The Stewarts in Ardveich Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland and
Stronvar, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
5 Line of the Stewarts of Dalveich
The Ross Stewarts were founded by James Ross Stewart in the mid-18th century who lived at Ardveich in Glen Beich on the north shore of Loch Earn in Comrie parish in historic Highland Perthshire, Scotland (present-day Stirling Council Area). James Ross Stewart was a descendant of John Dubh Mhor Stewart, the progenitor of the Stewarts of Dalveich. The Ross Stewarts were never actually called “Ross Stewarts.” We have given them that nickname in order to help differentiate them from the several other Stewart families who also lived at Ardveich at the same time. They also had a second residence at nearby Stronvar in Balquhidder parish.
Ancestors of the Stewarts in Ardveich & Stronvar
The Ross Stewarts in Ardveich and Stronvar descend from the Stewarts of Dalveich, who descend from the Stewarts of Ardvorlich who are the senior branch of the Stewarts of Balquhidder.

Ardveich and Stronvar
5 Line of the Stewarts of Dalveich resided at two primary properties: Ardveich in Comrie parish and Stronvar in adjacent Balquhidder parish.

Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland
Ardveich derives its name from the Gaelic, Ard-Bheathaich, which means “height of the birch woods”. It was a crofting settlement in Glen Beich (“glen of the birch woods”) on the north shore of Loch Earn in historic Highland Perthshire, Scotland (present-day Stirling Council Area). The Beich Burn (“birch woods creek”) bisects the glen and forms the parish boundary between Balquhidder parish on the west and Comrie parish on the east. At it’s height, Ardveich was split into two crofts: Wester and Easter Ardveich. Only Wester Ardveich remains today and is known simply as Ardveich. Easter Ardveich is now a ruin. By the early 1800s, the Marquess of Breadalbane, landlord of Glen Beich, began removing tenants to make way for sheep pasture. In some cases, the tentants were forcibly removed and the roofs torn off their houses and burned to prevent them from returning. Easter Ardveich shows signs of such possible forced evictions. As noted above, by 1861, nearly all the descendants of this family had abandoned Glen Beich for the New World or the Lowlands.
Stronvar, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
Stronvar is an estate property located just southwest of the village of Balquhidder on the south shore of Loch Voil in Balquhidder parish in historic Perthshire, Scotland (present-day Stirling Council Area). It sits at the foot or mouth of Glen Buckie on the loch shore. Its name derives from the Gaelic Sron-a-bharra. Sron = “nose shaped peak”, bharr = “top” — thus “top of the nose-shaped peak” or “promontory of the point.”
The estate has probably had a primary manor house of some description for centuries even before the current manor house was built. It would have been surrounded by outlying secondary tenant Highland longhouses and cottage residences.
15th century records show it being part of the Balquhidder properties belonging to the earliest Stewarts of Baldorran and Balquhidder and became a possession of the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran, the third principal family of the Stewarts of Balquhidder. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Stronvar was also known as Hyndfield and was occupied by the Stewarts of Glenogle (Branch V of the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran).

With the demise of the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran, the estate was purchased in the 18th century by Capt. Robert Ferguson. He had no children and it passed to his nephew, John Stewart of Stronvar, Provost of Cupar, who later sold it to Capt. Duncan Stewart, 16th of Glenbuckie. Capt. Duncan belonged to the later Benmore Stewarts of Glenbuckie who came from Appin and were not related to the original Stewarts of Glenbuckie or to the Stewarts of Balquhidder. Capt. Duncan Stewart built the current manor house which is now abandoned and dilapidated.
Capt. Duncan Stewart sold Stronvar in the late 19th-century and it passed through several hands. In the 20th-century, it became a hotel and later a youth hostel and has since fallen into disuse and disrepair.

5 Line – The Stewarts in Ardveich and Stronvar
Information on the Ross Stewarts in Ardveich and Stronvar comes from the following sources which do not reconcile with each other perfectly. They have been supplemented by public and parish records.
- Stewarts of the South
- The Stewarts of Ardvorlich, Vol. 3
- The McIntyre Letter
All three accounts give slightly different versions of this family.
Stewarts of the South
Stewarts of the South accounts for this line as follows:
James Stewart, otherwise known as Sheumas Ross* – late tenant at Ardveich, Loch Earnside, on Drummond’s estate. (Presumably he died by ca. 1815.) He left two sons, and they are:
- James Stewart, who is a tenant of Stronvar in Balquhidder parish, on Captain [Duncan] Stewart [of Glenbuckie]’s estate. His rent is £60 (annualy). Stronvar once belonged to Captain Fergusson of [ditto] (Stronvar) and to the present Provost Fergusson in Cupar, Fifeshire, who sold it to Capt [Duncan] Stewart [of Glenbuckie]. Although I am sorry to say the seller is better than the buyer.
- He has two sons who are both minors.
- Robert Stewart, who was once a foreman to Mr (William) Stewart (8th Laird) of Ardvorlich. He is now working in the same capacity with one Mr Rob at Menstrie in Blairlogie parish on Sir Ralph Abercrombie’s estate in Stirlingshire.
- He has two sons (presumably adult sons).
* Sheumas is Gaelic for James, so his English name would be James Ross Stewart. “Ross” has more than one meaning. It can be a nickname form of Robertson (or son of Robert), thus it could be a patronymic indicating that James was the “son of Robert.” Or his mother may have been a Ross or Robertson and it was a middle name borrowed from her surname. Ross is also Gaelic for “a wooded promontory,” in which case his name might mean “James of the Ross.”
Stewarts of the South Appendix lists only one person of the name Stewart residing in Stronvar ca. 1815-1820, as follows:
No 11 Mr James Stewart, tenant at Stronvar, of the Ardvorlich family an industrious clannish char £60. Capt Stewart of Glenbuckie’s property.
This James is identical with James Og Stewart in Stronvar.
The Stewarts of Ardvorlich Vol 3
The Stewarts of Ardvorlich Vol. 3 includes a detailed account of a James Stewart who “long resided about Stronvar”. John Stewart’s source for this account was an unknown private submission ca. 1879.
The Stewarts of Ardvorlich Vol. 3 presents an account of this family as follows:
There were two brothers of this family living at Ardveich at the end of the 18th century. They were Alexander (Sandy) Stewart and his brother James Stewart….
The second brother, James, long resided about Stronvar. His son was called James Og and lived on a croft just where the nursery used to be at Ardvorlich. The croft was called Ashinranoch. He had two sons and about six daughters.
- Robert, who lived at Ashinranoch, and was a ploughman at Ardvorlich. He married Lizzie MacLaughlan, a servant at Ardvorlich. His son, William, is now (1879) a shopkeeper at Menstrie.
- Alexander (Sandy). [No such son has been found in other records.]
- Anne, who married her second cousin, a farmer at Kip, and was mother of the Free Church minister at Killin.
- Mary was mother of Robert and Peter Ferguson in St. Fillans.
- Another [Margaret] was married to a Stewart [sic, McIntyre] and was mother to Mrs. Mackintyre of Gartnafuaran. [Donald McIntyre in Gartnafuaran married Catharine McIntyre, daughter of Duncan McIntyre and Margaret Stewart.]
- Another married a McIntyre and was grandmother to the people at Coshinachie (see inset), whose parents used to be in Gleninisach. [She has not been identified. She could be Catherine, Janet, Elizabeth or Isabel.]
While this account does not include any dates, the reference to “the Free Kirk Minister at Killin” allows us to accurately identify the family of Anne Stewart and to establish a basis for dating the remainder of the family.
This account appears to conflate two generations. It appears to present these six children as being children of James Og Stewart, son of James Ross Stewart, when, in fact, they are all siblings to James Og Stewart.
This version claims that James (Ross) Stewart in Stronvar was the younger brother of Alexander Stewart of 6-Line. Whereas Stewarts of the South seems to indicate that James was the older brother.
Coshinachie – identified from a photo in Around Callander and the Trossachs, by Morag Lloyds, in which it is shown just east of the Smithy and near the road junction.
The McIntyre Letter – 1908
In 1908, Christina Margaret McIntyre (b. 1878) received a letter from her 77-year-old aunt Margaret McIntyre which stated that Margaret’s mother (Christina’s grandmother), Mary Stewart, was born in 1798 in Stronvar as the daughter of James Stewart and Jean McDiarmid, and that James was the youngest of three brothers — the others being John and Donald. It also says that Donald had to flee the country due to his “wild behaviour.”
Christina Margaret McIntyre was the youngest daughter of John Lorne Stewart McIntyre, son of Peter McIntyre and Mary Stewart, daughter of James Og Stewart in Stronvar (shown below). Margaret McIntyre (b. 1831), author of the letter, was a younger sister of John Lorne Stewart McIntyre.
The James Stewart that the letter is referring to is James Og Stewart, grandfather to Christina’s aunt Margaret McIntyre. One would like to think that Margaret knew the family of her own grandfather well, and that her account is reliable, but she was 77-years-old, just four years from her death, at the time that she wrote the letter. Her grandfather, James Og Stewart had been dead at least 70 years by then, so Margaret McIntyre was at most 7-years-old and possibly not even born when her grandfather died. He died in Scotland and she was raised in Canada, so she certainly never met her grandfather. Thus, her account of her grandfather’s family would have been recalled from the stories told to her by others decades prior to her writing of the letter. As such, her account is succeptible to mixing up details as would appear to be the case.
Margaret McIntyre stated that James Og Stewart was the youngest of three brothers, but no older brothers have been found for James. Margaret stated that James’ older brothers were John and Donald, and that Donald had to flee the country due to his “wild behaviour.” But James had no known brothers named John or Donald.
However, James Og Stewart did have a younger brother, Robert Stewart in Ashinranoch, who appears to have had to flee the country for his “wild behaviour” (which is putting it kindly). Robert Stewart sired multiple illegitimate children with multiple young women and was reprimanded by the Comrie Kirk Session on multiple occasions for his conduct. He also appears to have been fired from multiple estate jobs because of his conduct and finally “fled the country” (of Perthshire) to far away Menstrie in Clackmannanshire, Scotland.
The Origins of James Ross Stewart in Ardveich
James Ross Stewart was descended from John Dubh Mhor Stewart of Dalveich by unknown means. Chronology suggests that he was a great-grandson. The intervening generations are not known for certain. The father of James Ross Stewart is believed, but not confirmed, to have been named Robert. He is shown here with a question mark (?) after his name to indicate the uncertainty. Verifiable accounting of this family begins with James Ross Stewart and his descendants.
John Dubh Mhor Stewart, of Dalveich, b. Abt 1630, Ardvorlich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Abt 1732, Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland (Age ~ 102 years)
- Robert? mac Iain Dubh Mhor Stewart, in Glenbeich, b. Abt 1678, Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN.John Dubh Mhor Stewart had eight sons who all grew to adulthood and had descendants. This son’s name is not known for sure but is suggested to be Robert. The following letter mentions Robert Stewart in Glenbeich: “1713 – Alex Stewart, London, wants brother Robert Stewart, in Glenbeach (Glenbeich) to send him money.” Also a Robert Steuart entered into a contract of wadset for the lands of Ardveich with James Drummond, Earl of Perth, on 4 January, 1733 (source: Gordon MacGregor, author of The Red Book of Scotland, personal correspondence). These two Robert Stewarts may or may not be the same person. They may be either a son or grandson of John Dubh Mhor Stewart. There is insufficient evidence to know for certain. It is suggested, but not confirmed, that Lines 5 and 6 descend from this son.
- Robert? Stewart, in Ardveich, b. Abt 1705, Glen Beich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN.
The Stewarts of Ardvorlich Vol 3, says, “There were two brothers of this family living at Ardveich at the end of the 18th century. They were Alexander (Sandy) Stewart and his brother James Stewart. The eldest, Alexander (Sandy), was a wright….” Stewarts of the South presents Alexander Stewart as the patriarch of Line 6 and James Ross Stewart as the patriarch of Line 5. This would seem to suggest that Line 5 is senior to Line 6, but Stewarts of the South cannot be relied upon for accurate accounting of seniority of secondary lines. Whereas, The Stewarts of Ardvorlich, Vol. 3, is quite specific that Sandy Stewart is the older brother and James Ross Stewart is the younger brother. Sandy and James’ father’s name is not known for certain. He may have been a middle or younger son of John Dubh Mhor Stewart of Dalveich, however current chronology suggests he was more likely a grandson. Onomastics suggests his name is Robert, but this is not confirmed. Alexander’s oldest son was named Robert. It was custom in that era for families to name their first son after the father’s father. James Ross’ oldest son was named James. While this would suggest that his father’s name should also be James, one of the known meanings for the name ‘Ross’ was a contraction of ‘Robertson’ or “son of Robert.” And we cannot eliminate that possibility that James may have had an earlier son named Robert not known to us.
Nothing more is known about this Stewart other than the fact that he presumably lived at Ardveich in Comrie parish, Perthshire, Scotland, and that he was a descendant (likely a grandson) of John Dubh Mhor Stewart in Dalveich, illegitimate son of the notorious Major James Beag Stewart, 2nd of Ardvorlich. Present accounting would favour that was the son of Robert Stewart in Glenbeich, but this is not confirmed.
Given what we know of the culture of the area, and his clan, it is also likely that this Stewart was a Jabobite. Given the likely ages of his children, it’s possible that he even fought at Culloden.
- Alexander Stewart, wright in Wester Ardveich, b. Abt 1730, Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN. Alexander is described as a wright (carpenter) in Ardveich. His information is presented on our 6 Line – The Wright Stewarts in Ardveich page.
- James Ross Stewart, in Wester Ardveich and Stronvar, b. Abt 1732, Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Bef 1815 (Age ~ 82 years). James’ information is presented below.
- Robert? Stewart, in Ardveich, b. Abt 1705, Glen Beich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN.

James Ross Stewart in Ardveich and Stronvar
James Ross Stewart, in Wester Ardveich and Stronvar, b. Abt 1732, Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Bef 1815 (Age ~ 82 years). He is believed to be the younger son of Robert? Stewart in Ardveich, shown above.
The Stewarts of Ardvorlich, Vol. 3, says,

Whereas, The Stewarts of Ardvorlich, Vol. 3, is quite specific that Sandy Stewart is the older brother and James Ross Stewart is the younger brother.
Their father’s name is not known for certain. He was probably one of the middle sons of John Dubh Mhor Stewart of Dalveich. Present accounting would favour that this line descends from Robert mac Iain Dubh Mhor Stewart.
James Ross Stewart lived at Wester Ardveich on the east side of the Beich Burn in Glen Beich, on the north shore of Loch Earn, just east of the village of Lochearnhead, in Comrie parish, Perthshire, Scotland. His ancestors had resided in that glen for three generations before him. He was a descendant (likely a great-grandson) of John Dubh Mhor Stewart of Dalveich, illegitimate son of the notorious Major James Beag Stewart, 2nd of Ardvorlich. James Ross Stewart’s exact birth record has not been found. Records were far from legible or complete in the 1700s.
James is believed to have married in the late 1750s to Catherine McLaren, however no record of their marriage has been found. The McLaren family had lived at Ardveich for many generations. In an era of intense religious conflict that erupted into war in James’ lifetime, it’s possible that they were not married in the established Church of Scotland.
James Stewart and Catherine McLaren had ten children at Wester Ardveich between 1758-1777.
According to Stewarts of the South, James was otherwise known as Sheumas Ross. Sheumas is Gaelic for James, so his English name would be James Ross Stewart. Ross can be a nickname form of Robertson, thus James’ father may have been named Robert as we are presently suggesting, or his mother may have been a Ross or Robertson. “Ross” (“ros”) is also a Gaelic word meaning “a wooded promontory” and may refer to his residence, so his nickname might mean “James of the Ross.” James was described as a “late tenant at Ardveich, Loch Earnside, on Drummond’s estate.”
The Stewarts of Ardvorlich, Vol, 3, states that James Ross Stewart had two sons and about six daughters. Thus, it is presumed that at least one of the daughters shown here died young.
The McIntyre Letter states that James’ son, James Og Stewart, was the youngest of three brothers. Parish records show no older sons for James Ross Stewart by Catherine McLaren. This could mean that James Ross Stewart had an earlier family with another woman. Which could explain why James’ first son is not named Robert. Or the McIntyre letter may have confused James Ross Stewart with his son James Og Stewart.
James Ross Stewart is presumed to have married to Catherine McLaren, b. Abt 1735, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN although no record of their marriage has been found. They had the following children:
1. Catherine Stewart, b. Abt 1 Feb 1758, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN
Catherine Stewart, b. Abt 1 Feb 1758, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN.
Nothing more is known of Catherine.
2. Elizabeth Stewart, b. Abt 8 Sep 1760, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN
Elizabeth Stewart, b. Abt 8 Sep 1760, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN.
Nothing more is known of Elizabeth.
3. Mary Stewart, b. Abt 31 Jan 1761, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, d. Bef 1763, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland
Mary Stewart, b. Abt 31 Jan 1761, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Bef 1763, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland (Age ~ 1 years).
Mary is presumed to have died prior to the birth of her same-named sister in 1763.
4. Mary Stewart, b. Abt 12 Jan 1763, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, d. Between 1851 and 1861
Mary Stewart, b. Abt 12 Jan 1763, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Between 1851 and 1861 (Age ~ 87 years).
The Stewarts of Ardvorlich, Vol. 3, says that “Mary was mother of Robert and Peter Ferguson in St. Fillans.” From this reference we can conclude that Mary married a Ferguson and had at least two sons, namely Robert and Peter who later lived in St. Fillans. Clan Ferguson records and parish records allow us to confidently identify Mary Stewart’s husband and family. Clan Ferguson records incorrectly indicate that Mary came from Fortingall, mistaking Mary for her daughter-in-law, Janet Stewart (wife of Robert Ferguson) who was from Fortingall.
On 3 Aug 1787, at age 24, Mary Stewart married in Comrie parish, Perthshire, Scotland to Peter Ferguson, in St. Fillans, b. Abt 1765, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN . They settled in Easter Glentarken on the northeastern shore of Loch Earn in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, just west of the present-day village of St. Fillans.
In the early 1800s, almost the entire population of Glen Tarken was forcibly removed from their homes by their landlord and relocated to the new planned village of St. Fillans.
Mary Ferguson (Stewart) has not been found in 1841.
In 1851, at age 86, Mary Ferguson (Stewart) was residing in St. Fillans, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, in the home of her son Peter Ferguson and his wife Helen and their kids. Mary was receiving parochial support at the time.
Mary Ferguson (Stewart) has not been found in 1861 and is presumed to have died.
Mary Stewart and Peter Ferguson had the following children:
-
- John Ferguson, b. Abt 30 Mar 1788, Easter Glentarken, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Bef 1805, St. Fillans, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland (Age ~ 16 years). John is presumed to have died young before the birth of his same-named younger brother in 1805.
- Isabel Ferguson, b. Abt 11 Oct 1789, Easter Glentarken, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN
- Margaret Ferguson, b. Abt 20 Nov 1791, Easter Glentarken, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN
- Janet Ferguson, b. Abt 20 Oct 1793, Glentarken, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN
- Robert Ferguson, in St. Fillans, b. Abt 20 Dec 1795, Glentarken, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. 6 Sep 1867, St. Fillans, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland (Age ~ 71 years).
Robert Ferguson was born in 1795 in Glentarken, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. Both his mother and wife were Stewarts from Dalveich clan. His family was forcefully removed from Glentarken by their landlord sometime in the early 1800s and moved to nearby St. Fillans Village.
In 1817 at age 23, Robert Ferguson married in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet Stewart. They had a family of six children in St. Fillans.
In 1841, Robert Ferguson was residing in St. Fillans, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, with his wife and daughters Grizel (Grace) and Mary (Margaret).
In 1851, at age 54, Robert Ferguson was residing in St. Fillans, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, with his wife. He was employed as a general labourer. They were living in the home of Peter Dochart (51).
In 1861, at age 65, Robert Ferguson was residing in St. Fillans, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland with his wife. He was employed as a surfaceman.
Robert Ferguson died in 1867 and is buried in Dundurn Cemetery, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland.
Robert is found in Mitchell’s Monumental Inscriptions for Dundurn Cemetery, St. Fillans, with the following entry: “Robert FERGUSON, feuar at St. Fillans, wife Janet STEWART, 6 SEP 1867, daughter Margaret 12 JAN 1845, and son Donald died (in) infancy.”
Robert Ferguson married on 7 Jul 1817 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet Stewart, b. 1797, Fortingall, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN, St. Fillans, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland . Janet’s birth family is unknown.
Robert Ferguson and Janet Stewart had the following children:
- Peter Mhor Ferguson, b. Abt 25 Apr 1818, St. Fillans, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN

- Daniel Ferguson, b. Abt 21 Oct 1798, Glentarken, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN, St. Fillans, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland . Clan Ferguson records indicate that Daniel died young.
- Peter Ferguson, b. Abt 29 Nov 1800, Glentarken, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Bef 1804, Glentarken, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland (Age ~ 3 years). Peter is presumed to have died young prior to the birth of his same-named younger brother in 1804.

PLEASE NOTE: Donald and his wife Catharine both had parents with exactly the same names, both from Carnlia, and they were married only one day apart. Census records confirm this is NOT an error. In 1851 Donald and Catharine were residing at Gartnafuaran with Catharine’s widowed father in their household, and they were living right next door to Donald’s elderly parents.
In 1841, at age 31, Catherine was residing in Craig Uisin, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, with her husband Donald and their kids John (4), Margaret (2), and Peter (9 months). Ann Stewart, b. Abt 1775, Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN
The Stewarts of Ardvorlich, Vol. 3, says that Ann “married her second cousin, a farmer at Kip, and was mother of the Free Church minister at Killin.” Her husband has been identified as John Stewart, in Ardveich and Keip, b. Abt 20 Oct 1765, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Between 1828 and 1831, Keip in Strathyre, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland (Age ~ 62 years). He was of 3 Line – The Stewarts in Ardveich, Lochearnhead and Keip. John is described in Stewarts of the South as “a tacksman at Kiep of Strathyre in Balquhidder, on Buchanan of Cambusmore’s estate.” Stewarts of the South says they had five sons, including two adults and three minors prior to ca. 1815-20. Mitchell’s Monumental Inscriptions reveals the identity of the Free Church minister at Killin as Rev. Alexander Stewart and allows us to identify the remainder of this family with confidence.
Ann Stewart and her husband, John Stewart, were not only second-cousins, but also in-laws. Ann’s sister, Margaret nic Seamus Stewart, married Duncan McIntyre in Carnlia, their daughter, Catharine McIntyre, married John Stewart’s nephew, Donald McIntyre in Carnlia.

James Og Stewart in Stronvar
James Og Stewart, in Stronvar, b. Abt 1 Aug 1765, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN. James Og Stewart was the fifth child and oldest known son of James Ross Stewart shown above.
James is described in Stewarts of the South as “a tenant of Stronvar in Balquhidder parish, on Captain [Duncan] Stewart [of Glenbuckie]’s estate. His rent is £60.” James is described in The Stewarts of Ardvorlich, Vol. 3, as “James Og” which means “Young James”, and as having “lived on a croft just where the nursery used to be at Ardvorlich. The croft was called Ashinranoch.” The McIntyre letter claims that James was the youngest of three brothers, however no older brothers have been found for him.
On 22 Aug 1787, an illegitimate son named Allan Stewart was born to James Stewart in Wester Ardveich and Euphemia McGregor in Easter Glentarken. The Kirk Session minutes for Comrie Parish record the following: “Comrie 10th Febry 1788 James Stewart in Ardveich guilty of adultery with Euphan McGregor in Ester Glentarkin.” The minutes specify “adultery” as opposed to “fornication” which indicates that either James or Euphan was married at the time of the liason. The only viable candidates for the father of Allan are James Og Stewart or his father, James Ross Stewart. As James Ross Stewart would be at least 30 years older than Euphemia, then James Og Stewart is preferred as the father as he was the same age as Euphemia. If so, then it means that James Og was married to an unknown woman at the time. No such marriage has been identified for him.
The name “Allan” is an unusual choice for the baby’s name. The name does not occur in either parent’s family. It’s possible that he could have been named after the infamous Allan Breck Stewart who was known to frequent the area and was allied with the Stewarts of Balquhidder. Baby Allan disappears from records after his birth and is presumed to have died in childhood.
“1787 Augt 22nd Jas Stewart in W. Ardveich & Euphan McGrigor had their son born in uncleanness Bapt this day named Allan.” (Comrie OPR)
On 30 May 1795, at age 30, James Og Stewart married in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland to Jean McDiarmid, b. Abt 1770, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN. James is recorded as residing in Wester Ardveich at the time of their marriage. James first mistress, Euphemia McGregor, in 1790 had relations and an illegitimate daughter with Daniel McDiarmid in Easter Ardveich. It seems likely that Daniel McDiarmid was related to James’ wife Catherine. Given James’ late age at marriage, it’s possible that he was previously married.
James had relations with Euphemia Campbell-alias-McGregor, b. 1766, Bridge End of Glentarken, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN. Euphemia was maternally descended from 7-Line – The Stewarts in Carnlia and Easter Glentarken.

On 19 Apr 1823, at the age of 22, in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, Catherine Stewart married to Donald McMillan, age 25, from Sron Eadar a Chinn (Stonedrigan), Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. A family photo says, “Donald ‘Daniel’ MacMillan b. 22 Jan 1798 ‘born in the hills north of Callander, which is southeast of Balquhidder’ d. 29 Dec 1870 (though photo of headstone from Vera looks like 8 Dec) Lamlash, Isle of Arran.
Catherine and Donald began their family in her family home of Stronvar, having two children there.
In 1826, Catherine and Donald moved from Balquhidder to Kilmichael farm in Brodick parish on the Isle of Arran in Bute, Scotland where they had seven more children between 1827-1842.
“Donald McMillan was a shepherd on the Kilmichael estate; the only land on Arran not belonging to the Duke & Duchess of Hamilton. The estate had been given to a Fullarton family by King Robert the Bruce for services rendered in the 1400s…. [Glencoy and Kilmichael farms were] “managed by Donald M’Millan” [who was] “known as The Shepherd” [and who] “had a fine personality, and was much respected by the people of Brodick and elsewhere for his kindness and uprightness.” (Inglis, James C., Brodick Old and New, Arthur Guthrie & Sons Ltd., 1935)

Robert Stewart in Ashinrannoch
He “fled the country” for his “wild behaviour.”
Robert Stewart, in Ashinrannoch, b. Abt 8 Aug 1777, Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN.
Robert Stewart was born in 1777 in Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, to James Ross Stewart and Catherine McLaren.
Stewarts of the South (written about 1815-1818) describes Robert Stewart as “son of Sheumas Ross – Robert Stewart once foreman to Mr Stewart of Ardvurlich now in the same capacity with one Mr Rob at Menstrie Blairlogie parish Sir Ralph Abercrombie’s estate Stirlingshire two sons.”
The Stewarts of Ardvorlich, Vol. 3, which says “Robert, who lived at Ashinranoch, and was a ploughman at Ardvorlich. He married Lizzie MacLaughlan, a servant at Ardvorlich. His son, William, is now (1879) a shopkeeper at Menstrie.” Ashinrannoch no longer exists. but was described as “a croft just where the nursery used to be at Ardvorlich.”
Both of these sources describe Robert Stewart as a farming labourer (either a ploughman or foreman) to the Laird of Ardvorlich and then later residing in Menstrie.
Christina Margaret McIntyre was the youngest daughter of John Lorne Stewart McIntyre, son of Peter McIntyre and Mary Stewart, daughter of James Og Stewart in Stronvar.
On 28 Jan 1795, when Robert was 18-years-old, the Comrie church Session minutes indicate that Mary Dochart, a servant to Mr Stewart of Ardvorlich was pregnant outside of marriage. She identifies “Robert Stewart, servant with Ardvorlich,” as the father. A few months later, on 22 Feb 1795, Robert Stewart and Mary Dochart in Ardvorlich had a son, Duncan, who is described in the parish register as “begotten in fornication.”
No other Robert Stewart contemporary to this time period has been identified in Stewarts of the South, or The Stewarts of Ardvorlich, Vols 1-3 & Supplement as a servant at Ardvorlich. Thus, it appears that Robert Stewart in Ashinrannoch is the father of Mary Dochart’s son, Duncan.
Just three months later, on 17 May 1795, the Comrie church Session minutes indicate that Catherine Dochart, servant maid to Mr McNab at Dundurn was pregnant by Robert Stewart, servant to the said Mr. McNab. The Comrie parish register shows on 9 July 1795 an incomplete entry for Robert Stewart, Dundurn. which says nothing else other than his name. It is followed immediately by an entry dated, 19 Aug 1795, which says that Robert Stewart and Catherine Dochart had a daughter Cathrine. Neither Stewarts of the South nor The Stewarts of Ardvorlich, Vols 1-3 & Supplement identify any Robert Stewart that was a servant at Dundurn.
It is suggested that Robert Stewart in Dundurn is the same person as Robert Stewart (formerly) in Ashinrannoch and that he is the father of both illegitimate children by Mary Dochart and Catherine Dochart. It is possible that Mary Dochart and Catherine Dochart could have been sisters. It is further suggested that Robert Stewart may have been dismissed from his service at Ardvorlich for getting the maid pregnant and went to work nearby for McNab of Dundurn where he did the same thing and was fired again and thus ended up way down in Logie working for Mr Rob at Menstrie. It is further suggested that his conduct matches the description in the McIntyre Letter – 1908, of the brother of James Og Stewart who had to “flee the country” for his “wild behaviour.”
In 1805, at age 27, Robert Stewart married in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland to Lizzie MacLaughlan.
In 1841, at age 60, Robert Stewart was residing in Menstrie, Clackmannashire, Scotland, with his wife and children: Mary Stewart 20, John Stewart 15 (sic), Elizabeth Stewart 15, and William Stewart 14. Robert was employed as an agricultural labourer.
In 1851, at age 77, Robert Stewart was residing at the Sabbath School in Menstrie, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, with his wife and children: Mary Stewart 32, and William Stewart 24. Also residing with them was his granddaughter, Cathrine Mustard 13 and grandson, William Forsyth (7 months). Robert was employed as a farm servant. No birth records have been found for the grandchildren shown here. Their parents are unknown.
Family
Robert Stewart in Ashinrannoch is believed to have had relations with Mary Dochart, b. Abt 1775, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN, by whom he had the following illegitimate child:
1. Duncan Stewart, b. 22 Feb 1795, Ardvorlich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN
Duncan Stewart, b. 22 Feb 1795, Ardvorlich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN.
Duncan Stewart was the illegitimate son of Robert Stewart and Mary Dochart who were both servants at Ardvorlich at the time. His later whereabouts is unknown. He has not been identified in later records.
Some online genealogies claim that he is the Duncan Stewart who moved to St Marylebone, St Pancras, Middlesex, England, before 1851 where he had a family and then later immigrated to Geelong, Victoria, Australia, where he died in 1863. However, there is no evidence to support this claim and it has been refuted by Y-DNA evidence.
The 1851 census for St Marylebone, St Pancras, Middlesex, England, shows a Duncan Stewart born about 1795 in Scotland. It does not indicate where in Scotland he was born. Some researchers have suggested that he was this Duncan Stewart born 1795 in Ardvorlich, illegitimate son of Robert Stewart and Mary Dochart, based on an incorrect identification for his wife as coming from Comrie parish, Perthshire, Scotland. Her connection to Comrie has also been refuted. Furthermore, the Stewarts of Ardvorlich Y-DNA signature is R-M269>R-DF41>S775>R-L745>FGC34909>Z38845>R-Y60195 which does not match the Y-DNA of a descendant of the Duncan Stewart who lived in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, which is R-FT28897.
Robert Stewart in Ashinrannoch is believed to have had relations with Catherine Dochart, b. Abt 1775, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN, by whom he had the following illegitimate child:

On 17 May 1795, the Comrie church Session minutes indicate that Catherine Dochart, servant maid to Mr McNab at Dundurn was pregnant by Robert Stewart, “servant to the said Mr. McNab.” The Comrie parish register shows on 9 July 1795 an incomplete entry for Robert Stewart, Dundurn. which says nothing else other than his name. It is followed immediately by an entry dated, 19 Aug 1795, which says that Robert Stewart and Catherine Dochart had a daughter Cathrine. Neither Stewarts of the South nor The Stewarts of Ardvorlich Vols 1-3 & Supplement identify any Robert Stewart who was a servant at Dundurn. It is possible that he is the same Robert who fathered the child with Mary Dochart just months prior and that perhaps he was dismissed from his service at Ardvorlich for getting the maid pregnant and went to work for McNab of Dundurn where he did the same thing and was fired again and thus ended up way down in Logie working for Mr Rob at Menstrie.
