The Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
Branch III of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie
Known as Clan Sliochd Sheumais mhic Alistir mhic Dhunachy
The Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan are the third cadet branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie. They descend from Duncan “Oig” Stewart, a younger son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie. They emerged at the turn of the 17th century as Foresters in Glen Finglas, to take up residence at Ardcheanochdan on nearby Loch Achray in Callander parish in historic Perthshire, Scotland, in what is now the Trossachs National Park in present-day Stirling Council Area. Ardcheanochdan is an extinct township that was replaced by the Tigh Mor Trossachs Hotel. From that central location their descendants spread out through various farmsteads in lower Strathgartney, and, by the 19th century all across Scotland and as far as the New World in Canada, the USA, and Australia.
This family was called Sliochd Sheumais mhic Alastir mhic Dhunachy, which means, “The seed of James son of Alexander son of Duncan.”

Ardcheanochdan
The name Ardcheanochdan derives from the Gaelic, ard ceann an cnocan, meaning “promontory at the head of the small hill.” It is pronounced “arst-kee-an-nan-krochk-kan.” It is a mouthful to say and spell. Peter McNiven’s Gaelic Placenames in Callander Parish lists thirteen different spellings.
Ardcheanochdan is an extinct large farmstead that was located at the northwest end of Loch Achray in the Trossachs National Park. It was on the site now occupied by the Tigh Mor Trossachs Hotel.
The property was occupied through the 16th-18th centuries by the Stewarts of Glenbuckie and sublet to their cadets and other families.

Ancestors of III-Branch – Sliochd Sheumais mhic Alistir mhic Dhunachy
The Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan are III-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie. The Stewarts of Glenbuckie were the second principal family of the Stewarts of Balquhidder. III-Branch descends specifically from Duncan “Oig” Stewart, a younger son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie. They were known by the name, Sliochd Sheumais mhic Alistir mhic Dhunachy which means “The Seed (or descendants) of James, son of Alexander, son of Duncan.” Their exact line of descent is unclear as explained in detail below.
Descendants of Sliochd Sheumais mhic Alistir mhic Dhunachy
The Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan had five lines of descendants:
-
- 1-Line – James & Alexander Stewart in Ardcheanochdan
- 2-Line – Stewarts in Corriechrombie
- 3-Line – John Stewart in Duart & Donald Stewart in Aldannabreach
- 4-Line – John Dubh Stewart in Glenfinglas
- 5-Line – John Stewart in Wester Brig o’ Turk and Donald Stewart in Aldannabreach
These lines are presented in detail below.

The Confusing Origin of Branches III, IV & V
James, son of Duncan, or James, son of Alexander?
Branches II, III, IV, and V of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie all descend from Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie, whose family is described by Rev. Duncan Stewart, in his 1739 History of the Stewarts, as:
“Duncan, son to Alexander Stewart in Glenbuckie, married first, ___ Campbell of the family of Ardkinglass, secondly, he married Katharine MacGrigor, grand-daughter to Dougal Keir MacGrigor, Predecessor to Innerlochlarig and Glengyle, said to be the last cadet of the Laird of MacGrigor, and had issue: 1 John, 2 Walter, 3 Duncan, 4 Patrick, 5 John Beg, and 6 Alexander.” (Duncan Stewart (1739), p. 132.)
(In order to avoid confusion, we refer to Duncan, the third son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie, as “Duncan Oig”, which means “Young Duncan” or, effectively, “Duncan Junior.”)
Stewarts of the South (c. 1820) describes the origins of these four branches as:
-
- II-Branch – “Commonly called Sliochd Iain Dui Bheig (“Seed of Little Black John”), fifth son of Duncan, (5th) of Glenbuckie”
- III-Branch – “Duncan (‘Oig’) Stewart, brother to Iain Du Beg of Glenbuckie, had three sons: 1st Alexander, his Successor, James & Donald, of James descended… [III-Branch].” This family was called Sliochd Sheumais mhic Alistir mhic Dhunachy (“The Seed of James son of Alexander son of Duncan”).
- IV-Branch – “Donald Stewart brother to foresaid James”. This branch is called Sliochd Dhonal mhic Alastair mhic Dhonachie (“Children of Donald, son of Alexander, son of Duncan”).
- V-Branch – “James Mac Alastir foresaid [who] had a son [who was] a tenant of Lorachans”
II-Branch unambiguously descends from John/Iain Du Beg, son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie. And III, IV and V-Branches all descend from John’s older brother, Duncan “Oig” Stewart. So we can build a partial tree thusly:
Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie:
-
-
- John Du Beg Stewart (patriarch of II-Branch)
- Duncan “Oig” Stewart (patriarch of III-Branch, IV-Branch and V-Branch)
-
(Stewarts of the South appears to present the family of the younger son first because that family is smaller and less complicated.)
III, IV, V-Branch
The problem with Branches III, IV, and V is that the author of Stewarts of the South describes their relationships to each other in two different ways that contradict each other. The result is two conflicting trees depending on which description we follow.
III-Branch
III-Branch opens with the descriptor: Duncan “Oig” Stewart “had three sons: 1st Alexander, his Successor, James & Donald.” It continues, saying “Of James descended…” and then goes on to describe the descendants of III-Branch. This would seem to indicate that III-Branch descends from James, the second son of Duncan “Oig” Stewart. We can now create a tree for the descendants of Duncan “Oig” Stewart which we’ll call the “Descriptor” Tree:
The “Descriptor” Tree
Duncan “Oig” Stewart (brother to Iain Du Beg)
-
-
- Alexander (“his successor”)
- James (“of James descended…” III-Branch)
- Donald
-
However, III-Branch closes with the patronymic: “This finishes the first Branch of Sliochd Sheumais Mhic Alastir mhic Dhunachy” which tells us that III-Branch descends from a person named “James, son of Alexander, son of Duncan.”
We can construct a different partial tree for the origin of III-Branch based on the patronymic, which we’ll call the “Patronymic” Tree:
The “Descriptor” Tree
Duncan “Oig” Stewart (brother to Iain Du Beg)
-
-
- Alexander (“his successor”)
- James (“of James descended…” III-Branch)
- Donald
-
The “Patronymic” Tree
Duncan (“Oig”) Stewart
-
-
- Alexander Stewart (“his successor”)
- James mac Alistir mac Duncan Stewart (patriarch of III-Branch)
- Alexander Stewart (“his successor”)
-
These two trees contradict each other. James cannot be the second son of Duncan “Oig” Stewart if he is the son of Alexander, as given by his patronymic.
The author of Stewarts of the South also says “this finishes the first Branch” which tells us that IV-Branch presumably descends from the same person.
IV-Branch
Stewarts of the South emphasizes the continuity between III and IV-Branch by continuing the line numbering across both branches. III-Branch numbers its lines 1-5 and IV-Branch starts with 6-Line.
IV-Branch opens with “Donald Stewart brother to foresaid James” and closes with “This finishes Sliochd Dhonal mhic Alastair mhic Dhonachie” (“Children of Donald, son of Alexander, son of Duncan.”) Which “foresaid James” is the descriptor referring to? We have two different interpretations as to where James fits in the family tree. Which interpretation we choose determines where we place Donald in the tree. Donald is either the brother of James, son of Duncan “Oig” Stewart or Donald is the son of Alexander, son of Duncan “Oig” Stewart.
The “Descriptor” Tree
Duncan “Oig” Stewart (brother to Iain Du Beg)
-
-
- Alexander (“his successor”)
- James (“of James descended…” III-Branch)
- Donald (“brother to foresaid James”) (patriarch of IV-Branch)
-
The “Patronymic” Tree
Duncan (“Oig”) Stewart
-
-
- Alexander Stewart (“his successor”)
- James mac Alistir mac Duncan Stewart (“of James descended…” III-Branch)
- Donald mac Alistir mac Duncan Stewart (“brother to foresaid James”) (patriarch of IV-Branch)
- Alexander Stewart (“his successor”)
-
V-Branch
V-Branch originates with “James Mac Alastir foresaid [who] had a son [who was] a tenant of Lorachans.” This appears to say that V-Branch and III-Branch descend from the same James. (The author could have shown them both as one branch but appears to have separated them into two branches because of the large size of both branches.)
Now our two trees look like this:
The “Descriptor” Tree
Duncan “Oig” Stewart (brother to Iain Du Beg)
-
-
- Alexander (“his successor”)
- James (“of James descended…”)
- a son who was patriarch of III-Branch
- a son who was tenant in Lorachans and was patraiarch of V-Branch
- Donald (“brother to foresaid James”) (patriarch of IV-Branch)
-
The “Patronymic” Tree
Duncan (“Oig”) Stewart
-
-
- Alexander Stewart (“his successor”)
- James mac Alistir mac Duncan Stewart (“of James descended…”)
- a son who was patriarch of III-Branch
- a son who was tenant in Lorachans and was patraiarch of V-Branch
- Donald mac Alistir mac Duncan Stewart (“brother to foresaid James”) (patriarch of IV-Branch)
- James mac Alistir mac Duncan Stewart (“of James descended…”)
- Alexander Stewart (“his successor”)
-
Both of these trees cannot be true. We must choose to follow either the opening descriptors or the patronymics as they contradict each other.
Resolving the Contradiction
Either tree could be correct. Or some combination of them may be correct. It’s possible that it’s merely coincidental that Duncan “Oig” Stewart had three sons named Alexander, James and Donald, and that Alexander himself also had sons named James and Donald. If so, then the “Patronymic” tree is correct and Alexander’s brothers, James and Donald, had no surviving male-line families. Whereas, in order to fit the known descendant lines into the tree chronologically, the “Descriptor” tree is more likely correct.
We cannot be certain what the exact origin is of Branches III, IV, and V. Thus we can say only that the descendant lines of Branches III, IV, and V descend by uncertain means from James, Alexander and Donald who are in some manner descended from Duncan “Oig” Stewart, third son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie.
The mechanics of a database makes it necessary for us to choose one of these interpretations with no clear weight of evidence to prefer one over the other. Thus, for now, our online database follows the Patronymic tree.
III-Branch – Clan Sliochd Sheumais mhic Alistir mhic Dhunachy
In Ardcheanochdan
III-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie originate with a family who were tenants and tacksmen at Ardcheanochdan in Strathgartney, on the north shore of Loch Achray in Callander parish in historic Perthshire, Scotland. The senior line of this family were also hereditary Foresters in Glen Finglas for the Earl of Moray.
According to Stewarts of the South (c.1820), Ardcheanochdan was divided among four families, including this branch and and III-Branch of the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran. The author calls this family “a real friendly and clannish branch.”
Stewarts of the South tells us that this branch descends from Duncan “Oig” Stewart, third son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie. The family patronymic, Sliochd Sheumais mhic Alistir mhic Dhunachy — “The Seed of James, son of Alexander, son of Duncan” tells us more specifically that this branch descends from James, son of Alexander, son of Duncan. However, there are multiple possible interpretations of this patronymic as outlined in the previous section above. At present, we interpret the origin of this branch to be:
Duncan “Oig” Stewart, 3rd son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie
Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie Deputy Royal Forester in Glen Finglas, b. Bef 1552, Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. Aft 1586. Duncan Stewart had six sons (and unknown daughters). His full family is described on our Stewarts of Glenbuckie page. Duncan Stewart’s third son was:
Duncan Oig Stewart, of III-IV-V Branch Forester in Glen Finglas, b. Abt 1585, Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. UNKNOWN. Duncan “Oig” Stewart is identified in Rev. Duncan Stewart’s 1739 History of the Stewarts as being the third son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie:
“Duncan, son to Alexander Stewart in Glenbuckie, married first, ___ Campbell of the family of Ardkinglass, secondly, he married Katharine MacGrigor, grand-daughter to Dougal Keir MacGrigor, Predecessor to Innerlochlarig and Glengyle, said to be the last cadet of the Laird of MacGrigor, and had issue: 1 John, 2 Walter, 3 Duncan, 4 Patrick, 5 John Beg, and 6 Alexander.” (Duncan Stewart (1739), p. 132.)
We are choosing to identify this Duncan as Duncan “Oig” Stewart (“Young Duncan” or roughly equivalent to “Duncan Junior”) in order to differentiate him from his same-named father.
Stewarts of the South agrees with Duncan Stewart (1739) in describing Duncan “Oig” Stewart as “Duncan Stewart, brother to Iain Du Beg of Glenbuckie” and goes on to say that he “had three sons: 1st Alexander, his Successor, James & Donald.” He is also identified as the partriarch of III, IV, and V-Branches. However, the descriptors for these three branches contain contraditions and cannot be reconciled as described in the document. The accounting shown here represents our best attempt to reconcile the conflicting descriptions.
According to Stewarts of the South, 1-Line of the Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan (III-Branch) “were long time foresters of Glenfinglas under [the] Glenbuckie family.”
Duncan “Oig” Stewart’s wife (or wives) is unknown. He had the following sons (and unknown daughters:
-
-
- Alexander mac Dhunachy Stewart, of III and V Branches, Forester in Glen Finglas, b. Abt 1610, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. UNKNOWN.Alexander is believed to be the patriach of III-Branch – Clan Sliochd Sheumais mhic Alistir mhic Dhunachy and V-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie.
According to Stewarts of the South, 1-Line of the Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan and Duart (III-Branch) were “were a long time foresters of Glenfinglas under [the] Glenbuckie family.”
Alexander Stewart is believed to have had the following son by an unknown mother. He may have had additional children who are not identified in Stewarts of the South:
- James mac Alastir mhic Dhunachy Stewart, of III-Branch, Forester in Glen Finglas, b. Abt 1640, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. UNKNOWN.
According to Stewarts of the South, 1-Line of the Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan and Duart were “were a long time foresters of Glenfinglas under [the] Glenbuckie family.”James is believed to be the patriarch of Lines 1-5 of the Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan and Duart as shown below.
- James mac Alastir mhic Dhunachy Stewart, of III-Branch, Forester in Glen Finglas, b. Abt 1640, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
- James mac Dhunachy Stewart, b. Abt 1613, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. UNKNOWN. Based on our current interpretation of the contradictory origins of this family, James is believed to have had no male descendants. However, this is uncertain. - Donald mac Dhunachy Stewart, of IV-Branch, b. Abt 1616, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. UNKNOWN. Based on our current interpretation of the contradictory origins of this family, Donald is believed to have had no male descendants. However, this is uncertain.
- Alexander mac Dhunachy Stewart, of III and V Branches, Forester in Glen Finglas, b. Abt 1610, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland

The following five lines descend by uncertain means from James mac Alastir mhic Dhunachy Stewart, believed to be a grandson of Duncan “Oig” Stewart, son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie, as shown here. The intervening generations are not known.
UPDATE PENDING FOR 1-LINE
1-Line – James & Alexander Stewart in Ardcheanochdan
1-Line descends by uncertain means from James, son of Alexander, son of Duncan “Oig” Stewart, son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie, as shown above. The intervening generations are unknown.
Stewarts of the South omits the label “1-Line” in the original transcription and describes the family as shown here. Paragraph deliniations would suggest that the following is 1-Line:
James Stewart, formerly [a] Tenant in Glenfinglas, again of Ardcheanenock, Locheathrin (Loch Katrine), [on] Drummond’s estate, [in] Calander parish. They were a long time forresters of Glenfinglas under [the] Glenbuckie family.
Alexander Stewart, late tacksman [of] Ardcheanchnock, left one son:
- James, a grocer in Glasgow — a well doing and industrious man [who has]
- three sons
The relationship between “James Stewart, formerly [a] Tenant in Glenfinglas, again of Ardcheanenock” and “Alexander Stewart, late tacksman of Ardcheanock” is not indicated in the text. It could be that James was the father of Alexander, or they could be brothers or close cousins. As the text does not state that James was the father of Alexander then it is presently interpreted that they were brothers, but their relationship is uncertain.
This family has not been identified in parish records, census records or other records. We presently account for this family as follows:
_____ (Alexander?) Stewart, of 1-Line, Forester in Glen Finglas, b. Abt 1690, Glen Finglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. UNKNOWN. (He is the most likely candidate to be the Alexander Stewart in Ardcheanochdan who married (likely secondly) on 4 Dec 1842 in Calander to Beatrix Stewart in Achaladar who was previously married to John McLaren, in Invernenty, known as “Baron Stoibchon”, who was murdered in 1736 by Robin Og McGregor, son of the late Rob Roy McGregor.) Beatrix Stewart may have been the mother of one or both of the children below if their births were later than previously believed.
-
- James Stewart, in Ardcheanochdan, Forester in Glen Finglas, b. Abt 1720, Glen Finglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. Bef 1815, Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
.James Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as:”James Stewart, formerly [a] Tenant in Glenfinglas, again of Ardcheanenock, Locheathrin (Loch Katrine), [on] Drummond’s estate, [in] Calander parish. They were a long time forresters of Glenfinglas under [the] Glenbuckie family.”James was the eldest of 1-Line of the Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan and Duart (III-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie.)
Stewarts of the South does not mention any children for James Stewart, thus it is believed that he had no children. He was deceased by the time Stewarts of the South was written c. 1815.
- Alexander Stewart, in Ardcheanochdan, b. Abt 1725, Glen Finglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. Bef 1815, Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
Alexander Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South (c. 1815) as:”Alexander Stewart, late tacksman [of] Ardcheanchnock, left one son: James, a grocer in Glasgow — a well doing and industrious man [who has three sons.”The text implies that Alexander was deceased at the time of writing.
Alexander was father of:
- James Stewart, Grocer in Glasgow, b. Abt 1750, Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. UNKNOWN.James Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as the son of Alexander Stewart, as a well-doing, industrious man, and as a grocer in Glasgow with three (adult aged) sons. James and his sons have not been identified in parish records.
- James Stewart, Grocer in Glasgow, b. Abt 1750, Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
- James Stewart, in Ardcheanochdan, Forester in Glen Finglas, b. Abt 1720, Glen Finglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
2 Line – Stewarts in Corriechrombie
2-Line descends by uncertain means from James, son of Alexander, son of Duncan “Oig” Stewart, son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie, as shown above. The intervening generations are unknown.
Stewarts of the South description of 2-Line
2-Line is described in Stewarts of the South as:
John Stewart, once tacksman [of] Ardcheanchnock, [is] now in Coircromby near Callander [which property was] purchased by the Earl of Murray from Drummond of Perth. This lot consist of Bochastill, Tarndown & Coircromby, which cost £15000. [The] foresaid John [is] yet alive [and has] four sons:
- James, a Lieutenant [who] died in east India
- Duncan, who made application to yourself for a letter [and has] gone to the west Indies and is doing well
- Alexander, a cattle dealer with his father
- Donald, [who is] at home with himself
John Stewart is an honest man pays £75 of rent
_____ (John or James?) Stewart in Ardcheanochdan
_____ Stewart, in Ardcheanochdan, b. Abt 1725, Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. UNKNOWN.
The father of John Stewart in Corriechrombie (below) is unknown.
It is tempting to suggest from the fact that John’s eldest recorded son was James that his father’s name was also James. This suggestion is supported by the fact that 2-Line of the Stewarts in Ardcheanchdan and Duart descend from James mac Alistir mhic Donnachaidh Stewart.
However, his name may actually be John and the following family could be his family:
- John and Janet Steuarts in Ardihanibrochan had a son on 26 Dec 1716, bapt 31 Dec 1716, named Alexander
John Stewart in Corriechrombie’s first wife already had three children from a previous marriage. The first of which was named John. Thus, John Stewart in Corriechrombie may have not felt the need to re-use the name John for his first biological son, if he already had an adopted son named John.
The only family shown for 2-Line is James’s son John Stewart in Corriechrombie. Thus it is presumed that John Stewart in Corriechrombie had no brothers remaining alive in Scotland c. 1815.
_____ Stewart was the father of:
John Stewart in Corriechrombie
John Stewart, in Corriechrombie, b. Abt 1740, Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. Aft 1815 (Age > 76 years). John Stewart’s birth record has not been found. His year of birth is estimated based on the ages of his children and the estimated age of his wife. His birth location is not confirmed but his birth family resided in Ardcheanochdan.
John Stewart belongs to 2-Line of the Stewarts in Ardcheanochdan and Duart (III-Branch of the Stewarts of Glenbuckie). He is described in Stewarts of the South as:
“John Stewart, once tacksman [of] Ardcheanchnock, [is] now in Coircromby near Callander [which property was] purchased by the Earl of Murray from Drummond of Perth. This lot consist of Bochastill, Tarndown & Coircromby, which cost £15000. [The] foresaid John [is] yet alive [and has] four sons:
1. James, a Lieutenant [who] died in east India
2. Duncan, who made application to yourself for a letter [and has] gone to the west Indies and is doing well
3. Alexander, a cattle dealer with his father
4. Donald, [who is] at home with himself
John Stewart is an honest man pays £75 of rent.”
Marriage and Children
The Stewarts of Ardvorlich, Vol. 3, says that “Christie Stewart of the Ardveich family” married secondly to John Stewart of Coirchrombie. John Stewart married on 25 Apr 1779 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
as the second husband to Christian Stewart, in Keip, after her first husband (also named John Stewart) died. She was b. Abt 1742, Ardveich, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. Aft 1790 (Age > 49 years). She had a family of three young children from her first marriage who became step-children to John Stewart in Corriechrombie.
John Stewart in Corriechrombie’s step-children from his wife’s first marriage include:
-
- John Stewart, of the Grodich, b. 12 Feb 1773, Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland

More information on these children and their birth father’s family can be found on our Bain Stewarts in Auchnahard page.
John Stewart had the following children with his wife, Christie Stewart:
1. Lt. James Stewart in India, b. 24 Apr 1780, Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, d. Bef 1815, India
Lt. James Stewart, b. 24 Apr 1780, Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. Bef 1815, India
(Age < 34 years).
James is described in Stewarts of the South as: “James, a Lieutenant [who] died in east India”. He is believed to have had no children. Nothing more is known of Lt. James Stewart.
2. Duncan Stewart in the West Indies, b. 23 Aug 1782, Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, d. Aft 1815, West Indies, Caribbean
Duncan Stewart in the West Indies, b. 23 Aug 1782, Ardcheanochdan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. Aft 1815, West Indies, Caribbean
(Age > 34 years).
Duncan is described in Stewarts of the South as: “Duncan, who made application to yourself (Maj. Gen. David Stewart of Garth) for a letter [and has] gone to the West Indies and is doing well.”
It is unclear from this reference if Duncan Stewart had a family in the West Indies.
3. Alexander Stewart, in Corriechrombie, b. Abt 19 Feb 1786, Corriechrombie, Strathyre, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, d. 10 Dec 1859, Corriechrombie, Strathyre, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland

Donald Stewart, b. Abt 1790, Corriechrombie, Strathyre, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. Aft 1815 (Age > 26 years).
Donald’s birth record has not been identified. He is described in Stewarts of the South as: “Donald, [who is] at home with himself.”
It is not known if Donald married or had children as any family he might have had likely post-dated the writing of Stewarts of the South.

The Huron Road is a historic roadway in southwestern Ontario, Canada, originally built by the Canada Company in the 1820s to connect the town of Goderich on Lake Huron to Guelph. It was a vital route for settlement and commerce in the Huron Tract, which includes parts of Huron, Perth, Middlesex, and Lambton counties. Today, parts of the Huron Road are followed by Provincial Highway 8 from Goderich to Stratford.

Alexander Stewart, b. Abt 20 Apr 1839, Corriechrombie, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. UNKNOWN.
Alexander Stewart was born on 20 Apr 1839 at Corriechrombie in Strathyre, in Callander parish, Perthshire, Scotland, to Alexander Stewart and Margaret McKinlay. (His birth is missing from our Callander parish register transcription so we don’t know exactly where in Callander he was born, but all other records show his parents residing at Corriechrombie.)
In 1841, at age 7, Alexander Stewart was residing at Corriechrombie, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, with his parents and siblings.
In 1851, at age 16, Alexander Stewart was residing at Corriechrombie, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland with is parents and siblings. He was employed as a farm servant.
Alexander Stewart may or may not have immigrated to Canada. All that can be confirmed is that he was no longer in Callander parish by 1861.
Alexander is claimed by descendants to have immigrated in 1854 to Seaforth, Huron, Ontario, Canada, not far from his brother, John Stewart in Tuckersmith. However, there are so many Alexander Stewarts in Huron County in the mid-1800s with similar family information that online researchers have hopelessly conflated them together in a manner that cannot be unraveled without travelling to Huron County and spending time in the archives.
To further complicate things, Alexander’s alleged wife, Rachel Brown (whose husband, Alexander Stewart, was the son of Alexander Stewart and Margaret Fleming, not Margaret McKinlay, so is probably not this Alexander Stewart) had two sisters who both married men named John Stewart. Thus, three Brown sisters married three Stewarts who may or may not have been related.

4-Line – John Dubh Stewart in Glenfinglas
4-Line descends by uncertain means from James, son of Alexander, son of Duncan “Oig” Stewart, son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie, as shown above. The intervening generations are unknown. 4-Line comprises the sons of John Dubh Stewart who lived in Glen Finglas, but who is not the same person as John Dubh Stewart in Duart, patriarch of 3-Line, above.
This family has not been identified in parish records or other records.
Stewarts of the South description of 4-Line
The presentation of 4-Line in Stewarts of the South is unclear. The patronymic “mac Iain Duibh” indicates that Alastir and Donald are sons of John Dubh Stewart. This is most likely a different John Dubh Stewart from 3-Line (above) as each is shown with a son named Alexander (Alistir). The numbering of Duncan as “2d” (second) is ambiguous, but appears to refer to the second son of Walter, with the first son being un-named.

Duncan Stewart in Crachavie – Shepherd at Ledcreich – and Agnes McGregor
Duncan Stewart, in Crachavie, b. 10 Mar 1793, Coilantogle, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
, d. 1864, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
(Age 70 years). Duncan was a son of Walter Stewart in Glen Finglas, shown above.
Duncan Stewart was born about 1791 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland (according to the 1841 census). His exact birth record has not been confirmed however the birth on 10 Mar 1793 as a son of Walter Stewart and Margaret Ferguson, as shown here, is an excellent match for the information found in Stewarts of the South as well as chronology and onomastics.
Duncan Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as being the second son of Walter Stewart, formerly in Glen Finglas; as a cottager in Duncraggan; and presently (c. 1815-1820) employed as a shepherd at Ledcreich in Balquhidder. (Duncraggan and Crachavie are adjacent farms.)
“Walter Stewart, once [a] Tacksman of one eighth of Glenfinglas, left two sons [who are] now cottagers [in] Duncragan [on] Sir Pat Murrays estate [in] Callander parish [which was] bought from Perth family….
Duncan Stewart…, [who is a] shepherd in Leadchrich [in the] Braes of Balquhidder. [He has] two sons [who are] minors.”

2. Walter Stewart, bap. 30 APR 1815 in Clachglass of Glenbuckie.
3. ______ Stewart, bap 9 MAY 1819 in Ledcrich (This unnamed child matches with the family records of Duncan’s daughter, Catherine Stewart, 1818-1910, who married John Buchanan.)
4. John Stewart, bap. 20 NOV 1821 in Tulloch.
The birth of their third child at Ledcreich in 1815 and their fourth child at Tulloch (next door to Ledcreich) in 1821 correspond with the reference in Stewarts of the South to Duncan being a shepherd at Ledcreich at the time of writing.
Between 1821-1825, Duncan and his family moved to Crachavie, just one kilometre south of Duncraggan across the Black Water at the west end of Loch Vennachar, where they continued their family.

, d. 4 Jan 1879, Loch Ard, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland
(Age 51 years). Gregor McGregor Stewart was a younger son of Duncan Stewart in Crachavie, shown above.
In 1841, Gregor is found residing at Drumbowie, Chrachavie, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland with his birth family.
In 1851, Gregor was residing at Struan, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, and was employed as a shepherd to John Stewart (b 1780 in Callander and residing with his brother, Donald Stewart, b 1782 in Callander). Gregor is shown as born 1829 in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland. It is not known if he was related to his employer.
In 1861, Gregor was residing at Braeleny, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, employed as a shepherd to Robert McGowan.
Gregor’s marriage record shows him as the son of Duncan Stewart, an agricultural labourer who was still alive at the time of the wedding, and Agnes McGregor. Gregor’s wife, Janet Watt, is shown as the daughter of James Watt (farmer, deceased) and Mary McGregor. Gregor and Janet were residing at Auchinnear (Auchinner in Upper Glen Artney), Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland at the time of their marriage. Their first child was born three months after their wedding.
In 1871, Gregor was residing in Auchinar Cottage, Glen Artney, Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland with his wife and young children and an unspecified relative, James Watt, age 5, born 1866 in Stirling. Gregor was employed as a shepherd. Gregor was the manager of Auchinar (Auchinner) and returned to Aberfoyle in 1872 where he drowned in 1879. In 1881 Gregor’s widow, Janet, was residing at Glendhu, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland, with her five youngest children.
“ABERFOYLE — Sad case of drowning in Loch Ard — On Saturday morning, between five and six o’clock, Gregor Stewart, shepherd at Corriegrennan, near Aberfoyle, lost his life in Loch Ard under very painful circumstances. In obedience to instructions sent the previous evening, he was on his way to the house of his employer. To shorten the road, as has been his custom for the last fortnight during the storm, he took a near cut by going across Loch Ard on the ice. Unfortunately, poor Gregor fell into the only unsafe place of the Loch. His cries were heard by the nearest residents, and speedy assistance was rendered. By the time ropes were got he had only been under water for a minute or two, but all efforts at resuscitation proved unavailing. The deceased was for thirteen years manager of the farm of Auchinar, and left in 1872 when Lord Aveland (?) took possession. His untimely end will be mourned by a large circle of acquaintances in Strathearn. He leaves a widow and six young children, for whom much sympathy is felt. It is worthy of note that his collie, a faithful companion in all his wanderings, sat on the ice till the dead body was taken out, and when he saw that his master was lifeless, ran home.” (Perthshire Advertiser 9 JAN 1879)
On 4 Jan 1879, at age 52, Grigor Stewart, shepherd, husband of Janet Watt, died in Loch Ard, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland from drowning. He was the son of Duncan Stewart, shepherd, and Agnes Stewart nee MacGregor, Informant was Alexander McTavish, finder of the body and nearest neighbour.

5 Line – John Stewart in Wester Bridge of Turk and Donald Stewart in Aldannabreach
5-Line descends by uncertain means from James, son of Alexander, son of Duncan “Oig” Stewart, son of Duncan Stewart, 5th of Glenbuckie, as shown above. The intervening generations are unknown. 5-Line comprises two brothers in Bridge of Turk and Aldannabreach. The strong similarities between this line and 3-Line, above, suggest the possibility the author has made an error with one or the other of these lines. This family has not been identified in parish records or other records.
