The Stewarts in Walbeich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
4 Line of the Stewarts of Dalveich
The Stewarts of Walbeich originate in Glen Beich on the north shore of Loch Earn in historic Highland Perthshire, Scotland (present-day Stirling Council Area). Like many branches of the Stewarts of Dalveich, by the mid-1800s most of this family had left Highland Perthshire with their favoured destination being Renfrew, Ontario, Canada.
The Birch Woods of Glen Beich after which Glen Beich (“glen of the birch woods”), Dalveich (“dale of the birch woods”), Ardveich (“height of the birch woods”), Beich Burn (“creek of the birch woods”) and Walbeich (“settlement of the birch woods”) are all named.

Ancestors of the Stewarts in Walbeich
The Stewarts in Walbeich descend from the Stewarts of Dalveich, who descend from the Stewarts of Ardvorlich who are the senior branch of the Stewarts of Balquhidder.

Walbeich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
The exact location of Walbeich is unknown. It derives its name from the same rootword, “beich” (meaning “birch woods”), as Dalveich, Ardveich, Glen Beich and the Beich Burn. It may derive from Bhaile-Bheathaich = “township of the birch woods.” So it is presumed that Walbeich was a short-lived clachan located somewhere in Glen Beich, but it has not been found on any maps.

4 Line – The Stewarts in Walbeich
The fourth line of the Dalveich Stewarts as presented in Stewarts of the South is a family who lived in Walbeich, Glen Beich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. They are presented in Stewarts of the South as follows:
Daniel Stewart – was once a tacksman in Walbeich (and is presumably dead in ca. 1815). He left four sons:
- John Stewart, a tacksman at Gartnafuaran, which was once the property of Stewart of Don in Balquhidder parish, but is now Sir John McGregor’s estate. He has three sons — one adult and two minors.
- Duncan Stewart, of Summerline flanders Moss. He has two sons — one adult who is a smith and the other who is a minor
- Lieutenant Alexander Stewart, of the P Militia, who is now a feuer in St Fillans, Comrie parish, on Drummond’s estate. He has two sons — one who is a student of Divinity and the other who is a minor by a second marriage.
- Donald Stewart of Summerline flanders Moss. He left one son (presumably an adult son). (Donald Stewart is presumably dead by ca. 1815).
Donald? mac Iain Dubh Mhor Stewart
Our narrative begins with Donald? mac Iain Dubh Mhor Stewart, shown here as a son of John Dubh Mhor Stewart, founder of the Stewarts of Dalveich. Donald’s first name is shown with a question mark (?) because his first name is not known for certain or confirmed. This is explained below.
John Dubh Mhor Stewart, of Dalveich, b. Abt 1630, Ardvorlich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Abt 1732, Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland (Age ~ 102 years). He was the founder of the Stewarts of Dalveich clan. His information can be found on our Stewarts of Dalveich page. He was the father of eight sons, including:
-
- Donald? mac Iain Dubh Mhor Stewart, b. Abt 1670, Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN. John Dubh Mhor Stewart of Dalveich had eight sons who all grew to adulthood and had descendants. Following traditional custom, his second son would have been named after his father-in-law whose name is unknown. According to the Atholl Hunting Rolls, John Stewart (presumably our John Dubh Mhor) and Donald McCara were joint-tenants in Carnlia in 1667. As the name Donald/Daniel became prominent in the first four of John’s eight descendant lines, then this strongly suggests that John likely married a daughter of Donald McCara. In which case, following tradition, he would have named his second son, Donald. Donald is suggested as the patriarch of 2 Line – The Stewarts in Greenloaning, 3 Line – The Stewarts in Ardveich, Lochearnhead and Keip, and possibly also of 4 Line – The Stewarts in Walbeich (this page).
Based on our current interpretation of known evidence, it is suggested that Donald? mac Iain Dubh Mhor Stewart may have had the following sons, though we are not certain exactly how Lines 2, 3 & 4 actually descend from John Dubh Mhor Stewart.
1. "Line 2" Stewart, b. Abt 1700, Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN
“Line 2” Stewart, b. Abt 1700, Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN.
This person’s information is presented on our Stewarts in Greenloaning page.
2. John? Stewart, in Ardveich, b. Abt 1705, probably Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, d. Abt 1746, Unknown (Age ~ 41 years)
John? Stewart, in Ardveich, b. Abt 1705, probably Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Abt 1746, Unknown (Age ~ 41 years)
This person’s name is not known for certain but is suggested to be John. His information is presented below.
3. Duncan Stewart, in Lochearnhead, b. Abt 1708, probably Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN
Duncan Stewart, in Lochearnhead, b. Abt 1708, probably Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN.
Duncan Stewart’s information is presented on our 3-Line The Stewarts in Ardveich, Lochearnhead & Keip page.
4. Daniel Stewart, in Walbeich, b. Abt 1710, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN
Daniel Stewart, in Walbeich, b. Abt 1710, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN.
Information on Daniel Stewart and his descendants is found on our 4 Line – The Stewarts in Walbeich page.
4 Line – The Stewarts in Walbeich descend from Daniel Stewart in Walbeich, who is suggested to be the youngest son of Donald? mac Iain Dubh Mhor Stewart in Dalveich. His descendants are presented below.
Daniel Stewart in Walbeich
Daniel Stewart, in Walbeich, b. Abt 1710, Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN. Daniel is shown above as being the youngest son of Donald? mac Iain Dubh Mhor Stewart.
Daniel Stewart in Walbeich is recorded in Stewarts of the South as being a descendant of John Dubh Mhor Stewart in Dalveich, but Daniel’s exact relationship to John is not given. Chronology would suggest that Daniel is most likely a grandson, with only one intervening generation being unknown.
Daniel is a substitute name for Donald. Daniel is given in Stewarts of the South as the patriarch of 4 Line of the Stewarts of Dalveich. This branch resided in Walbeich. No such place has been identified on any maps, but its name would suggest that it was located somewhere in Glen Beich. It may be an Anglicization of Bhalbeich, or Balbeich, suggesting “farmstead of the birch trees”.
Daniel’s parentage is not known. He is shown here as a son of Donald? mac Iain Dubh Mhor Stewart in Wester Ardveich simply because he fits chronologically and onomastically as well as fitting the accounting pattern of Stewarts of the South.
Daniel is described in Stewarts of the South as “once a tacksman in Walbeich” and also as the father of John, Duncan, Lt. Alexander, and Donald. However current research suggests that Stewarts of the South is off by one generation and that Daniel is actually the grandfather of these four brothers, with their father being Robert Stewart, as shown here. All of the four sons named in Stewarts of the South had eldest sons named Robert, strongly suggesting that their father was named Robert. There is a family headed by a Robert Stewart in Dalveich whose children match almost perfectly with the sons shown for this branch. One possible explanation for this discrepancy could be if Robert died prematurely and his children were raised by their grandfather, Daniel. In which case, the author of Stewarts of the South may not have known Robert. Or the author just accidently skipped a generation.
Daniel Stewart is suggested as the father of:
-
- Robert Stewart, in Dalveich, b. Abt 1735, probably Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN.
Robert’s information is presented below.
- Robert Stewart, in Dalveich, b. Abt 1735, probably Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN.
Robert Stewart in Dalveich
Robert Stewart, in Dalveich, b. Abt 1735, probably Wester Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN.
Robert Stewart is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South. Nothing is known about him other than that he married on 18 Dec 1756 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland Janet Stewart, b. Abt 1740, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN. They had the following children:
1. Alexander Stewart, b. Abt 22 Jan 1758, Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, d. Bef 1771, Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
Alexander Stewart, b. Abt 22 Jan 1758, Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Bef 1771, Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland (Age ~ 12 years).
Alexander is presumed to have died young prior to the birth of his same-named younger brother in 1771.
2. John Stewart, in Gartnafuaran, b. Abt 12 Apr 1761, Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, d. UNKNOWN
John Stewart, in Gartnafuaran, b. Abt 12 Apr 1761, Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN.
John is described in Stewarts of the South as “a tacksman at Gartnafuaran, which was once the property of Stewart of Don in Balquhidder parish, but is now (ca.1815-20) Sir John McGregor’s estate.” This reference is confusing as Sir John McGregor did not own Gartnafuaran and “Stewart of Don” is not a recognized name. Given the incompleteness of this account, it’s likely that the author of Stewarts of the South has made errors here and did not know this family well.
John Stewart is described as having three sons, one adult and two minors around 1815. Nothing more is known of John’s family.

Donald is described in Stewarts of the South as follows:
“Donald Stewart of Summerline flanders Moss. He left one son (presumably an adult son). (Donald Stewart is presumably dead by ca. 1815).”
Donald’s family is described in the Appendix of Stewarts of the South as follows:
“Widow of Donald Stewart with her son, of the Ardvorlich family, who was a good-hearted friendly man.”
Donald and his family can be found in the 1814 Blair Drummond Moss Census as follows:

The descriptions in Stewarts of the South match with what we find in the 1814 Blair Drummond Moss census and the Kincardine OPR which show that Donald had two sons named Robert who both died in childhood and one son, Peter, who was born just prior to the authorship of Stewarts of the South.
Donald Stewart married on 14 Feb 1801 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet Ferguson, b. 1771, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN, Rossburn Lane, Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland . They had the following children:

Peter is recorded in Stewarts of the South as being alive at the time of authorship. He has not been found in any later census records and may have died young or emigrated.
Duncan Stewart in Rossburn
Duncan Stewart, in Rossburn, b. Abt 12 Oct 1765, Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN. Duncan was the 4th son of Robert Stewart in Dalveich, show further above.
Duncan’s name is given in the Balquhidder OPR as “Alexander” at his time of birth. This has been confirmed in the original OPR and is not a transcription error. However the fact that the OPR shows Robert having three sons all named Alexander is suspicious to begin with. Plus the second “Alexander” matches perfectly with what we know of Robert’s son, Duncan. Thus, it is suggested that one of two things happened: either the parish clerk recorded the wrong name in the OPR, or Robert’s first son, Alexander, had already died so Robert initially named this son, Alexander, then changed his mind and called this son Duncan and named his following son Alexander — or we have made an error in accounting Robert as the father of this family.
Duncan is described in Stewarts of the South as: “Duncan Stewart, of Summerline flanders Moss. He has two sons — one adult who is a smith and the other who is a minor.” He is an exact match for the Duncan Stewart found in the 1814 Blair Drummond Moss Census residing at 9 Rossburn Lane:
Former Possessor: Alexander Stewart
Present Possessor: Duncan Stewart 50 yrs
Mary Campbell 50 “
Children:
Robert 26 yrs
John 16 “
Jenny 13 “
Persons deceased: None
Years Settled on the Moss: 18 years
Where they came from: Lochearnside
Cats 1, Poultry 2, Cows 2
The Appendix of Stewarts of the South shows only three Duncan Stewarts listed as residing on The Moss:
-
- Duncan Stewart, in the above place (Summerline Flander’s Moss), and of the same family (Glenbuckie), an industrious character
- Duncan Stewart, Summerline Flander’s Moss, Glenbuckie family, a middling, industrious character
- Duncan Stewart, same place (Summerline Flander’s Moss), Ardvorlich family, an industrious character
When we compare these entries with their corresponding entries in the main family genealogy sections of Stewarts of the South it is immediately clear that the two Glenbuckie references are not even close to matching the description of the Duncan Stewart residing at 9 Rossburn Lane. The third entry refers to Duncan, descendant of Daniel Stewart in Walbeich, as shown here, whom we have already shown is an exact match. Thus, we can state with confidence that the Duncan Stewart residing at 9 Rossburn Lane and Duncan Stewart of the Stewarts in Walbeich, are a perfect match for each other and they represent the only corresponding match between Stewarts of the South and the 1814 Blair Drummond Moss Census, and thus they must be the same person.
The births of Duncan’s children are easily identifiable in parish records as shown here. Duncan’s first marriage is recorded in the Balquhidder OPR as:
“Duncan Stewart late at Lochearnhead and Margaret McGregor [at] Cuilt both in this parish were married here after their clandestine marriage and paid the dues of 2/6.”
Duncan had one son, Robert, by this marriage. Margaret McGregor presumably died in childbirth or shortly after. Duncan subsequently had relations with Mary Campbell, but there is no record of any marriage.
Duncan’s two sons match perfectly with a Robert and John Stewart who are found residing in 1851 in McNab Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada along with many other descendants of this clan and other former residents from the west end of Loch Earn.
Duncan Stewart married firstly on 1 Jan 1786 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret McGregor, b. Abt 1765, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN. They had the following child:
1. Robert Stewart, b. Abt 5 Apr 1787, Rannag of Glenogle, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, d. 11 Jan 1861, White Lake, McNab, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada
Robert Stewart, b. Abt 5 Apr 1787, Rannag of Glenogle, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. 11 Jan 1861, White Lake, McNab, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada (Age ~ 73 years)
Robert Stewart was born in 1787 in Rannag of Glenogle, Balquhider, Perthshire, Scotland.
The 1814 Blair Drummond Moss Census shows Robert as 26 years old and residing with his father and step-mother at 9 Rossburn Lane. This entry corresponds perfectly with Robert’s birth in the Balquhidder OPR.
About 1815, Stewarts of the South says that Robert Stewart, son of Duncan Stewart in Summerline Moss, was a smith.
On 26 Feb 1826, at age 39, Robert Stewart married in Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland to Jane McNie. Both were from Kincardine.
Between 1828-1831, Robert Stewart along with his wife and their first daughter, immigrated with his wife’s maternal McIntyre cousins to Renfrew, Ontario, Canada as pioneer settlers.
In 1851, at age 65, Robert Stewart was residing in McNab Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada with his wife and children. He was employed as a farmer. Living nearby were several McGregors who could be related to his mother.
In early 1861, Robert died. Later that year in the census, at age 61, his widow Jane McNie was residing in MacNab, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada, with her children, Jean, Robert and Peter, along with Peter’s wife.

-
- Jean Stewart, b. Abt 6 Jan 1828, Summer’s Lane, Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland , d. UNKNOWN. Jean is not found with her parents in 1851 but she could easily have been married by this point.

- Peter McNie Stewart, b. 27 Jan 1838, McNab Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada , d. 1 Jan 1928, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada (Age 89 years). The 1851 census shown only one Peter Stewart residing in McNab Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada, who is shown as born 1838 in Canada, son of Robert and Mrs R. Stewart. He appears identical to the Peter Stewart, born about 1837 in McNab, son of Robert Stewart and Jane McKee (sic), who married on 14 AUG 1860 in McNab, Renfrew, to Mary/Margaret Robertson, born about 1838 in Canada, daughter of James Robertson and Jane Stewart. Death Cert: Robert McNie Stewart, retired farmer, born 29 JAN 1846 in Renfrew, son of Robert Stewart and Jane McNie (both born Scotland), died 10 APR 1933 in Horton, Renfrew.
In 1991 Robert and Margaret are found residing in McNab, Renfrew, with nephew and niece George Burton 13 and Bella Burton 11. They have no children of their own living with them.
Robert McNie Stewart married on 30 Jan 1880 in McNab, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada to Margaret L. McFadyen, b. 14 Oct 1860, Goshen, McNab, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada , d. 2 Jun 1926 (Age 65 years). They had the following child:- Bella Stewart, b. 5 Jun 1880, Ontario, Canada . Bella is not found with her parents in 1891 and is presumed to have died in childhood.
Duncan is presumed to have married secondly abt 1795 to Mary Campbell, b. 1764, Lochearnside, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Aft 1814 (Age > 51 years) although no record of their marriage has been found. They had the following children:
1. John Stewart, b. Abt 16 Aug 1796, Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland, d. 3 Jul 1881, Alice Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
John Stewart, b. Abt 16 Aug 1796, Blair Drummond Moss, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland , d. 3 Jul 1881, Alice Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada (Age ~ 84 years)
John Stewart was born in 1796 at Rossburn Lane on the Blair Drummond Moss in Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland. Later census records indicate that John’s son Robert spoke Gaelic as his first language, so it is presumed that John spoke Gaelic as did all his children.
In 1814, at age 16, John Stewart was residing at 9 Rossburn Lane on the Blair Drummond Moss in Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland, with his parents and older half-brother, Robert, and his younger sister Jenny.
On 9 Dec 1823, at age 27, John Stewart married in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland to Elizabeth (Helen) Dewar. They had four children while presumably living on the Moss between 1824-1830, however the exact locations are not given in their children’s baptismal registrations.
Around 1830-34, John Stewart and his young family immigrated with a large party of fellow Dalveich Stewarts, Carnlia McIntyres and Ardveich MacLarens to settle in Canada. Many of the families went on to Renfrew County in Ontario, but John and his family settled initially in Chatham, Argenteuil, Quebec, Canada, on the north side of the Ottawa River.
In 1842 (age not recorded), he is believed to be the John Stewart residing in Chatham, Deux-Montagnes, Quebec, Canada, employed as a shoemaker with 10 occupants in his house. Those occupants would have included himself, his wife Elizabeth, and their six known children. This totals eight. Given the large gaps in their recorded children’s births during this time period, t’s likely they had another two children born in Quebec for whom no record has been found. Those children have been suggested below.
Life as pioneer settlers in Quebec, especially in the winters, would have been harsh. It appears that perhaps five of their children died in Quebec.
Sometime before 1851, John and his family moved across and up the Ottawa River to McNab Township, Renfew, Ontario, Canada, where his older brother Robert was living.
In 1851, at age 56, John Stewart was residing in McNab, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada, with his wife and four of their children, Janet (22), John (17), Robert (15), and Mary E. (6). John Stewart was employed as a farmer. They were residing only a few farms away from Malcolm McLaren formerly from Glen Ogle.
In 1861, at age 64, John Stewart was residing in McNab, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada, with his wife and children, as well as two of their grandchildren Janet (2) and John (1, son of Robert). He was a farmer.
In 1871, at age 75, John Stewart was residing in McNab, Renfew, Ontario, Canada, in the home of his son, Robert and Robert’s family.
In 1881, at age 84, John Stewart was residing in Alice, Fraser, Renfew, Ontario, Canada, in the home of his daughter Janet Hamilton.
On 3 July 1881, just weeks after the census was taken, John Stewart died.
John Stewart married on 9 Dec 1823 in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland to Elizabeth or Helen Dewar, b. 1798, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Between 1861 and 1871, McNab, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada (Age 63 years). They had the following children:
-
- Mary Stewart, b. 14 Nov 1824, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Between 1842 and 1851, Chatham, Argenteuil, Québec, Canada (Age 17 years). Mary is presumed to have died young prior to the birth of her same-named younger sister in 1844, and possibly prior to her parents emigrating.
- Duncan Stewart, b. 20 Aug 1826, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Between 1842 and 1851, Chatham, Argenteuil, Québec, Canada (Age 15 years). Duncan is not found in the 1851 census and is presumed to have died young.
- Alexander Stewart, b. 26 Oct 1828, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Between 1842 and 1851, Chatham, Argenteuil, Québec, Canada (Age 13 years). Alexander is not found in the 1851 census and is presumed to have died young.
- Janet Stewart, b. 24 Oct 1830, Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland , d. 6 Apr 1914, Powassan, Parry Sound District, Parry Sound County, Ontario, Canada (Age 83 years). Janet Stewart was born in 1830. Her name is incorrectly recorded (or transcribed) as John Stewart. Her exact residence is not recorded, but is presumed to be Rossburn Lane on the Blair Drummond Moss in Kincardine, Perthshire, Scotland. Janet married on 23 Jan 1868 in McNab Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada to James Hamilton, b. 23 Jan 1830, McNab, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada , d. John married in 1866 to Agnes Wilson at which his place of birth is recorded as Chatham, Quebec, Canada. (He is NOT the John Stewart who died 25 MAY 1889 in McNab, Renfrew, age 54, born in McNab.) John Stewart married on 2 Nov 1866 in McNab Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada to Agnes Wilson, b. 1836, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland , d. Bef 1901 (Age < 64 years). They had the following children:- Robert Stewart, b. 1864, McNab Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada , d. UNKNOWN.
Robert Stewart is likely not the son of John Stewart and Agnes Wilson, unless he was illegitimate. He is found residing with John Stewart and Agnes Wilson in the 1881 census. He could be the Robert Stewart born 1862 to Alexander Stewart and Isabella Stewart in McNab whose brother Alexander married Annie Stewart daughter of John Stewart and Agnes Wilson. Or he could be the Robert Stewart born 1862 in McNab to Peter McNie Stewart. In 1881, at age 18, Robert Stewart was residing in the home of John Stewart and Agnes Wilson in McNab, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada. He was employed as a lumberman. His relationship to the family is not given.

Robert and Christiana lived on a farm in Burnstown but never worked the land. He had lost an arm in an accident when he was comparatively young and as a result of this he decided to go into the business world, joining the Massey Harris Co. Christina was always noted for her almost mystical ability to heal people and she spent most of her life tending to sick in the area. She was also a renowned cook and hostess.
The 1911 census indicates that Robert’s first language was Gaelic.
Robert Stewart married on 12 Apr 1860 in McNab, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada to Christena Robertson, b. 24 Jul 1839, McNab, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada , d. 4 Oct 1906, Renfrew, Ontario, Canada (Age 67 years). Janet’s birth is double registered in Kincardine: “1799 Octr 10 Janet, daughter to Duncan Stewart and Mary Campbell baptized after sermon, Moss” and “1799 Octr 21 Janet, daugr to Duncan Stewart and Mary Campbell.”
Nothing more is known of Janet.
Lt. Alexander Stewart, Perthshire Militia, in St. Fillans
Lieutenant Alexander Stewart, b. Abt 27 Apr 1771, Dalveich, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Between 1841 and 1851, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland (Age ~ 69 years)
Alexander is described in Stewarts of the South as “Lieutenant Alexander Stewart, of the P[erthshire] Militia, who is now a feuer in St Fillans, Comrie parish, on Drummond’s estate. He has two sons — one who is a student of Divinity and the other who is a minor by a second marriage.” (ca.1815-20)
The Comrie OPR clearly identifies Alexander’s second marriage in which he is described as “Lieutenant Alexander Stewart…in Comrie” initially and “in St. Fillans” latterly. His first marriage is not so clear. There is only one son born to an Alexander Stewart in Comrie in the preceding few years (that has not been accounted for with another family) and that is William Stewart, bap 17 JAN 1802 in Comrie Village in Comrie parish as the son of “Mr.” Alexander Stewart and Jane(t) Reid. This is the only child for them. They were married on 25 AUG 1800 in Comrie with Alexander described as “in the parish of Balquhidder” and Janet Reid as “in this parish” (Comrie). The specification of “Mr.” is noteworthy as it is very rare in the OPRs of that era. It usually designates one of two things: a clergyman or a minor landowner/feurer. Thus, William’s birth is a near-perfect match for Lieut. Alexander’s first son, except for onomastics. The Fasti Ecclesia confirms that Alexander’s son, William was a student of Divinity.
According to Stewarts of the South, Alexander’s father was named Daniel Stewart in Walbeich. However, current research suggests that his father’s name was more likely Robert and that Robert’s father or grandfather was the Daniel Stewart in Walbeich mentioned in Stewarts of the South. As such, if William is this Alexander’s first son then Alexander violated onomastic custom, possibly because his first wife may have died in childbirth and Alexander chose to honour Janet Reid’s father by naming their son after him instead of his own father, perhaps feeling that he would have another opportunity to name a son after his own father. If so, then the onomastics work just fine. As such, for now we are tentatively suggesting that William could be Alexander’s first son with the preceding uncertainties noted.
The Comrie OPR records Alexander’s second marriage as: “1815, April 6th, Lieut. Alexr Stewart and Margt Comrie, both in this parish, proclaimed themselves and were married on the 8th.”
In 1825, Alexander Stewart named his daughter, Helen Maxton Stewart, after Helen Maxton, wife of William Stewart, 8th of Ardvorlich.
Alexander is found in 1841 residing in Dalginross, just south of the village of Comrie in Comrie parish, Perthshire, Scotland with his wife, Margaret, and daughters, Helen and Margaret.
In 1851, Alexander’s wife is recorded as a widow, thus Alexander died sometime between 1841-1851, but his exact date of death is not known. No death or burial record has been found for him.
Lt. Alexander Stewart married firstly between 23 Aug and 5 Sep 1800 in Balquhidder and Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland to Janet Reid, b. Abt 1875, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. Between 1802 and 1815, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland . They had the following child:
1. Rev. William Stewart, b. Abt 17 Jan 1802, Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, d. 12 Oct 1852, Dundee, Angus, Scotland
Rev. William Stewart, b. Abt 17 Jan 1802, Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland , d. 12 Oct 1852, Dundee, Angus, Scotland (Age ~ 50 years). William Stewart married on 15 May 1834 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland to Mary Key, b. 1801, Angus, Scotland , d. 21 Jan 1854, Dundee, Angus, Scotland (Age 53 years). They had no children.
William Stewart was born in 1802 in Comrie Village, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland as the only son of Lt. Alexander Stewart and his first wife, Janet Reid.
About 1815-1818, in his mid-teens, William is not identified by name, but is described in Stewarts of the South as being the eldest son of Lt. Alexander Stewart in St. Fillans and as “a student of Divinity.”
According to the Fasti Eccleasia, William worked as a carptenter during the summer months to put himself through school part-time and was eventually ordained in 1832 in the Church of Scotland and served the congregation at Lochee near Dundee, Angus, Scotland.
In 1834, Rev. William Stewart married in Dundee, Angus, Scotland, to Mary Key. Her birth family has not been identified.
In 1841, at age 40, Rev. William Stewart was residing in Dudhope, Dundee, Angus, Scotland, with his wife Mary. They had no children. He was employed as a minister of the gospel. (Dudhope and Lochee are one mile apart.)
Rev. William Stewart continued to serve the congregation at Lochee until The Disruption in 1843 when he left to form the Free Church congregation at Dudhope near Dundee, Angus, Scotland.
He died in 1852.
