The Stewarts in Cuilantogle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
8 Line of the Stewarts of Dalveich
Very little is known of the Stewarts in Cuilantogle. They are recorded as the last line of descendants from John Dubh Mhor Stewart in Dalveich. The patriarch of this line was Walter Stewart who lived in in the mid-18th century in Cuiltantogle in Callander parish in historic Highland Perthshire, Scotland (present-day Stirling Council Area). Insufficient information is known about Walter Stewart to accurately account for his family. The little that is presently known is shown below.

Cuilantogle (Coilantogle), Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
Coilantogle (old spelling: Cuilantogle) is an abandoned farmstead, now a ruin, on the north shore of Loch Venachar, just west of the village of Callander, in Callander parish, in historic Highland Perthshire, Scotland (present-day Stirling Council Area.) It’s name derives from the Gaelic, Cuil an-t’ogle, which means “woods of the deep.” In the 18th century it was a large and prosperous farm with multiple tenants including several Stewart families from different branches of the Stewarts of Balquhidder.
8 Line – The Stewarts in Cuilantogle
The final family of Stewarts to descend from the John Dubh Mhor Stewart of Dalveich were a family who resided in Cuilantogle (“Cuil an-t’ogle” = “woods of the deep”) in Callander parish. As they are enumerated last among the descendant lines from the Stewarts of Dalveich, it is presumed (but not confirmed) that they descend from the youngest son of John Dubh Mhor Stewart. They are described in Stewarts of the South as follows:
Walter Stewart – late tacksman in Cuilanleogail, Callendar parish, on the Earl of Murray’s estate. (Presumably Walter is dead in ca. 1815.) He left three sons:
- A son of unknown name who is a soldier. He has a family.
- A son of unknown name who is a labourer in the town of Stirling. He has a family.
- Another son of unknown name who is also a labourer in the town of Stirling. He has a family.
Stewarts of the South-Appendix does not list Walter’s two sons in Stirling. This suggests that the author was not well-acquainted with this family and the information may be of questionable reliability.
Walter Stewart in Cuilantogle
Due to the lack of Information presented in Stewarts of the South, we have been unable to identify Walter or his family in other public records, thus, at present, we’re only able to account for this line as follows. The estimated ages given here are based on very little information and could be off by as much as a full generation.
_____ Stewart, b. ca. 1690 in Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. His name is not known, but it is suggested based on chronology that Walter (below) was most likely a grandson of John Dubh Mhor Stewart in Dalveich.

- Walter Stewart in Cuilantogle, b. ca. 1720 in Perthshire, Scotland. He is described in Stewarts of the South as “late tacksman in Cuilanleogail, Callendar parish, on the Earl of Murray’s estate. He left three sons.” Presumably Walter was dead by ca.1815-20. He had the following children:
- Son Stewart, b. ca 1760 in Cuilantogle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He is described in Stewarts of the South as “a soldier. He has a family.” The location of this son is not given, though his birthplace is presumed to be Cuilantogle where his father is said to have lived. Stewarts of the South frequently identifies if the children were underage and doesn’t do so here. Thus, it is possible that this “Son” Stewart’s children were of adult age when Stewarts of the South was written (ca. 1815-1820). However, we should not be confident in this interpretation as it rests on an absence of information. He had the following children:

Research Leads
As we do not have enough information to confidently identify any member of this family in public records in Balquhidder, Callander or Stirling, we can only present the following leads for families who might be related to this line.
The following Walter Stewart resided in Cuilantogle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland and could be the Walter Stewart in Cuilantogle above. However, he appears to be too young to have had grandchildren alive ca. 1815-1820. He also shows only two sons, thus this could be a second marriage for Walter with sons from an earlier relationship or he could be a son of Walter Stewart in Cuilantogle, named after his father. Or he may not be related at all.
Walter Stewart married on 30 MAY 1783 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret Fergussonne. They had the following children:
- Alexander Stewart, b. 20 APR 1784 in Cuilantolge, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
