewart of the 20 shilling land of Lendrick and 20 shilling land of Drippen.”

The following is also from the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856):

“Certified copy of what is written in the family bible Lendrick 1756 that I bought this [presumably referring to the bible] for 4 pounds Scots money out of Glasgow written and signed by me Archibald Stewart. On account of my age and when the year of God I was born 1712 and married in year of God 1737 and Margaret was born in the year of God 1739 and was married in February 1763. So, Isabel was born in August 1741 and Archibald was born in November 1749 and Donald was born about the 1st of August 1757. On account when my father and mother dyed [died], my father dyed the year of God 1740 and was buried in his own spulcher [sepulchre], and my mother dyed the year of God,”

John is further mentioned:

“Alongside the tombstone of Archibald Stewart and Helen Law is a flat stone with the initials “JS and I.McF” and the date “1740.” These are the initials of John Stewart and Isabel McFarlane, the father and mother of Archibald Stewart, and great-grandfather of the claimants, Archibald Stewart and Mrs Robertson.”

(Testimony of Margaret McLaren or Robertson, widow of Andrew Robertson, Merchant, Stirling, from the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856) The stone referred to here is not listed in Mitchell’s Monumental Inscriptions and is presumed to be no longer legible.)

Several online trees incorrectly show this John as a Colonel marrying Mary Shaw and moving to Virginia, USA. The preceding records confirm that John did not emigrate and married Isobel McFarlane and died locally in 1740. Nowhere in the Glassingall papers is he referred to as a Colonel.

Caution: "Wishful Linking" Alert -- John Stewart was not a Colonel in Virginia

John Stewart, son of Archibald Stewart and Helen Law is one of the most frequently wrongly attested persons in our database. He is persistently found in online genealogies shown incorrectly as:

Col. John Stewart
Birth: November 03, 1680 Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland (United Kingdom)
Death: March 06, 1750 Rockbridge County, Virginia, USA.

Husband of Mary Stewart; Judith Gibson; Isobell McFarlane*, and Bridget Stewart

Father of:

  1. Mary Elizabeth Williamson;
  2. Isabel Stewart;
  3. Andrew Stewart;
  4. Charles Stewart;
  5. Archibald Stewart;
  6. John Stewart;
  7. Mary Beith;
  8. John Stewart, II;
  9. Archibald Stewart of Lendrick*;
  10. Hugh Stewart, in Ballacaish*;
  11. Helen Stewart*
  12. William Stewart, Sr.

THE ABOVE ACCOUNTING IS INCORRECT.

The only information above that is correct is his birth, one wife and three children as bolded and marked with an *. His correct information is presented at the left.

John Stewart in Kilmadock has been conflated with a contemporary Col. John Stewart in Virginia, USA. John Stewart, 1st of Ballacuaich, is nowhere recorded as a Colonel and never immigrated to the USA. He never married the additional women crossed out above. He never fathered the additional children crossed out above. They belong to a different John Stewart. This John Stewart died in Scotland and is buried in the Annat family section of the Old Kilmadock Cemetery in Perthshire, Scotland, along with his parents and extended family.

Children

John Stewart and Isobell McFarlane had the following children:

1. Archibald Stewart, 2nd of Lendrick, b. Abt 2 Jun 1712, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, d. 1791, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland (Age ~ 78 years)

3. Helen Stewart,   b. Abt 9 Mar 1722, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN.

We have no further information on Helen. The lack of mention of her in the later Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856) suggests she had no children.

Archibald Stewart, 2nd of Lendrick

Archibald Stewart, 2nd of Lendrick,   b. Abt 2 Jun 1712, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. 1791, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location  (Age ~ 78 years). Archibald was the eldest son of John Stewart, 1st of Ballacuaich and Lendrick, shown above. Archibald Stewart married in 1739 to Mary McFarlane,   b. 1715, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. 24 May 1796, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location  (Age 81 years).

Archibald is the patriarch of Line 4 of Branch VIII of the Stewarts of Annat in Stewarts of the South. Archibald is mentioned in Mitchell’s Monumental Inscriptions, buried in Kilmahog: “28 emblems of mortality. 1803. Archibald STEWART, MAY 1791, wife Mary MCFARLAND, 24 MAY 1796, by son Daniel in —- (illegible).”

Archibald is shown as the son of John Stewart in Lendrick in most of the family trees submitted in evidence in the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856). His status as eldest or second son is contested in the trial. (See the notes on his brother, Hugh Stewart, 2nd of Ballacaish, for more information.) Archibald is mentioned by the testimony of Robert Stewart in Buchany in 1852:

“[Robert] eclares that he knew Janet Stewart a granddaughter of this John and a daughter of Hugh and he remembers her being a servant to Mr Jaffray at Glassingall, and that she was said to be a cousin (natural) to the Laird of Glassingall that the said John Stewart left his said son Hugh Stewart in the farm of Ballacaush aforesaid, and went to the farm of Lendrick with Archibald another son, whose descendents are still there. That the said John Stewart was married to Isobel Macfarlane a daughter of Hugh Macfarlane of Calliechra at Loch Katrine in the Parish of Callander.”

On account when my father and mother dyed [died], my father dyed the year of God 1740 and was buried in his own spulcher [sepulchre], and my mother dyed the year of God, [The sentence is incomplete and the year is not given.]”

It is worth noting that, according to this account, Archibald’s first son, John (confirmed by OPR) was born before his parents were married and is not mentioned at all in the family bible and is thus presumed to have died in childhood. Children Alexander, Mary, and Duncan are also not mentioned and are also presumed to have died young. As the OPR indicates 8 children were baptised and only 4 are mentioned in the family bible, this suggests the family experienced an infant mortality rate of 50%! A sad reflection on the difficulty of life in that era.

Children

Archibald Stewart and Mary McFarlane had the following children:

1. John Stewart, b. 17 Mar 1738, Lendrick, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN

1. John Stewart,   b. 17 Mar 1738, Lendrick, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN

According to the Lendrick family bible, John was born before his parents were married. He is not named in the family bible and is presumed to have died in infancy.

The following is also from the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856):

“Certified copy of what is written in the family bible, Lendrick 1756, that I bought this [presumably referring to the bible] for 4 pounds Scots money out of Glasgow written and signed by me Archibald Stewart.

The fact that John may have been illegitimate would explain why he is listed in the Lendrick family bible yet his younger brother, Donald, succeeded to the estate of Lendrick.

2. Margaret Stewart, b. 6 May 1739, Lendrick, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN

Margaret is recorded in The Ardvorlich MSS: Glenfinglas Section as being the sister of Donald Stewart in Lendrick.

Margaret is mentioned in the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856) as being the sister of Daniel Stewart of Lendrick and the wife of James Stewart, formerly in Invercarnaig, and afterward in Auchnahard. (sic – He was actually in Auchnahard first and then Invercarnaig.)

Margaret is named in the Lendrick family bible. The following is also from the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856):

“The Fattest Woman in Britain” meets Queen Victoria

(Photo and article excerpted from Perthshire in History and Legend by Archie McKerracher, (c) 1988 the Estate of Archie McKerracher, published by John Donald Publishers, Edinburgh, pp. 111-114.)

Muckle Kate Ferguson [was known as] the fattest woman in Britain. [Note: “Muckle” is Scots for “big”.] She was born Catherine Stewart at Landrick on Loch Venacher and grew up a slim, active girl. She married Donald Ferguson [sic, John Ferguson] and settled down as the hostess of a local hostelry politely called ‘Ferguson’s Inn’ at Brig o’ Turk. It was better known by its Gaelic name of Tigh Mhaide, “The House of Sticks”, perhaps from the custom of keeping a reckoning by making notches on a stick by those who could not write.

Kate Ferguson began to put on weight as she grew older and steadily increased in bulk until she weighed in at over 25 stone (350 pounds). Her broad beaming face and hearty good humour made her inn a popular one, both with the locals and the many tourists who came by coach to visit the Trossachs.

She entertained customers with lively conversation in a mixture of Gaelic and English, seated in a large chair in the small, smoke filled room where drinks were served. While the serving girls brought in the drams Kate took the cash and dropped it into a large leather purse attached to her skirt which acted as her till. Sometimes a generous gentleman might pay her more than was due and so it came about that Kate got out of the habit of giving change at all. This eccentricity made her all the more renowned.

In 1869 Queen Victoria made a private visit to nearby Invertrossachs House. Although supposedly travelling informally, the Queen was accompanied by her daughters, the Princess Louise and Beatrice, Lady Churchill, and Colonel Ponsonby, and seventeen maids, footmen, cooks, coachmen, and the renowned John Brown, the Queen’s personal servant.

Queen Victoria had… learned of Muckle Kate Ferguson and decided the whole party should visit her. Kate had been given warning of the visit and was standing outside her inn dressed in her finery when the royal party arrived. She received the queen with Highland courtesy and native dignity, and the two enjoyed a friendly conversation.

Queen Victoria recorded the event in her diary: “We stopped at what is called ‘Ferguson’s Inn’, but is in fact the very poorest sort of Highland cottage. her lives Mrs. Ferguson, an immensely fat woman, and a well known character, who is quite nice and well dressed, but will not leave the place where she has lived all her life selling whisky. She was brought out to see me, shaking hands with me and patting me. She walks with a crutch and had to sit down.”

The Queen presented Kate with two sovereigns which she kept to her dying day and bequeathed to her posterity. This incident made Kate famous throughout the land, and for years afterwards her portrait appeared in postcards in sop windows all over Britain.

Less well known is the unfortunate misunderstanding which occurred due to Gaelic speaking Kate’s difficulty with English. It appears the Queen’s party were greatly embarrassed when Kate offered them tea and “a gill a-piece”. All of them refused the apparent offer of the demon drink and departed quickly, leaving poor Kate wondering what she had done to offend. All she had offered them was a “jeely piece” or jam sandwich!

Muckle Kate Ferguson died in 1872 and her body was carried in a specially built coffin drawn by a team of horses. Hundreds followed her funeral procession to St. Kessog’s kirkyard at Callander. Kate’s old inn of Tigh Mhaide at Brig o’ Turk has fallen into ruin but the old house beside it built for her retirement still stands and has been converted into a private house of the same name. the front window still bears the marks where it was widened to allow Kate’s coffin to pass through, it being too large to leave by the door.

Stewarts of Ballacaish and Burn of Cambus

The family of the Stewarts of Lendrick became extinct with the passing of Archibald Stewart, 4th of Lendrick. We now move to their cousins in Ballacaish and Carse of Cambus who descend from John Stewart, 1st of Ballacuaich and Lendrick, shown above.

Ballacuaich/Ballacaish is located on the Coillechat Burn above the A84 road and west of Annat. See map above.

Burn of Cambus is located on the A84 road between Doune and Callander. See map at right.

Hugh Stewart, 2nd of Ballacaish and 1st of Carse of Cambus

Hugh Stewart, 2nd of Ballacaish and 1st of Carse of Cambus,   b. Abt 1715, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. Bef 1773, Carse of Cambus, Kilmadock, Perthsire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location  (Age ~ 57 years). Hugh Stewart is a (probably younger) son of of John Stewart, 1st of Ballacuaich and Lendrick, shown above. The birth order of John’s sons was disputed in the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856) as detailed below.

Hugh Stewart married firstly on 23 Apr 1745 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location to Janet Buchanan,   b. 18 Aug 1719, Cuilanteogle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN. Hugh married secondly Abt 1754 to Janet Duncanson,   b. Abt 1730, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN.

We have no record of Hugh’s birth to verify his date of birth. The date shown here is an estimate. However, the estimate has significant implications. Was Hugh born before or after 1712?

Hugh Stewart is referred to in the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856) as “Hugh Stewart of Carse of Cambus, eldest son of John Stewart, and cousin-german of Archibald Stewart, second of Glassingall.” He is also shown in several trees submitted in evidence as being the eldest son of John Stewart of Ballacauich and Lendrick, and being the older brother of Archibald Stewart of Lendrick. He is also shown as the father of James Stewart of Carse of Cambus. However, these trees cannot be trusted as entirely reliable as there was an enormous financial motive for bias in their drafting as whichever brother was eldest, his descendants would have a superior claim to inherit the estate of Glassingall. The submission of Robert Stewat of Ardvorlich is the sole dissenting account that claims that Hugh was the younger son and Archibald was the older son.

Onomastics, chronology and estate ownership favour Ardvorlich’s version that Hugh was the younger son. John would have named his eldest son after his own father, Archibald, and his second son after his wife’s father, Hugh McFarlane. Archibald was married in 1739 whereas Hugh was not married until 1745. Archibald inherited Lendrick (believed to be the superior property) while Hugh inherited Ballacaish. While only circumstantial, these all suggest that Archibald was the older son. For Hugh to be the older son would require that John had an earlier son named Archibald who died in infancy and who (like Hugh) was not recorded, and that Hugh waited until his late 30s to get married, and that Ballacaish was actually the superior estate. The latter case is entirely possible and cannot be ruled out, however it seems to be the lesser likely. Thus, we show Hugh’s birth as estimated to be after 1712 and we place him as the younger son.

Furthermore, Stewarts of the South lists Donald Stewart of Lendrick (son of Archibald) ahead of this Hugh Stewart, further suggesting that the Lendrick family is senior to the Ballachaish family.

Hugh is mentioned in the testimony of Robert Stewart in Buchany in the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856):

“Declared that he was personally acquainted with Alexander Stewart late tenant in Carse of Cambus who is now at Blairdrummond Moss and that he was also acquainted with his father James Stewart who was tenant in Carse of Cambus, and was buried in Kilmadock Churchyard in 1826. That he also knew John Stewart, Merchant in Kippen, who was the brother of James last mentioned, and the father of Dr Stewart of Glasgow, and John Graham Stewart also in Glasgow. Declares that the father of John and James above mentioned was Hugh Stewart, who was first a tenant in Ballacaish, under Mr Stewart of Craigton, which adjoins Annat, and afterwards in Carse of Cambus, and that Hugh is also buried in Kilmadock Churchyard. That Hugh Stewart was first married to Margaret Buchanan, who was the mother of John Stewart in Kippen, and second to Janet [Duncandow] who was the mother of Janet Stewart in Carse of Cambus. That Hugh Stewart was son of John Stewart tenant first in Ballacaish aforesaid, and afterwards in Lendrick which was one of the forfeited farms on the Perth estate.”

Hugh is further mentioned:

“Hugh Stewart was first married to Margaret Buchanan, who was the mother of John Stewart in Kippen, and second to Janet [Duncandow] who was the mother of Janet Stewart in Carse of Cambus.”

Stewarts of the South, Ardvorlich Branch VIII, Line 4, gives Hugh’s family as:

“Hugh Stewart, uncle to the foregoing Donald Stewart, tacksman of the Carse of Camus, near Down (Doune) Lodge, Earl’s estate. Rent £100. He left five sons:
a. James, a tenant there with one son.
b. John, a merchant vintner and farmer in the village of Kippen, Stirlingshire. He has four sons: 1-4. One of them is a surgeon in Glasgow, and the rest are at home – not this one, a writer, the third is a merchant in Glasgow, and the fourth at home. (It is uncertain what the author means by “the rest are at home” as the third son is in Glasgow, not at home.)
c. Alexander Stewart, a merchant in Glasgow with one son.
d. Hugh Stewart, a wright in Glasgow with sons, but I am not certain of their number.
e. Archibald, a wright in Stirling, with a family of sons, but of their number I am not certain.”

Hugh Stewart’s testament 6 Feb 1773:

“The Testament Dative and Inventory of the debts and sums of Hugh Stewart that pertained and were addebted to the deceased Hugh Stewart, tenant in Kerse of Cambus within the Parish of Kilmadock and Commissariat of Dunblane at the time of his decease which was upon the BLANK day of BLANK and BLANK years. John’s baptism was witnessed by Robert and James Stewart.

For reasons unknown, John did not take over the family property of Carse of Cambus, but, instead became a merchant in the town of Kippen, Stirlingshire. His younger half-brother, James, became 2nd of Carse of Cambus.

John is described in Stewarts of the South as being “a merchant vintner and farmer in the village of Kippen, Stirling; has four sons; one of them a surgeon in Glasgow, the rest at home – not this one a Writer the third a merchant in Glasgow, the fourth is home.”

John is mentioned in the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856) as follows:

“I Duncan Stewart, Auchnahard, Glenfinglass being now in the 96th year and in a sound state of mind do solemnly declare that John Graham Stewart residing at No 5 St Vincent Place, Glasgow is the oldest son of the late John Stewart, farmer Kippen who was the oldest son of Hugh Stewart farmer Carse of Cambus near Doune the son of John Stewart farmer Balichcaich the brother of Alexander Stewart of Glassingall but I cannot state on my [ ] within the said Hugh Stewart was the oldest or youngest son of the said John Stewart brother to Alexander Stewart of Glassingall. This I declare to be the truth and correct statement and signed by me before these witnesses James Stewart residing at Duart Glenfinglass and William Stewart Whyte residing at [Flower Grove Caleaucter] (Callander?)”

He is also mentioned in the testimony of Robert Stewart in Buchany from the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856):

“Declared that he was personally acquainted with Alexander Stewart late tenant in Carse of Cambus who is now at Blairdrummond Moss and that he was also acquainted with his father James Stewart who was tenant in Carse of Cambus, and was buried in Kilmadock Churchyard in 1826. That he also knew John Stewart Merchant in Kippen, who was the brother of James last mentioned, and the father of Dr Stewart of Glasgow, and John Graham Stewart also in Glasgow. Declares that the father of John and James above mentioned was Hugh Stewart, who was first a tenant in Ballacaish, under Mr Stewart of Craigton, which adjoins Annat, and afterwards in Carse of Cambus, and that Hugh is also buried in Kilmdaock Churchyard.

The Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856) also include the following family information in support of the claim:

John Graham Stewart,   b. 8 Jul 1792, Kippen, Stirlingshire, Scotland Find all individuals with events at this location,   d. UNKNOWN.

John Graham Stewart is mentioned in the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856): “John Graham Stewart residing at No 5 St Vincent Place, Glasgow is the oldest son of the late John Stewart, farmer Kippen.” (1851)

John is one of the unnamed sons of his father described in Stewarts of the South as “has four sons; one of them a surgeon in Glasgow, the rest at home – not this one a Writer the third a merchant in Glasgow, the fourth is home.” The wording is confusing. It would appear that ca. 1820, three of John’s sons were adults living in Glasgow, one a merchant, one a surgeon, and the other a writer (lawyer), and the fourth being a minor still residing at home. However we only have record of births for three sons.

Alexander may be the “Dr. Stewart of Glasgow” mentioned in the testimony of Robert Stewart in Buchany from the Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856) or it could refer to his younger brother, James:

James has not been found in later public records. Some online genealogies claim he was James Fogo Stewart who died in Glasgow in 1890, however we have yet to see evidence to support this claim.
